Puppy Dog Acne Cure

bulldog pupsI'm a healthy pet nut! My animals have always gotten the best care from me. I keep my eyes and ears open for all natural pet care options. It does make a difference - My old sweet sheltie, Tara lived to be 18 years-old. She was healthy and died of old age. I do know many dogs suffer skin problems and the conventional treatments aren't always gentle or effective.

I recently tried a natural cream for dogs with varied skin problems. I used it on my Shelties sore paws and sunburned noses. It helped both problems in two days. I decided to research if anyone was using it for common dog acne. Below is what I learned.

How to Get Rid of Dog Acne

As humans we experience skin problems like acne at least once in our lives, but what most don't realize is that we aren't the only ones who need attention when it comes to annoying acne. Believe it or not, our dogs also have the tendency to develop what is commonly known as canine acne, a skin problem caused by the blockage of hair follicles due to substances like keratin and sebum that are plugging debris within the pores.

This kind of skin disorder is common among certain breeds, particularly for 5 to 8 month-old English bulldogs, Boxers, Great Danes, Rottweilers and Doberman Pinschers.

So how can you tell if your dog has acne? Dogs that have this kind of skin problem develop multiply blackheads or comedones in areas like the muzzle, lips, and chin. If left untreated, canine acne can develop swellings, scabs, and more blackheads, which normally do not affect the dog unless these develop into a secondary skin infection that could cause irritation, itching, and of course pain. If you think your dog's lips or chin have blackheads and swellings that might develop into a chronic type of skin disease, the best solution is to take him or her to the local vet for treatment.

Unfortunately, most canine acne cases cannot be cured entirely but it can be controlled with proper treatment and medication.
The vet would normally base his or her findings on the dog's blackheads, but for further assurance he or she might perform a skin biopsy on the dog. This is also to ensure that the canine acne isn't caused by more severe problems such as mite infestations (demodecosis), ringworms, puppy strangles, and other allergies that could be causing the blackheads and swelling to develop.

Here are some options for canine acne treatment:

- The vet will usually recommend regular cleaning of the infected areas with anti-acne products such as benzoyl peroxide or mild anti-seborrhea shampoos in order to lessen and rid the dog of the bacteria that causes the plugging of debris within the skin and to remove such debris effectively.

- Antibiotics may be needed and prescribed if the canine acne becomes worse due to secondary skin infections that could cause incessant itching, scratching, and pain on the dog. The antibiotics are usually needed for 3 to 4 weeks, but there is a possibility that a swab test would be required for further observation. Make sure that the medications used are prescribed from a well-rounded veterinarian so as to prevent further pain and damage from happening to your pet.

- Of course, if things have gotten worse and you see your dog scratching endlessly on the infected parts (especially the face), it would be best to use an anti-inflammatory drug, which usually comes in the form of either a steroid cream or injection that will be able to lessen the discomfort your dog feels. Again, consult the veterinarian first before buying these drugs to ensure the safety of your dog's health.

I also recommend you check out products that naturally help to clear up canine acne by working with your dog's immune system. Some of these products will also help to relieve scratching and itching that may develop as a result of the acne.

Is Trick-or-Treating Dangerous?
Halloween strikes fear into parents' hearts for reasons that have nothing to do with scary costumes. Hospitals have been offering to X-ray candy for decades, and this year a forensic lab in DuPage County, outside Chicago, will inspect suspicious sweets using the technology usually reserved for homicide, sexual assault and burglary. Health officials are warning against letting kids scoop up candy with their germy hands, lest they spread H1N1 flu to the other revelers. In Bobtown, Penn., spooked officials have banned trick-or-treating altogether. But is trick-or-treating really dangerous? Read rest of Is Trick-or-Treating Dangerous?

Cruciferous Vegetables in Whole Food Multivitamins

eat your vegetables
We know we should eat more vegetables but how many of us really eat enough of them every single day? And how do we know what a serving really means? I found this really cool site to help on the serving size.

It's next to impossible to get our 11-year-old son to eat veggies, especially the ones like Brussels sprouts! Luckily two years ago he decided to take the supplement Purple and Green Pops, the whole food multivitamin I've taken for 4 years. Note I said "supplement" - I will never suggest taking vitamin pills and still eat a poor diet and make you think it's all good. Eating food for best health is, real whole foods.

OK now on to getting to know about veggies that you are least likely to eat....
btw, these are all in the Purple and Green Pops, a total of 77 ingredients in each capsule.

