Superfood: Stabilized Rice Bran = Big B

Big B is an extraordinary superfood in powder form, with a wonderful sweet taste.  Most people use it to make smoothies.  The three company owners also eat it by the spoonful as a treat or a quick snack.  They’ve used it almost everyday for seven years. Order here

The only ingredient in Big B is stabilized rice bran, one of the richest sources of B complex vitamins (see Supplement Facts).  B vitamins are  a natural source of energy.  They help reduce stress and support your adrenals. They help sex drive and fertility.

Big B rice bran also naturally contains essential amino acids, essential fatty acids omega 6 and 3; the minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium; the super enzymes glutathione peroxidase, methionine reductase, and super oxide dismutase; phytosterols including gamma oryzanol, plus over 100 antioxidants.

Common rice bran turns rancid very quickly.  Stabilizing it allows the bran to stay fresh about a year or more after manufacturing and 60 days after opening.  Big B rice bran is stabilized without chemicals or preservatives.

Why Eat Healthy ? More Than 25% Of Nutrients We Absorb Nourish Our Eyes

Having healthy eyes is very important to me since my mother was blind by age 60 because of glaucoma. Glaucoma runs in my family, five immediate relatives have it. There's no cure for it, just treatment, so if diet can help prevent this eye disease and keep eyes healthy I'm all for it.

When mom and dad told you to eat your carrots because they were good for your eyes, they were on the right track. As researchers continue to document that we really are what we eat, the role of nutrition in eye health becomes clearer and more important all the time.

More than 25 per cent of the nutrients we absorb nourish our "visual system" - our eyes and all of the nerves, blood vessels and tissues that support our vision. Indeed the concentration of Vitamin C in healthy eyes is higher than almost anywhere else in the body. It is not surprising then that proper nutrition plays an important role in preventing and treating problems such as glaucoma, computer eye strain, dry eyes, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

The best diet for healthy eyes should be a variety of whole foods with emphasis on fruits and vegetables. The body does not use each vitamin and mineral in isolation. The absence of one nutrient can affect the body's ability to use another; for example, proper amounts of magnesium and vitamin D are needed to absorb and utilize calcium efficiently. Without adequate levels of zinc, the body cannot utilize all of the vitamin A it receives. Similarly, the B vitamins are needed together, working best as a team.

Eating a variety of whole foods and omitting processed sugar and other junk foods will help your body to get a wide range of nutrients. The body can lose a significant amount of nutrients when we eat nutrient poor foods. For example, we lose chromium and B vitamins as our body tries to burn white sugar. Therefore getting our nutrients if possible through healthy foods that we eat is a key to keeping good vision. By Marc Grossman, O.D., L.Ac.

If you need help with your diet and decide to add a supplement you might want to get this free report Are Your Vitamins Safe? before you waste your money or take something that is quite possibly going to cause harm.

The ingredients in some whole food multivitamins will help your body absorb even more nutrients from the food you eat.

I'm working on keeping my vision, It was so sad watching my mother lose her independence. She missed reading and driving more than anything.

Sugary Sports Drinks Mistakenly Associated With Being Healthy, Say Researchers

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2010) — Children who practice healthy lifestyle habits such as eating fruits and vegetables and engaging in physical activity may be negatively impacting their health because they tend to consume large amounts of flavored and sports beverages containing sugar, according to research at The Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

"Children and parents associate these drinks with a healthy lifestyle despite their increased amount of sugar and lack of nutritional value," said Nalini Ranjit, Ph.D., principal investigator and assistant professor of behavioral sciences at the UTHealth School of Public Health. The study will be published in the October issue of Pediatrics.
Researchers examined the association between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, unhealthy and healthy foods and physical activity levels of 8th and 11th grade Texas students to determine the relationship between beverage consumption and other behaviors. Sugar-sweetened beverages are drinks that contain added caloric sweeteners such as sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, including a large variety of carbonated and noncarbonated drinks but excluding 100 percent fruit juice.

