Increase Energy Without Caffeine

We all need a pick-me-up from time to time.  I used to grab a cup of coffee but found that just upset my stomach and really did nothing for giving me energy.  The energy drinks are loaded with caffeine and SUGAR or HFCS so they are out!

For a pick-me-up that will last two or three hours food is the best fuel.  I eat a snack with about 200-250 calories. Not just any snack.  Go with a power snack of complex carbs for the added energy and protein for better brain function.

Complex carbs are healthy, not evil like the simple carbs.

Read the labels. If the label lists sugar, sucrose, fructose, corn syrup, white or “wheat” flour, they contain simple carbohydrates. If these ingredients are at the top of the list, they may contain mostly simple carbohydrates, and little else. They should be avoided.

Candies, table sugar, alcoholic beverages and sweetened soft drinks are simple sugar sources that provide calories, but no nutrients.

Complex carbohydrates are high-fiber foods, which improve your digestion. They help stabilize the blood sugar, keep your energy at an even level, and help you feel satisfied longer after your meal.

Simple carbohydrates, like sugar and corn syrup, are created in a factory – while complex carbohydrates in vegetables and whole grains are designed by nature, and help you maintain your health.


So I got in the habit of packing a small snack bag of seeds, nuts, berries, tubers and grains. I found a great tasting raw mix that uses hemp as a main ingredient. This works for me because I'm a flexitarian, rarely eat meat, and I need protein.