Cruciferous Vegetables

The term cruciferous refers to ‘cross like’ arrangement of the leaves noted in some vegetables. Vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and kale are some of the commonly consumed cruciferous vegetables. These cruciferous vegetables are known to contain numerous proteins and other chemical compounds, referred to as phytochemicals, that are beneficial in maintaining a good health and also preventing a number of disorders. One of the main phytochemicals noted in cruciferous vegetables is glucosinolate (glucoraphanin and isothiocyanate sulforaphane are two major types of this chemical) responsible for the majority of benefits noted with cruciferous vegetables.1

These phytochemicals are known to prevent numerous disorders of the heart and reduce the levels of bad cholesterol in our body. The anticancer activity of the cruciferous vegetables prevents the occurrence of a number of cancers including prostate, bladder, lung, stomach, colon and breast cancers.2,3 These vegetables are also known to have a significant amount of antioxidant capabilities that help prevent cell damage.

Broccoli

Broccoli belongs to the group of cruciferous vegetables that are known have numerous benefits. The benefits of broccoli are owed to the phytochemical known as glucosinolates. This phytochemical is responsible for its chemopreventive effects wherein broccoli consumption is associated with a decrease in the risk of heart disorders. Broccoli has been noted to produce certain proteins known as thioredoxin that have heart protective capability. The cardioprotective properties of broccoli improve heart function, prevent formation of clots, reduce the size of clots and suppress inflammatory reactions in the heart.1 Broccoli is known to prevent various cancers including prostate gland cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer and lung cancer.2-4 The prevention of prostate gland cancer was noted to be more pronounced with the use of broccoli.3

Brussels Sprouts

Brussels sprouts contain the highest amount of a protein known as sulforaphane which has anti-cancer effects. The main benefit of brussels sprouts is the reduction in the risk of various cancers including colon and prostate cancer. The sulforaphane in brussels sprouts prevents the progression of the cancer cells and even causes death of cancer cells.5 Similar to other cruciferous vegetables brussels sprouts also benefits individuals suffering from colorectal cancer, and breast cancer.1 Brussels sprouts were also noted to prevent the cancerous changes in the liver in one of the studies wherein brussels sprouts inhibited the cellular changes which result in the formation of cancer.6

Cabbage

It is a very good source of Vitamin C. it also contain significant quantity of glutamine which is an amino acid with anti-inflammatory properties. It is a source of indole-3-carbinol which has medicinal properties. The intake of cabbage has been found to be associated with decreased risk of bladder cancer. A significant association between the consumption of cabbage and decrease in the risk of bladder cancer was reported in a study.4 Further, the risk of lung cancer was noted to be inversely proportional to the consumption of cabbage wherein increased consumption of cabbage resulted in a decrease in the risk of lung cancers.7 Other cancers such as breast cancers, lung cancers and stomach are also preventable with regular usage of cabbage. The cancer preventive effect was observed in all the types of cabbages in general.8

Cauliflower

Cauliflower is also known to contain a high amount of cell protective proteins as in other cruciferous vegetables. Such cell protective proteins may have a direct or indirect role in the antioxidant mechanisms occurring in our body. This property in cauliflower enhances protection against the occurrence of cancer, high blood pressure, nerve damage and eye damage.9 The benefits of cruciferous vegetables in the prevention of different types of cancers are well established across various studies. Cauliflower may also benefit as a chemoprotective agent in treating cancers of the breast, prostate gland and the colon.8 Cooking processes may alter the availability of the phytochemicals present in cruciferous vegetable such as cauliflower wherein cauliflower supplements may overcome this problem.10 Cauliflower leaf juice has antimicrobial properties wherein it prevents the growth of many bacteria that are commonly found in different food substances. This property of cauliflower may be beneficial in preventing bacterial contamination of food substances.11

Kale

The benefit of kale was noted in a study performed in individuals suffering from high cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia). This condition commonly results in formation of blocks in the blood vessels supplying the heart. Administration of kale juice in these individuals decreased the risk of formation of clots. Other benefits of kale noted in this study included increase in the good cholesterol levels, decrease in bad cholesterol levels and increase in the antioxidant activities in the body.12 Kale along with other cruciferous vegetables is also known to contain high amounts vitamins and other functional compounds that are beneficial to the human body.13 Along with these benefits kale like the other cruciferous vegetables benefits individuals who are susceptible to different types of cancers.

Vitamin D Might Lessen Your Flu Risk

sunny day
News from Ireland that we can all learn from: Vitamin D Might Lessen Your Flu Risk

Seasonal influenza has been linked with a deficiency of solar radiation, which triggers production of vitamin D. Simply put, the sun does not shine enough in Ireland.