Flavored or sports beverage drink consumption increased with levels of healthy food consumption and physical activity when compared to high soda consumption, which was associated with lower levels of these healthy behaviors.

"Sports drinks have been successfully marketed as beverages consistent with a healthy lifestyle, which has set them apart from sodas," said Ranjit, "However they have minimal fruit juice and contain unnecessary calories." Study results suggest there is a popular misperception of flavored and sports beverages being consistent with a healthy lifestyle, despite their sugary content.

Researchers in the study found that 28 percent of Texas children are consuming sugar-sweetened beverages three or more times a day. Among boys, the average daily consumption of soda increased from 8th to 11th grade while consumption of non-carbonated flavored and sports beverages remained steady. Soda consumption in girls remained steady from 8th to 11th grade and consumption of non-carbonated flavored and sports beverages declined substantially. Of the ethnicities of the children involved in the study, researchers found black children had lower soda consumption but considerably higher flavored and sports beverage consumption compared to Hispanic or white children.

Nearly 17 percent of children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 in the United States are in the 95 percentile of the BMI-for-age growth charts, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There is widespread consensus that the increasing consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with high levels of obesity nationwide, according to the study.

"High levels of consumption of these beverages has the potential to increase weight gain," said Ranjit, "Drinking just one can of soda or other sugary beverage a day could lead to more than a 10-pound weight gain in a year." Nutritionists at UTHealth also caution that children should have no more than one glass of fruit juice, even 100 percent fruit juice, a day, because of the high calories. Sports drinks should be reserved only for extreme exercise. Otherwise, children should drink water to replenish lost fluids, they say, and whole fruit is a better nutritional choice than fruit juice.

Ranjit recommends adolescents and their parents educate themselves on the sugar content of flavored and sports beverages. "Consuming large amounts of flavored and sports beverages could undo the effects of all that exercise," said Ranjit. "Recognizing these misperceptions is important to obesity prevention efforts."

Shoulder Pain Relief - Drug Free

Shoulder Pain
I'm an active person so when I started having shoulder pain I ignored it. I thought I was sleeping wrong. It took me 18 months to finally realize I had a frozen shoulder and it was not going to be fixed on it's own.

I couldn't raise my left arm to shampoo my hair, or even to shave under my arms (Gross!) I couldn't bend my arm behind me to scratch my back I had to put my winter jacket on with my left arm first because my arm would not move far enough behind me. I had less than 40% range of motion and no muscle left because I stopped using my left arm for anything.

I went to the doctor and started a weekly round of physical therapy.

I increased my cod liver oil and flax seeds to help keep the inflammation down. Supplements helped more than my physical therapist could believe. She couldn't say much about it because they are not taught about nutrition in school. She was still impressed.

I started working on my shoulder in January 2010. I got almost 93% range of motion back - until 6 weeks ago. I felt the familiar tightness when I reached up for a dish. I started doing the stretching exercises again but the pain came back. The orthopedic surgeon said this could happen. I was trying so hard to fix it myself since I knew the routine.

I recently learned that Kim Klaver had the exact same problem with her shoulder.  I know that Kim is very active with playing tennis so I knew she would be looking for a fix.  I also knew that she would find shoulder pain relief - that was DRUG - FREE.  She did and I was right there to hear about it.

Suzanne Somers, anti-drug crusader is also using this product (patch) to fix her aches and pains. In her book Breakthroughsuzanne somers book Suzanne says, "I have been using these non-drug patches for pain, sleep, energy, appetite control, and detoxification for the past two years and I can't say enough about them. After you read this interview {with David Schmidt} you are going to want to run to his website to get some for yourself. Sometimes things are too good to be true; these patches are simply good and true."

OK here's what Kim says about the pain patch and what it did for her frozen shoulder:

Who uses these patches, anyway?
People who want a non-drug alternative to help relieve their aches and pains. Nothing goes into your body at all.

