Treating High Blood Pressure Naturally

Most heart patients already know high blood pressure can mean disaster for their heart health. But here’s what they don’t know. Having high blood pressure can also wreak havoc on your brain, kidneys, and eyes.

High blood pressure can quietly damage these vital organs for years before you see any symptoms. If left unchecked, this silent killer can leave you with a disability. Or worse, it can lead to a heart attack or stroke. That’s because your heart, brain, eyes, and kidneys all depend
on blood flow. It supplies them with life-giving nutrients and oxygen. Healthy arteries are strong and flexible. They’re smooth on the inside. This lets blood flow freely. With high blood pressure, however, it’s a different story.

The increased pressure can damage the lining of your arteries’ walls. This can lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), heart disease, and stroke. The constant pressure can
also cause a section of the arterial wall to enlarge, causing an aneurysm in the aorta or brain.

Unfortunately, mainstream medicine’s solution to this is side-effect laden drugs like beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, calcium-channel blockers, and diuretics.

Next, you can use any one of these four natural alternatives to reduce or even prevent high blood pressure:

Garlic – This tasty herb contains sulfides that help relax your arteries. This lets blood flow more freely. In fact, a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that garlic can relax blood vessel tension by an amazing 72 percent.1 For maximum benefit, eat one to two cloves of fresh garlic per day. If you’d rather use a supplement, choose one that gives you at least 3,600 mcg of allicin – garlic’s active compound.

Hawthorn – This herb has been used for centuries as a heart tonic. Just like garlic, it works to relax the blood vessels. It does this by inhibiting enzymes called angiotensin-converting enzymes. (They are what cause your blood vessels to constrict.) Prescription drugs like ACE inhibitors work the same way – with far more dangerous side effects. In one clinical trial, hawthorn effectively reduced diastolic blood pressure.2 I recommend you take 1,000 mg of hawthorn extract daily.

CoQ10 – About 50 percent of patients that come to me on high blood pressure meds have stopped taking them just by supplementing with CoQ10. A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirms what I’ve seen in my own practice. Researchers gave CoQ10 to diabetic patients. Not only did their blood sugar improve, so did their blood pressure.3 This powerful and amazing antioxidant works by supplying your heart with the critical energy it needs to pump blood throughout your body. Without CoQ10, your heart would literally stop beating. I suggest you take 50 to 100 mg of the potent form of CoQ10 known as ubiquinol.

Quercetin – This powerful antioxidant is off most doctors’ radar screens. It’s a “bioflavanoid” that’s found in foods like apples, onions, red grapes, and leafy greens. In one study, researchers gave 22 people with high blood pressure quercetin for four weeks. At the end of the study, they showed significant improvement.4 The easiest way to get more quercetin is to eat more fruits and leafy green veggies. Otherwise, you can get a supplement at your local health-food store. I recommend 300 to 750 mg per day.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Irwindale, CA, February, 19, 2010 – Lovin Oven, LLC of Irwindale, CA announced that it has taken the precautionary measure of voluntarily recalling certain Health Valley Organic Peanut Crunch, Dutch Apple and Wildberry Chewy Granola Bars because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The bars contain organic toasted soy grits supplied by Thumb Oilseed Producers Cooperative of Ubly, MI. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled bars and no other types of Health Valley brand bars are being recalled.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recalled Peanut Crunch, Dutch Apple and Wildberry chewy granola bars are distributed nationally. The only lots affected are:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 10, 2010 - Monrovia CA – Trader Joe's Company of Monrovia, California is voluntarily recalling Trader Joe’s Chocolate Chip Chewy Coated Granola Bars, UPC 82818, Use by Dates/Lot Codes 16JUL10H2 and 17JUL10H1, manufactured by Bloomfield Bakery, a subsidiary of Ralcorp Holdings, Inc. because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The product involved in this recall was distributed at Trader Joe’s stores nationally and comes in a 7.4 oz box marked with Use by/Lot Codes 16JUL10H2 and 17JUL10H1 on the top of the box and stamped individually on the side of each granola bar. Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and Bloomfield Bakery continue their investigation.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

Nature’s Variety Issues Nationwide Voluntary Recall On Raw Frozen Chicken Diets With A "Best If Used By" Date Of 11/10/10

Nature’s Variety has initiated a voluntary recall of their Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet for dogs and cats with a "Best If Used By" date of 11/10/10 because these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The only products affected are limited to chicken medallions, patties, and chubs with a "Best If Used By" date of 11/10/10. No other Nature’s Variety products are affected.

The affected products are limited to the Nature’s Variety Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet packaged in the following forms:

  • 3 lb chicken medallions (UPC# 7 69949 60130 2) with a "Best If Used By" date of 11/10/10
  • 6 lb chicken patties (UPC# 7 69949 60120 3) with a "Best If Used By" date of 11/10/10
  • 2 lb chicken chubs (UPC# 7 69949 60121 0) with a "Best If Used By" date of 11/10/10

The “Best If Used By” date is located on the back of the package above the safe handling instructions. The affected product was distributed through retail stores and internet sales in the United States, and in limited distribution in Canada.

