Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc. Announces Limited Voluntary Cantaloupe Recall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 21, 2010 - Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc ("Del Monte Fresh") announced today the voluntary recall of certain cantaloupes grown in and shipped from Arizona. The affected product was distributed to limited customers in and around Detroit, Michigan and is being recalled because these cantaloupes have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Persons infected with Salmonella may experience a variety of symptoms and illnesses. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in more severe illnesses and potentially can be fatal if untreated.

Approximately eighty one (81) cartons of cantaloupes, each containing fifteen (15) cantaloupes per carton, were distributed to wholesalers in Detroit who in turn sell to other wholesalers and or to retail and foodservice outlets beginning on October 11, 2010. The cantaloupes have a light brown color skin on the exterior; with orange flesh. Each cantaloupe has a Del Monte® sticker with the words "Cantaloupe USA". The cantaloupes were distributed for sale in bulk in cardboard cartons. 

The recalled cartons of cantaloupes are dark brown cardboard with the "Del Monte" logo in red lettering and "cantaloupes" in yellow lettering on a green background. The cantaloupes have the lot codes W-11-147-43-size 15 or W-11-14-19 size 15.

The cantaloupe recall is being implemented as a result of a random test directed by the USDA and carried out by the Michigan Department of Agriculture. Although no illnesses have been reported, Del Monte Fresh voluntarily decided to recall the potentially affected lot.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 18, 2010- Fort Washington, PA – McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., is recalling one product lot of TYLENOL® 8 Hour caplets 50 count bottles to the retail level. McNeil is taking this action following a small number of complaints of a musty or moldy odor. The uncharacteristic odor is thought to be caused by the presence of trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole. This voluntary action is being taken as a precaution and the risk of adverse medical events is remote. To date, observed events reported to McNeil for this lot were temporary and non-serious.

The product lot number for the recalled product can be found on the side of the bottle label.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 15, 2010 - New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today alerted consumers that Pats Exotic Beverages Inc., located at 2919 Tiemann Avenue, Bronx, New York, is recalling all packages of "Carrot Juice" beverage, "Carrot Beet" beverage, "Carrot Lime" beverage and "Cucumber" beverage, because the products have been determined to be inadequately processed and may contain food borne pathogens.

Food borne pathogens can cause a variety of symptoms including vomiting, abdominal cramps, nausea and diarrhea, fever, headaches, muscle pain or weakness, or death.

The recalled "Carrot Juice" beverage, "Carrot Beet" beverage, "Carrot Lime" beverage and "Cucumber" beverage were sold from retail outlets in the NYC metro area. All packages and codes of these products are subject to the recall.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The potential for contamination was discovered after an inspection conducted by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors found the products were manufactured without the required processes in place to control food borne pathogens. Sales of the products have been suspended.
Consumers who have purchased containers of "Carrot Juice" beverage, "Carrot Beet" beverage, "Carrot Lime" beverage and "Cucumber" beverage, are urged to discard the product or return the product to the place of purchase.

Why Do We Need To Drink So Much Water?

I just did a Google search for the question "Why is being hydrated important" there are about 2,350,000 results. So this tells me a lot of people don't drink enough water and probably need to!

Your body needs water to stay alive. You can go only 3 days without water..

Water makes up 80% of your body - imagine your body drying up when you don't give it water...

Water carries toxins from our body. Drink water before going to bed because your body is detoxing while you sleep.

Your muscles are about 50-70 percent water so drink water when working out.

Drink water when sick to normalize body temperature
Water is important when trying to lose weight for healthy metabolism
Water works to normailze breathing, and pH balance.
Water helps to prevent constipation, kidney stones, heartburn, migraine headaches, gastritis and ulcers.
Water is key for healthy circulation
Water can help to prevent arthritis and osteoporosis.
Water also keeps kidney functions healthy and keeps us looking great; skin tone etc.

I was looking for information on how being hydrating affects sleep.  I'm working with my good friend and nutritionist Dr. Heidi Dulay on fixing my insomnia.  I will not use drugs to sleep so Dr. Heidi was my go to person.  I'm wearing these little patches that stimulate my body the way acupuncture does but without the needles.

These patches were not an instant sleep fix for me.  I expected to get the patches, put one on and sleep like a baby!  I was a little bummed when I didn't sleep any better for 6 nights.  See, the patches are non-drug so they don't work like popping a pill.  For me it took a few nights to find the right place to wear the patch.

Sorry, I digress... Let me get back to Why I searched for staying hydrated...

I always tried to not drink anything before going to bed so I didn't need to get up for a bathroom run.  Well I learned that we need water before going to bed because our body will detox while we sleep so we need to remove the waste.

When I started sleeping using the patches I found that I would wake up to go to the bathroom and fall right back to sleep if I drank a small cup of water. This was because the patches work better when I'm well hydrated. I proved it to my stubborn self when I tried to ignore the dry mouth and mild muscle aches when I woke at 3am. I finally got up to get a drink. I remembered going back to bed - the next thing I knew the alarm was going off 3 hours later! Water rocks!

So if you are having sleep troubles - try drinking more water and see if that helps.  I still use the sleep patches a few nights a week but  I Always make sure I'm well hydrated, especially at night.

How much water do you really need? Do we really need 8 - 8 oz glasses a day? It depends.

I learned how to figure out how much water my body needs, not a general number for everyone.

Take your weight - divide by 2 and this is the ounces of water your body needs. So if you weigh 170 divide by 2 = 85 ounces of water per day. From my earlier article...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 7, 2010 - Out of an abundance of caution, Living Foods, Inc. of Ionia, Michigan is recalling bulk and retail-size packages of Alfalfa Sprouts, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The alfalfa sprouts were distributed to retail and food service facilities through wholesale produce suppliers in Michigan.

The products subject to this market withdrawal include:

• Four (4) 1-pound bags of alfalfa sprouts, packaged in unlabeled 1-pound plastic bags in a box labeled as Living Foods, Inc. ALFALFA SPROUTS, with a SELL BY DATE of 10/2/2010.
• Five (5) Pound Bulk Container (bag in a box) of alfalfa sprouts labeled as, Living Foods, Inc. ALFALFA SPROUTS, with a SELL BY DATE of 10/2/2010.
• 4-ounce cup alfalfa sprouts labeled as Living Foods, Inc. ALFALFA SPROUTS, with a SELL BY DATE of 10/2/2010. UPC Code: 0 26684 10006 5.
• 4-ounce bag alfalfa sprouts labeled as Living Foods, Inc. ALFALFA SPROUTS, with a SELL BY DATE of 10/2/2010. UPC Code 0 26684 10004 1.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

A single package of Living Foods, Inc. ALFALFA SPROUTS tested positive for Salmonella spp. The company is working closely with the FDA and the State of Michigan to determine the cause of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased these products should discard them.

Wholesalers and retailers in possession of this product should remove the product from sale and cease distribution.

Alternative Treatment for Gout

Far from the new disease on the block, gout has been plaguing people throughout history. Indeed, diagnosed for over 2,000 years, Gout is considered one of our longest-known diseases.

Gout is a form of arthritis that often sneaks up in the middle of the night (we'll explain why it usually occurs at night later - it's the key to curing gout), suddenly attacking your joints with a deep, persistent pain.

 

Gout most often results when needle-like crystals of uric acid form in the body’s connective tissue or lodge themselves in the space between two bones (i.e., in the joints).

Additionally, the affects of gout can be found in other joints such as the elbows, fingers, heels, instep, and wrists.
