Killer at Large - Why Obesity is America's Greatest Threat - Movie Review

I just watched Killer at Large- Why Obesity is America's Greatest Threat. It was very eye opening even when I try so very hard to feed my family Real Food! Right away I watched in disbelief when a 12-year-old girl had liposuction, with her parents blessings! The girl is in and out throughout the movie, showing her weight loss and then the re-gain! 7 months later this now 13-year-old is looking for a new way to lose the weight she regained!

The movie shows people with diabetes that have lost a leg and have open oozing sores, all related to complications related to obesity.

According to the National Institute of Health, obesity and its related illnesses cost taxpayers $117 billion dollars in 2002 alone and are estimated to kill more than 100,000 Americans a year.

If you didn’t know obesity is a problem, Killer at Large will show you the truth and quickly. This documentary doesn’t waste a minute. It supplies viewers information about the causes of obesity (there are so many, genetics, marketing, stress, emotional eating, addictive behaviors, contradictory government agricultural and health policies), the effects of obesity (diabetes in particular) and the failure of lawmakers and policymakers to act, despite decades of warnings from health officials including Surgeons General, thanks to politics and money.

Directed by Steven Greenstreet, “Killer at Large” examines the obesity epidemic in America with a level of detail that has never been seen in a movie theatre. “When people hear we made a movie about obesity, they seem to instantly think of Morgan Spurlock’s film ‘Supersize Me’, and that was a good film, but it was too simplistic in its view,” said Greenstreet. “No one single thing causes obesity and there are causes that you would never possibly imagine. Our goal with ‘Killer at Large’ is to show how many different factors are playing into the problem, who should share in the blame beyond personal responsibility, and what can be done to correct it.”

“We have expert after expert in our film,” added Producer Bryan Young, “tell us that this is the first generation of children that are going to have shorter life expectancies than their parents. It’s absolutely shocking the sort of things we found out in this film and my ardent hope is that people watch this film and decide that there are changes they can help make in their communities to fix this problem.”

In the film, former Surgeon General Richard Carmona explains that the problem of obesity “will dwarf 9/11 or any other terrorist event” in what it will cost us in money and lives.

Sadly, the solutions coming from the government and industries who share culpability in this problem range from the absurd (industry should regulate itself) to the obvious (consumers should simply be exercising more). “Killer at Large” details why this approach not only doesn’t help, but is actually making the problem worse.

The film features interviews and footage of numerous public figures discussing the politics and causes and effects of obesity, including former President Bill Clinton, consumer advocate Ralph Nader, filmmaker Neil LaBute, Senator Tom Harkin, Senator Sam Brownback, Governor Mike Huckabee, and a number of bestselling authors such as Michael Pollan, Chef Ann Cooper, and Dr. Brian Wansink among many others. “Killer at Large” is available on DVD from killeratlarge.com, Disinformation Company and from Amazon.com.
Run time 102 minutes plus 80 minutes of extras, including commentary, excluded scenes and an educational version.

Next week I will be giving 3 copies to my readers so check back. If you don't win a copy here I recommend buying this movie and have your family watch it, especially the kids.

Omega- 3 Good Heart Health!

Did you know that Omega-3s Linked to Lower Heart-Risking Inflammation?

A new finding adds weight to prior evidence that diets rich in omega-3s may lower levels of a protein associated with inflammation and higher heart risks.

Health authorities worldwide recommend fatty fish and fish oil to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its adverse outcomes. The adverse outcomes that omega-3-rich diets may help prevent include stroke and second heart attacks.

Read More Here.

Here's what some experts say about the importance of diet and omega-3 fatty acids to your health:

“Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids can stop arrhythmia before it triggers sudden death from heart attacks. That makes fish such as salmon as potentially potent as any high tech heart drug and considerably cheaper to stock up on.”
– Dr. Alexander Leaf, Professor Emeritus, Harvard University

“Omega-3 fatty acids have so many biological roles because they are a primary element of health for virtually every cell and organ system in the body. Along with their partners, the omega-6 fatty acids, they keep our bodies in balance, modulating such basic physiological functions as inflammation, cell signaling, blood pressure, immune response, and the electrical excitability of heart and brain cells.”
– Andrew Stoll, Faculty, Harvard Medical School