If you are a consumer and have purchased one of the affected products, please return the unopened product to your retailer for a full refund or replacement. If your package has been opened, please dispose of the raw food in a safe manner by securing it in a covered trash receptacle. Then, bring your receipt (or the empty package in a sealed bag) to your local retailer for a full refund or replacement.

Nature’s Variety became aware of a potential problem after receiving a consumer complaint. Subsequent testing indicated that the lot code related to the consumer complaint tested negative for Salmonella. However, additional subsequent testing found the "Best If Used By" date of 11/10/10 to be contaminated with Salmonella.

No pet or human illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this lot code.

Reed Howlett, Nature’s Variety CEO, stated, "Because pet health and safety are our top priority, Nature’s Variety takes every step necessary to ensure the quality and safety of our products. In addition to our industry best manufacturing practices, and in an abundance of caution, all Nature’s Variety raw frozen products now will undergo a ‘test and hold’ period before being released for sale."

Salmonella can affect both humans and animals. Even though no illnesses have been reported, consumers should follow the Safe Handling Guidelines published on the Nature’s Variety package when disposing of the affected product. People handling raw frozen pet foods may become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not followed the safe handling guidelines set forth by the company.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, or fever. Although rare, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, or urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with the affected product should contact their health care provider.

Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, or vomiting. Some pets may experience only a decreased appetite, fever, or abdominal pain. Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed any of the affected products and is experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

BROOKLYN, New York – February 9, 2010 – Slow Food USA (http://www.slowfoodusa.org) today announced that its 90,000 members and advocates are rallying the public to tell Congress to get serious about combating child obesity when legislators update the Child Nutrition Act. Last week, President Obama proposed adding $1 billion per year to the legislation, and today the First Lady launched a new child obesity initiative, which aims to solve the problem of childhood obesity in a generation. Both set the stage for Congress to begin debating the bill this month.


"President Obama’s proposal to add $1 billion per year to the Child Nutrition Act is an important step forward, and we need to push our legislators to make it happen," stated Josh Viertel, president, Slow Food USA. "That said, it is not enough to reverse the most troubling trend in our country: one third of America’s kids will eventually suffer from diabetes because of the food we feed them. And yet Congress currently spends more than $13 billion per year subsidizing the production of the very same foods that are making kids sick. We need to address the core causes of obesity, and invest in healthier food for our nation’s children."


Right now, Congress gives schools $2.68 for each lunch served, of which only about $1 goes towards ingredients. President Obama has proposed adding $1 billion per year to the Child Nutrition Act, but the money will need to be split up between many critical programs. At most, schools would receive an additional 20 cents per meal, which falls short of what they need to serve a healthful lunch with sufficient fruits, vegetables and whole grains . School nutrition directors and advocates agree that this would cost at least $1 more per lunch. Hence Slow Food USA is asking citizens to tell their legislators to add at least $1 billion to the Child Nutrition Act, as well as to strengthen nutrition standards and help schools start farm-to-school programs.


"The math speaks for itself," continued Viertel. "Obesity and diabetes cost our nation $263 billion per year, about half of which is paid for by taxpayers. And yet school lunch is so under-funded that most schools can only afford to serve the cheap processed foods that fuel obesity and diabetes. Investing in healthier food is the right thing to do for our kids and for our economy."

Mark Pereira, Ph.D., senior author on the study and associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, said people who consume soft drinks on a regular basis, defined as primarily carbonated sugar-sweetened beverages, tend to have a poor behavioral profile overall.

However, the effect of these drinks on pancreatic cancer may be unique.

"The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin in the body, which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth," said Pereira.

For the current study, Pereira and colleagues followed 60,524 men and women in the Singapore Chinese Health Study for 14 years. During that time, there were 140 pancreatic cancer cases. Those who consumed two or more soft drinks per week (averaging five per week) had an 87 percent increased risk compared with individuals who did not.

No association was seen between fruit juice consumption and pancreatic cancer.

Pereira said that these results from Singapore are likely applicable to the United States.

"Singapore is a wealthy country with excellent health care. Favorite pastimes are eating and shopping, so the findings should apply to other western countries," said Pereira.

Susan Mayne, Ph.D., associate director of the Yale Cancer Center and professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health, said these study results are intriguing but have some key limitations that should be considered in any interpretation.

"Although this study found a risk, the finding was based on a relatively small number of cases and it remains unclear whether it is a causal association or not. Soft drink consumption in Singapore was associated with several other adverse health behaviors such as smoking and red meat intake, which we can't accurately control for," said Mayne, an editorial board member of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

Pereira points out that the findings are biologically plausible, held up in non-smokers, remained similar after taking other dietary habits into account and are consistent with findings in Caucasian populations.

Over 90% of kitchens in America have microwave ovens.