Now that the swine flu vaccine is finally in the country, at-risk groups are being urged to get inoculated. But while the Irish government has invested millions of euro in orders for the vaccine from pharmaceutical companies, it is interesting to note that one country is taking a different approach.

The Canadian government, and more specifically the provinces of Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nova Scotia, have suspended the 'normal' seasonal flu shots for anyone under 65 in response to a recent study there.

Full Article

In 1981 R Edgar Hope Simpson, who became famous in the late 1960s after he discovered the cause of shingles, proposed that a principal cause of seasonal influenza is linked with the deficiency of solar radiation which triggers the production of vitamin D in the skin.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in the winter as we receive it in large amounts from the sun and in smaller quantities from oily fish like mackerel, herring, sardines and foods like eggs and fortified milk.

Vitamin D is crucial in boosting the immune system and defending itself against invading organisms.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 22, 2009 - Englewood Cliffs, NJ - Unilever United States, Inc., of Englewood Cliffs, NJ, in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is voluntarily recalling a limited number of tubs of Breyers® ice cream because it was mispackaged and may contain undeclared wheat. The product inside of the tub is "All Natural Cookies & Cream." The ingredient statement on the tub does not declare wheat, which is an ingredient of the Cookies & Cream product.

The mispackaged ice cream product was distributed in Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Trinidad and Virginia through retail stores in these locations and adjoining areas. The affected product is being recalled from consumers and retailer store shelves, back rooms and warehouses.

Protect Against Toxic Chemicals - You Can Help

It's gotten to the point that every American alive today, including newborn babies, has hundreds of chemicals flowing through their blood.

Astoundingly, of the 82,000 chemicals available for use in the U.S., only about 200 have been required to be tested for safety.

Protect against toxic chemicals. »

The 33 year-old law that is supposed to protect Americans from exposure to toxic chemicals is so outdated that China legally exports toxic materials into the U.S. that are not only banned in Japan and Europe, but can't even be used domestically in China.

The burden placed on the Environmental Protection Agency under this law, the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), is so onerous that they have only succeeded in banning one group of chemicals, PCBs, from the marketplace.

It's time to reform and strengthen TSCA -- support legislation to protect against dangerous toxic chemicals. »

Thanks for taking action!

Grass Fed Beef Resources

I only buy beef that is 100% grass fed. I know the price seems a bit higher but with the health benefits of grass-fed meats I feel it adds a great health value so the cost is lower.

I hope the info I've gathered here helps you to learn about benefits of grass fed meats and how to buy it.

Feeding grain to cattle has got to be one of the dumbest ideas in the history of western civilization. The Food Revolution

Author and small-scale cattleman Michael Pollan wrote recently in the New York Times about what happens to cows when they are taken off of pastures and put into feedlots and fed grain:
"Perhaps the most serious thing that can go wrong with a ruminant on corn is feedlot bloat. The rumen is always producing copious amounts of gas, which is normally expelled by belching during rumination. But when the diet contains too much starch and too little roughage, rumination all but stops, and a layer of foamy slime that can trap gas forms in the rumen. The rumen inflates like a balloon, pressing against the animal's lungs. Unless action is promptly taken to relieve the pressure (usually by forcing a hose down the animal's esophagus), the cow suffocates.

A corn diet can also give a cow acidosis. Unlike that in our own highly acidic stomachs, the normal pH of a rumen is neutral. Corn makes it unnaturally acidic, however, causing a kind of bovine heartburn, which in some cases can kill the animal but usually just makes it sick. Acidotic animals go off their feed, pant and salivate excessively, paw at their bellies and eat dirt. The condition can lead to diarrhea, ulcers, bloat, liver disease and a general weakening of the immune system that leaves the animal vulnerable to everything from pneumonia to feedlot polio." More The Food Revolution

Ever since Jo Robinson wrote Why Grass Fed is Best! in 2000, we’ve known there were many sound reasons to choose grass-fed beef instead of the far more common corn-fed beef found in most stores and restaurants.

Beef from animals raised entirely on their natural diet of grass has much less fat, which is good for our hearts and our waistlines. It’s also better for the environment than crowding cattle onto feedlots, which causes serious problems with air and water quality. Unfortunately, what we’re suddenly becoming more attuned to is another point Robinson makes about feeding cattle corn: This unnatural grain-based diet is producing toxic E. coli bacteria. Source: News From Mother: Why Grass Fed is Best

Most all health food stores, like Whole Foods™, sell beef from cattle that are fed grains. It may be true that the animals are given grains that are organic.