How can anything work if you don’t put it into your body?

Here’s how it works.

It’s an efficient alternative to acupuncture: only no needles. For the last 2500 years, acupuncture doctors put needles in certain places on someone’s body to relieve pain. These patches simulate that. Except instead of needles, you put on these little patches. Like small round band-aids. They go right where the needles would go. Then they gently stimulate the same energy points. (Somers’ interview with the inventor.)

Kim says, "OK I was curious, so I decided to test them. I have always loved acupressure massage, so I thought I’d be a perfect subject. Anyway, three months ago, I tried one of the little patches on my left arm. That arm has had, for the past two years, only 60% range of motion, due to a car injury. I had no expectations."

"Within a month of putting this little patch on in a certain place each day, the range of motion was back at 97%.

No drugs, and nothing went into my body. (!)

Could be a fluke, of course.

But it worked for me. And it’s working for Ms. Somers.

And thousands of folks across some 80 countries now."
So I'm using these pain patches and my shoulder is already loosening up and I have no pain at all. I can reach above my head and can scratch my back for the first time in almost two years! I never knew how great it feels to scratch your own back when it itches...  I have better movement than I got from weekly trips to physical therapy.

Anyway, Do you know anyone who might want to know about these pain patches?

Looking For Help WIth Menopause Insomnia?

I've battled with sleep problems for the last five years.  I didn't know for a while that it was because of the drop in hormones in my body.  I kept thinking I was just too wired all the time to fall asleep.  Actually, I could fall asleep in minutes just to wake up at 3am and not be able to go back to sleep.  Do you know a lady that's having this kind of sleep problem?  Most women will go through sleeplessness when the hormones decline and this can happen in your mid 30's!
Sleeping So Much Better!
There is help without taking sleeping pills or over the counter sleep aids.  I've been using this little sleep patch for the last week.  It works like acupuncture but without needles.  I know that sounds a little wack but if you know much about Traditional Chinese Medicine you know that acupuncture works.

Here's my site for these patches, www.patchedforhealth.com but before going to the LifeWave site you can learn more from this menopause insomnia site.
I love these patches because for the first time in 5 years I sleep eight hours a night. It could be a fluke - even if it is, I'm still happy.

Drop me an email if you want more information on how I use the patches and how they work.

[UPDATED 09/24/2010] The voluntary recall affects milk- and soy-based formulas distributed in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, and some Caribbean nations. At least 12 of the recalled products were provided to families through the federal government’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) health and nutrition program. FDA is reassuring caregivers and families whose babies may have consumed recalled products that drinking the formula will not cause long-term health problems. FDA has created a searchable database to find lot numbers of affected products. The Consumer Update offers a printer-friendly PDF which can be shared with consumers and patients.

[Posted 09/23/2010]

AUDIENCE: Consumer, Pediatrics

ISSUE: Possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product. The FDA has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract.

BACKGROUND: The recall of these powder infant formulas includes certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers, and certain Similac powder product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans. See the Product Photo page. The recall includes powder infant formulas sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean. No Abbott liquid infant formulas are impacted.

RECOMMENDATION: If symptoms are noted and persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted. Products with affected lot numbers should be returned to Abbott at no cost to the consumer. Abbott Voluntarily Recalls Certain Similac® Brand Powder Infant Formulas That Did Not Meet Its Quality Standards

Similac Infant Formula Recall

Since I posted the Similac formula recall  yesterday (10-22-2010) it seems the site to check your lot # on the formula is overloaded and phones are busy as well.  Please try this link http://abbott.vo.llnwd.net/o18/similac/recall/default.htm   I've tried the link several times and there are still so many concerned people looking for info right now. Keep trying and keep checking back here for updates. We are not affiliated with Similac or Abbott, we will supply info as we get it.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Sept. 22, 2010 - ABBOTT PARK, Ill. - Abbott is initiating a proactive, voluntary recall of certain Similac-brand, powder infant formulas in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean.

Abbott is recalling these products following an internal quality review, which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.

The recall of these powder infant formulas includes:
  • Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.
  • Certain Similac powder product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.
To immediately find out if the product in your possession is included in this recall, parents and caregivers should visit www.similac.com/recall9, and type in their lot number to determine if their product is affected, or call (800) 986-8850.

No Abbott liquid infant formulas are impacted. Products not involved in the recall include all Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, such as Similac Expert Care™ Alimentum®, Elecare®, Similac Expert Care™ Neosure®, Similac® Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.

About the Recall
  • The company is implementing a plan to address this matter in the affected manufacturing facility, which is expected to be completed shortly. No other facilities or products are involved in this recall.
  • Abbott has consulted with the U.S. FDA regarding this recall.
Information for Parents and Caregivers
  • Products with affected lot numbers should be returned to Abbott at no cost to the consumer.
  • Parents and caregivers can go to www.similac.com/recall10 or call Abbott's consumer hotline, (800) 986-8850, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Both the website and the consumer hotline have specific details on how to complete the return process.
Holger Liepmann, executive vice president, Abbott Nutrition said:
"Abbott understands that parents expect to feed their children only the highest quality product. We are taking this action so that parents know that the infant formula products they provide unquestionably meet the highest quality standards for which they are known. We regret any inconvenience this situation poses to parents and consumers."

“Biggest Loser” Star Bob Harper Raises Awareness and Funds For Farm Animals

NEW_FS-LogoBW

“Biggest Loser” Star Bob Harper Makes Record-Breaking Gains for Farm Animals

In an Exclusive Interview with Farm Sanctuary, 2010 Walk for Farm Animals Spokesperson Bob Harper Proclaims “…we can no longer have blinders on...”

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.September 21, 2010 – On “The Biggest Loser,” celebrity trainer Bob Harper helps people lose weight and break the bad habits that are holding them back. But as the first-ever celebrity spokesperson for the Walk for Farm Animals, a national event to celebrate and promote compassion for farm animals and raise money to support the lifesaving rescue, education and advocacy work of Farm Sanctuary, he has become the biggest gainer for farm animals. Thanks in part to his star-power, the annual event has gained a record-breaking 78 participating cities across the U.S. and Canada (up 10 from last year) and a steadily growing list of registrants (nearly double last year’s participants), making the 2010 Walk for Farm Animals the largest organized North American event for farm animals in history.

With eight Walks already down in Michigan, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Missouri, Delaware, New Jersey, Tennessee and Florida, and 70 more still to go throughout the remainder of September and October (including a virtual “No Walk” Walk), the 2010 Walk is proof that the cruel treatment of animals raised for food has become an issue of national concern. This year’s addition of Harper as celebrity spokesperson, a first in the event’s nearly 25 year history, further demonstrates the mainstreaming of a movement that began in large part with the factory farm investigations and legal reforms initiated by Farm Sanctuary’s President and Co-Founder Gene Baur.

“The astounding growth of the Walk for Farm Animals is an encouraging sign that we are getting closer to the day when agribusiness’ treatment of living, breathing animals like unfeeling machinery is a thing of the past,” said Baur. “Through the vast resources of the Internet, undercover investigations, public education campaigns and popular films like ‘Food Inc.,’ people are learning in record numbers about the intolerable abuse, neglect and confinement endured by billions of animals raised for food on factory farms throughout North America, and they are increasingly rejecting these abhorrent practices in favor of mercy and compassion. No one likes cruelty to animals and the Walk provides a terrific opportunity to spread a message of hope for farm animals in your own hometown.”

Farm Sanctuary recently sat down with Harper on the set of “The Biggest Loser” in Los Angeles, where he credited the Walk with “getting people to think” and for initiating a “conversation that sparks change.”