However, organic grain fed beef is only marginally better than commercial grocery store beef where the grains the animals are fed are not organic.

So don't pay twice as much for organic grain fed beef and continue to get inferior quality.

The best way to purchase grass fed beef is to find a local rancher who is raising grass fed cattle and then purchase the meat from him. This will save you the shipping.

Unfortunately, most of us city dwellers do not have easy access or even know ranchers who are raising grass fed cattle.

What if half of your health care costs (better yet, health problems) could be eliminated by doing one thing differently than you do now?

Michael Pollan said it today...

Anyway, here's the scoop:

Children are growing up not knowing where food comes from. They think it comes from the stores, from a box or package. Until we get away from the processed foods and get back to real whole foods - there will be a continual spike in meats poisoned with E-coli and other food borne contaminates.

And there's Dr. Mercola's article:

When Hamburgers Cause Sickness, Paralysis, and Death
Posted by: Dr. Mercola
October 22 2009

hamburger, ground beefAn investigative piece in the New York Times, written by Michael Moss, looked at the plight of Stephanie Smith, a young dance instructor left comatose, near death and now paralyzed from eating a single Cargill hamburger contaminated with E. coli.

Of course, a “single hamburger” can include meat from hundreds of animals. Hamburger meat is often composed of various grades of meat from different parts of cows and even from different slaughterhouses. These cuts of meat are particularly vulnerable to E. coli contamination, but there is no federal requirement for grinders to test their ingredients for the pathogen.

The particular strain of E. coli that infected Smith, known as E. coli O157:H7, is virulent, deadly, persistent and endemic in industrial beef. This year alone almost half a million pounds of E. coli infected ground beef have been recalled nationwide -- and that doesn’t include 800,000 pounds of Cargill beef recalled for contamination with antibiotic-resistant salmonella.

Special Swine Flu Update, Dr. Mercola Alert

ALERT: Special Swine Flu Update

Interview with Barb Loe Fisher, Founder of the National Vaccine Information Center

By Dr. Mercola

I, like many others, consider 60-Minutes an excellent source of journalism. Their executive producer, Don Hewitt died earlier this year after leading the program for 41 years to one of the most successful programs in the history of television. His guiding principle was to tell a story and is actually a strategy I am seeking to implement on this site.

Last Sunday, their lead story was no exception and followed the champion strategy of telling the story of a young high school football player who was infected with the H1N1 virus...

60 Minutes on H1N1 October 18, 2009

You can see the 60 minutes interview from 1977, over 30 years ago. This is in stark contrast to this segment. Admittedly it was done long after the damage was done but if you look at 4:15 you will see one of the CDS consultants clearly state he warned them of this danger and yet when the CDC head is confronted with this, he denies it.

60 Minutes Episode on H1N1 from 30 years ago

Do you think much has changed in the last 30 years? If anything, conflict of interest has gotten much worse.

This past Sunday's 60 Minutes segment did ask some hard questions to the Assistant Surgeon General. However, what was missing is that they didn't ask why CDC officials persist in telling the public that this H1N1 strain of influenza is quite dangerous when the experience of those in the southern hemisphere, which just finished their flu season, is in direct conflict with what the CDC is telling the American people.

Overall 60 Minutes did a fairly good, objective piece of journalism that told the truth. They even pressured the Assistant Surgeon General about the vaccine's safety. On one hand, she's hitching her safety statements to the fact that the H1N1 vaccine is similar to seasonal influenza vaccine, and therefore "safe," even though she realistically CAN'T say that the new H1N1 swine flu vaccine is safe, or that it has been thoroughly tested because it only has been tested for a few weeks.

On the other hand CDC officials are screaming that H1N1 is so different from the seasonal influenza strains that have circulated in the past few decades that a national alarm must be sounded and everyone needs to be so afraid that we all should get vaccinated to prevent a deadly pandemic. This is completely inconsistent and irrational logic.

Come on CDC, you simply can't have it both ways.

The interviewer on the 60 Minutes segment did ask some hard questions, but he, like most of the mainstream media did not ask important questions that are absolutely essential to understand precisely what is going on with this "pandemic"

There have been 81 children from H1N1 in the US. These of course are tragic.