Here are highlights from Farm Sanctuary’s exclusive interview with Bob Harper:

On getting involved with Farm Sanctuary and the Walk for Farm Animals:
“Well, I’ve got to tell you, when I was first approached about Farm Sanctuary, I was very, very excited. I knew that this was going to be a movement that I wanted to be a part of. It just all made sense to me. The lifestyle I live right now, my history, where I’ve grown up – so me being able to be a part of Farm Sanctuary is like having a badge of honor. I wanted to be able to talk about what I know and be a part of an organization that I believe so wholeheartedly in.”

On going vegan:
“It was actually pretty seamless. I was on vacation a couple of years ago and a friend of mine gave me a book called Skinny Bitch, and that started the ball rolling. But it wasn’t until I read T. Colin Campbell’s The China Study that my life absolutely changed. And bringing in the connection of ‘you are what you eat,’ that old adage our mothers have always taught us, it just started to make even more sense.”

On how his life has changed since going vegan:
“Well, it’s interesting because one thing I’ve really been able to do is talk to so many people about what they eat and their diet, for lack of a better word. I’ve worked with overweight Americans for such a long time and it’s about a stepping process … every day is a step because I get people I’ve worked with before saying to me now “What? Are you just going to take out all my meat and dairy?” I want to say “yes” immediately, but I know it’s about getting them to take steps. It’s a process for all of us, but I just get very excited about the platform I’ve been given and the information I now have to give out.”

On myths about vegan nutrition:
“I’ve really had to do my homework because my work is all about informing people and giving them the right information. One thing that I’ve realized is that, yes, our bodies need protein, but we don’t need as much as all these websites out there tell us that we do. And there are definitely ways to get all your nutrients within a plant-based diet.”

On how growing up on a cattle farm in Tennessee shaped the way he views farm animals:
“I have to tell you that because I grew up on this cattle farm it was just the way of life then. On the farm I grew up on the cows were treated relatively respectfully. They had pastures, they lived a good quality of life, of course until their death. To me there was more compassion back then because now … the thing that really pains me … is that these factory farms are just treating these animals like they’re light fixtures, like they’re not real and don’t have blood running through them. It’s just shocking to me.”

On the egregious abuses of modern farming:
“Well, I think the biggest thing is that animals are treated like they are not real. But these animals have emotions; they can be afraid; they can be happy. It’s like people tend to forget about that and that scares me when I think about slaughterhouses and what goes on in these places. When I started getting more and more informed about farm animals and how they were treated it made me feel like I needed to do whatever I could to help.”

On how people can make a difference for farm animals in their daily lives:
“They need to get involved, get informed and get their voices heard. To me, that is the number one step. One thing I tell people all the time when it comes to going to the grocery store, it’s like you are making a vote. Everything you get is a vote … it’s all about the foods you are eating. And I think you got to know what is going on out there … because we can no longer have blinders on; we can no longer just think ‘okay, well it doesn’t affect me,’ because these issues affect us all.”

Bob Harper’s PSA for the Walk for Farm Animals can be viewed here:

In July, when Harper was first named national Walk spokesperson, he spoke about the added health benefits of farm animal advocacy. “Getting and staying physically fit is a lot easier when you have a powerful motivation, and I can’t think of a better reason to get moving this fall than to raise vital funds and awareness for farm animals,” said Harper, who states that since he adopted a plant-based diet he has felt “more clear headed and strong” and that his genetically high cholesterol dropped more than 100 points. “When I think about the billions of sensitive, intelligent beings who are confined and mistreated on factory farms to produce foods linked with obesity, heart disease, cancer, and stroke — that is all the motivation I need to make healthier, more conscientious choices. Lead In Our Kid's Apple Juice....

Apple Juice
A new study from California finds high levels of lead in common foods and drinks our children consume.  125 out of 146 products tested at the EPA - Environmental Protection Agency, were found to have high lead levels.

"Lead exposure among children is a particular concern because their developing bodies absorb lead at a higher rate and because children are particularly sensitive to lead's toxic effects, including decreased IQ," says toxicologist Barbara G. Callahan, PhD, of the University of Massachusetts.

Lead was found in apple juice, grape juice, packaged peaches and pears including the baby food peaches and pears.  Some items were labeled as organic.

Many products have enough lead in one serving to warrant warning labels under California law, says the San Francisco based Environmental Law Foundation, who did generate the study.

"Scientists agree that there is no safe level of exposure to lead," according to the foundation.  "Lead accumulates in the body from multiple exposures."

Enhanced Energy Patch

Energy in a Patch. Really?  Does it work? Is it safe?

I gave up coffee three-years ago and have never craved it or wanted even a sip.  I do miss the pick me up I got in the afternoon after having that cup of coffee.  I've never been one to down the energy drinks - why would I when they are loaded with sugar and caffeine??? I will not pop a pill for energy - so what is left?

I'm testing this little patch.

Now, I don't claim to understand the science behind this energy patch and frankly I don't care about the science.  I do care about putting safe products on and in my body and that is what I know this patch does.

The patch is from Lifewave® - I was a wee bit impressed with the patch(es) because they are used by USA Olympic Coaches and NFL Pro Football Players, but I was hugely pleased to know that everyday Moms and Dads use the energy patch to keep up with everyday life!

Read a little from the Lifewave® site:

NEW ENERGY TECHNOLOGY

We’re all accustomed to thinking that we have to put something into our body (like vitamins) to improve our health. While proper nutrition, water and exercise are a necessary part of any healthy lifestyle, our bodies also require a continuous flow of energy. For example, our brains and nerves transmit electrical signals to our muscles to cause them to use stored chemical energy to contract.

It’s been known for thousands of years that specific frequencies of light can cause specific changes within the human body. When we go out in the sun, a frequency of light causes our body to make Vitamin D. Another frequency of light (UV) will cause our body to make melanin, the chemical that gives us a sun tan.

Energy Enhancer patches use this knowledge to stimulate acupuncture points on the body for improving the flow of energy and producing drug-free energy enhancement within minutes of use.

Our exclusive Lifewave® non-transdermal patch system utilizes new technology to gently stimulate acupuncture points – literally improving the flow of energy in the body for improvement of energy - within minutes of use!
So if  you are the kind of person who wants a natural pick me up like I do, or you know some who who might want to know more go to the Lifewave site and look around.  Or wait till I've completed my own testing with the patch :)

If you have questions about the patch email me here Robin Plan  with "Energy Patch" in the subject. If you would like to sample the patches I will be offering a few soon.  Drop me an email message asking for samples and I will get back with you when I'm finished with my own testing.

Confused About Fat? Choose Grassfed!

In my Grandma's day, there was no such thing as a bad fat. All fat was "good" simply because it tasted good. My Grandma fried her eggs in bacon grease, added bacon grease to her cakes and pancakes, made her pie crusts from lard, and served butter with her homemade bread. My grandmother was able to thrive on all that saturated fat—but not my grandfather. He suffered from angina and died from heart failure at a relatively young age.

My grandfather wasn't alone. Population studies from the first half of the 20th century showed that Americans in general had a much higher risk of cardiovascular disease than people from other countries, especially Japan, Italy and Greece. Was all that saturated fat to blame? The Japanese were eating very little fat of any kind, while the people of the Mediterranean were swimming in olive oil, an oil that is very low in saturated fat but high in monounsaturated oils.