How many pediatric deaths occurred in children who:

  • Were positively lab confirmed as H1N1;

  • Had underlying chronic immune and brain dysfunction

  • Were fully vaccinated according to CDC recommendations

  • Had received influenza vaccine this year

  • Had received seasonal influenza vaccine in previous years

  • Received Tamiflu or another anti-viral prior to death

  • Had a coinciding bacterial infection with H1N1

  • Were never vaccinated - totally unvaccinated

Other Important Observations on the Segment

It is quite clear from the video that Luke did not get worse until after he visited the physician and was given an antipyretic and possibly Tamiflu. Certainly it could have been coincidence but it is an interesting observation.

No mention was made if Luke had been vaccinated for seasonal or H1N1?

Additionally there was no reference made to the last swine flu epidemic in the US when 50 million people got the swine flu vaccine and more people died from the vaccine than the swine flu itself -- and that's not counting all those that developed permanent neurological damage.

Why is no one reminding the public of this well documented and vitally important part of vaccine history?

Your Immune System is Perfectly Capable of Fighting H1N1

Additionally what the 60 minutes segment failed to mention is that it is relatively easy to improve your immune response to fight this infection.

If 99.9% of the people are not having any serious complications from the infection, it would seem perfectly rational to believe that minor lifestyle changes could have dramatic effects on fighting this infection, and none of these involve taking potentially dangerous and unproven vaccine interventions.

Advantage of a Convection Oven

Heating food can cause problems by itself but when you heat it with microwaves you have the additional problem of the creation of negative homeopathic frequencies that further devitalize your food. This is one of the explanations for the following observations:

A study published in the November 2003 issue of The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture found that broccoli "zapped" in the microwave with a little water lost up to 97 percent of the beneficial antioxidant chemicals it contains. By comparison, steamed broccoli lost 11 percent or fewer of its antioxidants.
When microwaving, carcinogenic toxins could be leached from your plastic and paper plates or covers and mix with your food.
The temperature of microwaved food can become extremely hot, at temperatures high enough to cause burns or steam buildup that could explode -- this is especially risky with baby bottles. Plus, microwaving can break down the essential disease-fighting ability of breast milk to protect your baby.
A 1991 lawsuit involving a woman who had hip surgery and died because the blood used in her blood transfusion was warmed in a microwave. Blood is routinely warmed before transfusions, but not by microwave. The microwave altered the blood and it killed the woman.

Is Skim Milk Healthy?

whole milk, whole food
I don't drink skim milk. A minor reason is flavor - flavor is in the fat.

Average butterfat content from old-fashioned cows at the turn of the century was over 4% (or more than 50% of calories). Today butterfat comprises less than 3% (or less than 35% of calories). Worse, consumers have been duped into believing that low-fat and skim milk products are good for them.

Only by marketing low-fat and skim milk as a health food can the modern dairy industry get rid of its excess poor-quality, low-fat milk from modern high-production herds.

Butterfat contains vitamins A and D needed for assimilation of calcium and protein in the water fraction of the milk. Without them protein and calcium are more difficult to utilize and possibly toxic.

Without vitamin D, less than 10 percent of dietary calcium is absorbed. In the American diet, whole milk was the traditional source of vitamins A and D and calcium. Skim milk - especially industrial skim milk - is an inferior source of both. Skim and 2 percent milk must by law, be fortified with synthetic vitamin A and synthetic vitamin D 3. There is evidence that both synthetic vitamins are toxic in excess.

Butterfat is rich in short- and medium chain fatty acids which protect against disease and stimulate the immune system. It contains glyco-spingolipids which prevent intestinal distress and conjugated linoleic acid which has strong anticancer properties.

Real feed for cows is green grass in Spring, Summer and Fall; stored dry hay, silage, hay and root vegetables in Winter. Vital nutrients like vitamins A and D, are greatest in milk from cows eating green grass, especially rapidly growing green grass in the spring and fall. Vitamins A and D are greatly diminished when milk cows are fed commercial feed. Most milk (even most milk labeled "organic") comes from dairy cows that are kept in confinement their entire lives and never see green grass.

Look for milk from grass fed cows. You might not find non-pasteurized (real) milk at your local natural food store but it is possible to find non-homogenized full fat milk from grass fed cows.

Grass Fed Meat Just Makes Sense!

grass fed cowsThis last week I forgot to order more beef and I didn't make it to the Saint Paul Farmer's Market for my eggs and meat. I really wanted a good roast so I went to my local grocery store to see if they had grass fed beef.

I didn't find any so I asked for a grass fed beef roast. (Dr. Heidi taught us to ask for grass fed meats because if they see a demand for things they will at least try to add it, or maybe not....)

Our conversation went something like this:

Me: I'm looking for a grass-fed beef roast, do you have any?