So, in the 1960s, word came from on high that we should cut back on the butter, cream, eggs and red meat. But, interestingly, the experts did not advise us to switch to an ultra-low fat diet like the Japanese, nor to use monounsaturated oils like the Greeks or Italians. Instead, we were advised to replace saturated fat with polyunsaturated oils—primarily corn oil and safflower. Never mind the fact that no people in the history of this planet had ever eaten large amounts of this type of oil. It was deemed "the right thing to do." Why? First of all, the United States had far more corn fields than olive groves, so it seemed reasonable to use the type of oil that we had in abundance. But just as important, according to the best medical data at the time, corn oil and safflower oil seemed to lower cholesterol levels better than monounsaturated oils.

Today, we know that's not true. In the 1960s, researchers did not differentiate between "good" HDL cholesterol and "bad" LDL cholesterol. Instead, they lumped both types together and focused on lowering the sum of the two. Polyunsaturated oils seemed to do this better than monounsaturated oils. We now know they achieve this feat by lowering both our bad and our good cholesterol, in effect throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Monounsaturated oils leave our HDL intact.

In hindsight, it's not surprising, then, that our death rate from cardiovascular disease remained high in the 1970s and 80s even though we were eating far less butter, eggs, bacon grease, and red meat: We had been told to replace saturated fat with the wrong kind of oil.

During this same era, our national health statistics were highlighting another problem, this one even more ominous: an increasing number of people were dying from cancer. Why were cancer deaths going up? Was it the fact that our environment was more polluted? That our food had more additives, herbicides and pesticides? That our lives were more stressful? That we were not eating enough fruits and vegetables? Yes. Yes. Yes. And yes.

But there was another reason we were losing the war against cancer: the supposedly "heart-healthy" corn oil and safflower oil that the doctors had advised us to pour on our salads and spread on our bread contained high amounts of a type of fat called "omega-6 fatty acids." There is now strong evidence that omega-6s can make cancer cells grow faster and more invasive. For example, if you were to inject a colony of rats with human cancer cells and then put some of the rats on a corn oil diet, some on a butterfat diet, and some on a beef fat diet, the ones given the omega-6 rich corn oil would be afflicted with larger and more aggressive tumors.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to us, we were getting a second helping of omega-6s from our animal products. Starting in the 1950s, the meat industry had begun taking our animals off pasture and fattening them on grains high in omega-6s, adding to our intake of these potentially cancer-promoting fats.

In the early 1990s, we learned that our modern diet was harboring yet another unhealthy fat: trans-fatty acids. Trans-fatty acids are formed during the hydrogenation process that converts vegetable oil into margarine and shortening. Carefully designed studies were showing that these manmade fats are worse for our cardiovascular system than the animal fats they replaced. Like some saturated fats, they raise our bad cholesterol. But unlike the fats found in nature, they also lower our good cholesterol—delivering a double whammy to our coronary arteries. "Maybe butter is better after all," conceded the health experts.

Given all this conflicting advice about fat, consumers were ready to lob their tubs of margarine at their doctors. For decades they had been skimping on butter, even though margarine tasted little better than salty Vaseline. Now they were being told that margarine might increase their risk of a heart attack!

Some people revolted by trying to abandon fat altogether. For breakfast, they made do with dry toast and fat-free cottage cheese. For lunch, they ate salad greens sprinkled with pepper and vinegar. Dinner was a skinless chicken breast poached in broth. Or better yet, a soy burger topped with lettuce. Dessert? Well, after all that self-denial, what else but a big bowl of fat-free ice cream and a box of Snackwell cookies. Thank goodness calories no longer counted! Only fat made you fat!

Or, so the diet gurus had told us. Paradoxically, while we were doing our best to ferret out all the fat grams, we were getting fatter and fatter. We were also becoming more prone to diabetes. Replacing fat with sugar and refined carbohydrates was proving to be no more beneficial than replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated oils.

At long last, in the mid-1990s, the first truly good news about fat began to emerge from the medical labs. The first fats to be given the green light were the monounsaturated oils, the ones that had helped protect the health of the Mediterraneans for so many generations. These oils are great for the heart, the scientists discovered, and they do not promote cancer. They are also a deterrent against diabetes. The news came fifty years too late, but it was welcome nonetheless. Please pass the olive oil!