Butcher: Sure we have some good roasts right here.

Me: Are those from grass fed cattle?

Butcher: Hmm, grass fed? I don't think you can feed grass to cows.

Me: Really? Well, they're ruminant animals, so I think that's what they're supposed to eat.

Butcher: I don't think so. They love corn. They need vitamins and minerals and stuff.

Me: No come back.... I was disappointed and surprised that an "expert" did not have a clue about what he was selling.

Butcher: Now this, he points down at large, marbled roast in meat case, this is corn-fed beef. It's the best tasting beef you can get because the cows ate corn, not grass.

Me: Yeah, well, um, thanks anyway.

So my question for you is this;

If you had a tooth ache would you go to a foot doctor? Of course not! So why do so many people buy meat from a meat counter instead of the rancher that raises his animals on grass?

The ranchers I buy from knows cows and the health benefit for cows and us when they eat grass.

They feed their families the same meat they sell me.

They are absolutely committed to the highest standards of quality and safety.

They don't use pesticides or herbicides on the pastures where cattle graze. They don't use additives or preservatives of any kind.

They never give growth hormones or feed-grade antibiotics to the animals.

They graze the animals on a rotating schedule so that they are always eating the freshest, lushest forage plants. This is also good for the land, since it ensures all forage plants times of rest between grazings.

They ensure that the animals always drink only clean, pure water.

They are dedicated to humane, free-range, stress-free animals.

The choice is still up to you but for me I'll support grass feeding farmers and ranchers because that's just the right thing, for me. I can't stand the thought of eating feed-lot meats and eggs knowing how these animals are abused. Not to forget - we are what we eat, so we are corn and other crap if we eat feed-lot animals.

Are Health Problems Related to Aspartame Use?

Would it surprise you to learn aspartame may cause you to gain weight? It’s true -- products marketed as “reduced calorie,” “sugar-free,” and “diet” can actually sabotage your weight control efforts.

There are also health risks related to using aspartame. The following is from Dr. Mercola.

You might not realize you’re having a reaction to aspartame. In fact, most people don’t make the connection, and a tremendous amount of time and money is spent by aspartame “reactors” (people sensitive to the chemical), trying to find out why they are sick.

To determine if you’re a reactor, take the following steps:

  1. Eliminate all artificial sweeteners from your diet for one to two weeks.
(Note: If you typically consume aspartame in caffeinated drinks, you’ll want to gradually reduce your intake in order to avoid caffeine withdrawal symptoms.)
  2. After one to two weeks of being artificial sweetener-free, reintroduce aspartame or other artificial sweetener in a significant quantity (at least three servings daily) and avoid other artificial sweeteners during this period.
  3. Do this for one to three days and notice how you feel, especially as compared to when you were consuming no artificial sweeteners.
  4. If you don’t notice a difference in how you feel after re-introducing aspartame, it’s a safe bet you’re able to tolerate aspartame acutely, meaning your body doesn’t have an immediate, adverse response. However, this doesn’t mean your health won’t be damaged in the long run by this chemical and its breakdown products.

Keep in mind aspartame is completely metabolized by the human body, and its byproducts can create a serious risk to your health. Neurological damage can occur from long-term aspartame use.

List of Digestive Enzymes

The term enzymes refers to certain specific proteins that function as catalysts in the process of breaking down of other complex proteins into simple usable forms. Numerous enzymes control different processes occurring in our body.

The digestive enzymes are a group of enzymes that help in the process of digestion. These digestive enzymes are either produced by certain specific organs such as the pancreas in our body or by the microorganisms that inhabit the small and large intestines.1 Along with digestive properties some of the digestive enzymes also have protective features that guard the body against infections, diseases and cancers.1, 2

A deficiency of these digestive enzymes may lead to many disorders which may require supplementation of the deficient digestive enzyme.3

Acid Proteases
Proteases are certain digestive enzymes that help in the breakdown of proteins. The proteases are widely used in detergent industry, dairy industry and meat industries. The applications of proteases in medical industry are also growing widely.4 The acid proteases are known to be active in acidic environments (such as the stomach) and are helpful in the digestion of complex proteins.5 Three major proteins are included in the group of acid proteases. These include: Phytepsin, Plasmepsin IV and Cathepsin D.6 The acid proteases present in medicinal seeds have been found to be effective against stomach disorders such as stomach ulcers, gastric irritation, lack of appetite and many others. These may have a role in better digestion of proteins in the stomach. Medicinal plants such as Carum copticum, Punica glantum, and Allium sepa are used in traditional medicine for the cure of stomach disorders and these plants and their seeds are said to be rich in acid proteases and alkaline proteases.7

Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is a type of carbohydrate that is completely soluble in our body. It has properties of both sugar and starch and is easily digested in the body. Maltodextrin has very little or no sweetness and is quite bland in taste. Because of this property maltodextrin is suitable for diabetic individuals. It is used widely in processed foods.8 Maltodextrin is used as a bulking agent in puddings, frozen desserts, cakes and many other dry mix products. The maltodextrin carbohydrate is an essential component of infant formulas. Maltodextrin is also used as a fat and oil replacer wherein it replaces almost 50% of the fats in processed foods.9,10 Maltodextrin is also available as a separate fat replacement product. The use of maltodextrin as the bulking agent in low-calorie dry mixes reduces the amount of artificial sweeteners used in such products. Maltodextrin is beneficial in diabetics, individuals who want to cut down their glucose intake and for weight loss diets.9

Proteases
Proteases belong to the group of digestive enzymes that actively take part in the digestion and breakdown of proteins.4 These enzymes are produced and secreted in our body by different organs such as the stomach, small intestine, pancreas and other glands that are present along the gastrointestinal tract. The microorganisms present in the colon are also known to produce different types of proteases that help in breaking the proteins. Furthermore, proteases are also produced in different cells and tissues in our body. Proteases are mainly known for their digestive action. However, certain proteases may also have a role in the regulation of growth and development of different cells and tissues. Proteases are known to control certain key mechanisms in the processes such as clot formation, inflammation, and repair. Some protease enzymes may have a role in the progression of numerous disorders in the body requiring the administration of medications that are commonly referred to as protease inhibitors. 11

Amylase
Amylase is a digestive enzyme that is mainly produced by the salivary glands (in the mouth) and the pancreas. The amylase enzyme is necessary for the breakdown of carbohydrates that we consume into simpler substances for easy digestion. Commercially available amylase enzymes are obtained from certain micro-organisms and are used in different industries including food industry. Amylase helps in the breakdown of carbohydrates both in the mouth as well as the small intestine. 12 Digestive enzymes such as amylase are commonly used in brewing and winemaking, processed foods and other commercially available food supplements.13 The production of amylase enzyme in the pancreas may be affected due to certain disorders that affect the pancreas. This may lead to a deficiency of amylase enzyme requiring supplementation. Amylase supplementations are commonly advised in a condition known as malabsorption syndrome which is characterized by the body’s inability to breakdown and absorb essential nutrients from the diet.14

Amyloglucosidase
This digestive enzyme is also known as glucoamylase and is responsible for the breakdown of starch to form glucose molecules. Amyloglucosidase belongs to the group of amylolyitic enzymes.15 These digestive enzymes are generally produced in our body to help in the process of digestion. Amyloglucosidase can also be obtained from plant and animal sources. Microorganisms are commonly used for the production of amylogucosidase for industrial and medicinal use. The industries that have profound use of amylogucosidase enzyme include textile, food and brewing industries. Amyloglucosidase enzyme is also used in the manufacture of glucose and fructose syrups in the food industry. Furthermore, the use amyloglucosidase enzyme in the clinical and medical fields is also being studied widely. A wide use of amyloglucosidase has been noted in the food and pharmaceutical industry where it has been used as fat and oil substitutes, moisture retention compounds and for stabilizing the flavors and spices while packing. 16, 17

Cellulase
Cellulase is a digestive enzyme that is helpful in the digestion of cellulose which is a complex carbohydrate. The cellulose forms an important part of the wall of the plant cells. Cellulase is produced by microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria and protozoa, while it is not produced in the human body. Cellulose enzyme is helpful in the breakdown of plant products being consumed. 18 Cellulose is considered as an excellent source of bioenergy and can be useful for the production of several biobased products. The role of cellulase enzyme is quite vital in this process as it is the key enzyme that breaks down the cellulose to release substances such as glucose which has several uses.19 Cellulase enzyme is widely used in the textile industry for different processes involved in the manufacture of clothes and other textile products.20 Cellulase enzyme supplements are available for human use and are believed to help in improving the digestion process.

Lactase
Lactase enzyme is the specific digestive enzyme that helps in the digestion of lactose, commonly referred to as milk protein. Lactose commonly found in cow’s milk is broken down by the lactase enzyme into simpler forms such as glucose for easier absorption in the body. Our body generally produces sufficient amounts of lactase enzyme that helps in breaking down the milk proteins. However, in individuals suffering from a condition known as lactose intolerance, the amount of lactase produced is very less. Consumption of milk or milk products by such individuals can result in the occurrence of symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal distension, flatulence, diarrhea and pain in the abdomen. Lactase supplementation has been found to benefit individuals suffering from a deficiency of this digestive enzyme. 21 Addition of lactase enzymes in the feeds of babies that are born prematurely has been noted to promote the growth of the premature babies in a few studies.22

Invertase
Invertase enzyme breaks the carbohydrate known as sucrose (commonly known as table sugar) into glucose and fructose that are easily digested and absorbed by the body. The invertase enzyme helps to digest sucrose within the cells of the small intestine. Invertase also known as sucrase is commonly used in confectionary industries in the manufacture of chocolates. Invertase is used especially in chocolates with liquid or soft juices in the centre. Invertase enzyme is also used in the production of invert syrups. Commercially available invertase are obtained from yeast that are commonly referred to as baker’s yeast.23, 24 The invertase enzyme is considered essential for the growth and differentiation of various cells which are mainly dependent on glucose for its metabolic activities.25 Sufficient amount of these enzymes are required for optimal conversion of sucrose into glucose in the cells of the intestine from where it is transported to other cells in the body.

Maltase
Maltase enzyme helps in the conversion of maltose (a type of sugar) into glucose for absorption and utilization in the body. A deficiency of this enzyme leads to increased accumulation of glucose in the form of glycogen (a primary form of glucose that needs to be broken down further for utilization) in body. Pompe’s disease also referred to as glycogen storage disease type II or acid maltase deficiency disorder is characterized by deficiency of maltase in the body of the affected individuals.26, 27 This disorder is associated with multiple abnormalities in the body which if untreated can be mortal. Pompe’s disease affects the muscles more frequently and is noticed in newly born babies. The disabilities arising due to affected muscle activity generally results in the death of the affected babies within the first year of life. Enzyme supplementation for the correction of acid maltase deficiency is commonly advised as a therapy for Pompe’s disease.28

Lipase
Lipases are a group of digestive enzymes that convert the fats into fatty acids and glycerol. The fats that are consumed in the diet are broken down in the stomach and the intestine by the action of lipase enzymes. The fatty acids and glycerol thus obtained are utilized by the body for different purposes.29 Lipase is produced in the pancreas and the glands present in the small intestine. A deficiency of this enzyme that is commonly associated with certain digestive disorders or certain specific disorders of the pancreas results in abnormal accumulation of fats in the body leading to further complications. Lipase enzyme is also proposed to have a regulatory effect on the insulin (hormone that controls blood glucose levels) producing cells in the pancreas.29, 30 Supplementation of lipase enzyme with lipase supplements developed from microbial sources is often advised in the treatment of disorders of the pancreas. Lipase enzyme supplementation has also been found to be beneficial in conditions such as lactose intolerance.31

Papain
Papain is a proteolytic (protein digesting) enzyme that is present in the papaya fruit. This enzyme is obtained from the juice of raw papaya fruits that are processed to form the dry papain powder. Papain enzyme is widely used in different industries including breweries, pharmaceutics, food, meat and fish processing industries.32 The papain enzyme has been used with other proteolytic enzymes as an effective medicine for its wide number of properties such as anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, immune-protecting and anti-cancer properties. Papain enzyme is believed to possess anti-cancer properties wherein it inhibits the growth and differentiation of the cancer cells and prevents their progression.33 Papain enzyme has also been used to treat skin wounds and ulcers that are present since a long duration of time. The dead cells and tissues in such wounds clear faster with the use of papain enzyme thereby hastening the healing process.34 Further researches are being conducted to identify other possible uses of papain enzyme.

Bromelain
Bromelain belongs to the class of proteolytic (protein digesting) enzymes that are derived from pineapple. This enzyme is known for its beneficial properties that are useful in treating a wide variety of disorders. Bromelain prevents the occurrence of edema (abnormal collection of fluids), inflammation, abnormal collection of platelets (which usually result in formation of clots) and clot formations within the blood vessels. The anti-inflammatory effect of bromelain has promoted its use in various disorders such as asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, arthritis and many others. It is also known to benefit heart disorders by prevention of clot formation in the blood vessels that supply the heart. Certain amount of anticancer activity has also been reported with the use of bromelain wherein it prevents the progression of cancer cells. Bromelain also promotes the actions of the antibiotic medications being administered thereby ensuring faster healing. Furthermore, bromelain is also believed to promote rapid healing of burn wounds on the skin.35, 36