Stearic acid, the most abundant fat in beef and chocolate, was also found to be beneficial. Unlike some other saturated fats, stearic acid does not raise your bad cholesterol and it may even give your good cholesterol a little boost. Hooray!

Then, at the tail end of the 20th century, two more "good" fats were added to the roster—omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, the fat found in the meat and dairy products of ruminants. Both of these fats show signs of being potent weapons against cancer. However, the omega-3s may be the best of all the good fats because they are also linked with a lower risk of virtually all the so-called "diseases of civilization," including cardiovascular disease, depression, ADHD, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, obesity, asthma, and autoimmune diseases.

So, some of you may be wondering, what does this brief history of fat have to do with grassfarming? Few people realize that all omega-3s originate in the green leaves of plants and algae. Fish have large amounts of this good fat because they eat small fish that eat smaller fish that dine on omega-3 rich algae and phytoplankton. Grazing animals have more omega-3s because they get the omega-3s directly from the grass. In both cases, the omega-3s are ultimately passed on to humans, the top of the food chain.

Products from grassfed animals offer us more than omega-3s. They contain significant amounts of two "good" fats, monounsaturated oils and stearic acid, but no manmade trans-fatty acids. They are also the richest known natural source of CLA and contain extra amounts of vitamin E and beta-carotene. Finally, grassfed meat is lower than feedlot meat in total fat and calories, making it ideally suited for our sedentary lifestyles.
I don't believe it's a matter of luck or chance that grassfed products have so many of the good fats but so few of the bad. In fact, I'll wager that the more that is discovered about fat in the coming years, the more grassfed meat will shine. The reason for my confidence is simple: our bodies are superbly adapted to this type of food. In the distant past, grassfed meat was the only meat around. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors either brought home a grazing ruminant such as elk, deer, or bison, or a predator that preyed on those animals. Either way, the nutrients found in grass made their way into the animals' flesh, and ultimately, into our own.

Over the eons, our bodies began to "expect" the kinds and amounts of fat found in grassfed meat. Our hearts counted on the omega-3s to stabilize their rhythm and keep blood clots from forming. Our brain cells relied on omega-3 to build flexible, receptor-rich membranes. Our immune systems used the omega-3s and CLA to help fend off cancer. And because wild game is relatively lean, our bodies weren't burdened with unnecessary amounts of fat or calories.

When we switch from grainfed to grassfed meat, then, we are simply returning to our original diet, the diet that is most in harmony with our physiology. Every cell and system of our bodies function better when we eat products from animals raised on grass.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- September 2, 2010 - (Cambridge, Massachusetts) – The following press release was issued by Whole Foods Market's North Atlantic Region regarding the voluntary recall of Morningland Dairy of Mountain View, Missouri, Raw Goat Milk Mild Cheddar Cheese.

Whole Foods Market's North Atlantic region is announcing a voluntary recall Morningland Dairy and Ozark Hills Farm Raw Goat Milk Mild Cheddar Cheese due to possible contamination by Listeria and Staphylococcus aureus.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

These cheeses were sold in three Whole Foods Market stores: West Hartford Center and Glastonbury, Connecticut; and Hadley, Massachusetts. The cheese is packaged in plastic labeled with a Whole Foods scale label and sold as random weight size retail packages in the cheese department.

Customers who have purchased these products from Whole Foods Market may return them to the store for a full refund. Signage has also been posted in stores to notify customers.

This recall was issued as a result of contamination found during a routine regulatory sampling. The FDA, the Missouri Milk Board and Morningland Dairy are investigating the source of the contamination.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Staphylococcus aureus is a bacteria that usually causes rapid food poisoning symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, retching, abdominal cramping and prostration. In more severe cases, headache, muscle cramping and transient changes in blood pressure and pulse may occur.