"By far, the best type of omega-3 fats are those found in fish. That's because the omega-3 in fish is high in two fatty acids crucial to human health, DHA and EPA. These two fatty acids are pivotal in preventing heart disease, cancer, and many other diseases. The human brain is also highly dependent on DHA, and maintaining high DHA levels can help deter depression, schizophrenia, memory loss, and Alzheimer's. Omega-3 is also very important for pregnant women and children, as researchers are now also linking inadequate intake of omega-3 to premature birth and low birth weight, and to hyperactivity in children."
– Joseph Mercola, D.O., founder/director, The Optimal Wellness Center

“My anti-aging patients often start out eating fish two to three times a week. When they see how quickly their skin improves, they are quick to increase their intake to five to seven fish meals a week."
– Nicholas Perricone, M.D., author of The Wrinkle Cure, The Perricone Prescription, The Acne Cure

Smokers and Gum Disease Study

Scientists in the USA have discovered why smokers may be more prone to chronic gum disease (periodontitis). One of the bacteria responsible for this infection responds to cigarette smoke – changing its properties and the way it infects a smokers mouth.

The study published recently in the Society for Applied Microbiology journal Environmental Microbiology, showed that the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis adapts and changes its DNA and membrane proteins in response to cigarette smoke.

Several genes of P. gingivalis associated with its virulence (infectivity), detoxification, oxidative stress mechanisms and DNA repair are altered by exposure to cigarette smoke. As a result, the expression of a number of the proteins in the cell membrane is changed. This affects important characteristics of the bacterial cells themselves and how the immune system recognizes this pathogen.

This could explain why smokers are more likely to be resistant to treatment for periodontitis and are more susceptible to oral disease caused by infection with P. gingivalis.

Finding an effective treatment for smokers infected with P. gingivalis will be easier now that these changes in the bacterium's 'properties' have been identified.

University of Louisville researcher, Dr David Scott said: "It has long been known that smokers are more susceptible to periodontitis than are non-smokers. However, the reasons why are not so clear. Our study shows, for the first time, that components in cigarette smoke alter key characteristics of a major bacterial pathogen which, subsequently, changes how our immune system reacts to it. It may turn out that we need to develop alternate treatment plans for smokers and non-smokers". Source ScienceDaily

The Story of Stuff - What it Means to YOU

Story of Stuff

I just watched a short video, The Story of Stuff that will change the way I shop and live. Do you know what food has the highest doseage of toxic chemicals? I was shocked to learn it is the food for our babies, it's breast milk. Why? Because of the toxins we are exposed to that are building up in our body. I have no idea why it took me this long to see this important video, Story of Stuff. Please don't wait - take 20 minutes and see how STUFF is the direct link to our loss of natural resources, trashing our planet yearly with 4 billion pounds of toxins, filling our bodies with toxins. Just watch the video and see if this shakes your values right down to your bone marrow.

I will NOT buy the next latest gadget or trendy summer clothes. My shorts from last summer will work just fine. I know who really pays for my ability to buy stuff so cheap. See here.

Mindfulness Meditation

What are the Different Types of Meditation?

While there are many different types of meditation, there are two general classifications: concentrative and mindfulness. In concentrative meditation, you focus on clearing your mind to provide you with greater concentration, awareness and clarity. In mindfulness meditation, you open your mind to become more aware of the things around you, such as scents, sounds and thoughts.

The easiest way to engage in concentrative meditation is to sit quietly and focus on your breathing. Relax and count your breaths as you breathe through your nose. Take deep breaths, hold them and let them out slowly. This helps you to get oxygen into the lowest portions of your lungs.

There are times when you mind may wander, but you refocus on your breathing to get rid of your thoughts. You can also focus on an object when meditating or you may want to repeat a phrase or a word. This is called mantra meditation in which you can choose to repeat the word or phrase aloud or silently in your head.

If you are agitated or worried about something, your breathing will be short and fast when you first start this type of meditation. As you start to relax, your breathing will slow down and become regulated. As you focus on your breathing or on an object, your mind will become absorbed with the regulation of your breathing and all other thoughts will vanish from your mind.

Zen meditation is one type of concentrative meditation in which you concentrate on the functioning of the heart. There are three main aims in this form:
To develop the power of concentration

To awaken your inner sense of wisdom

To recognize the action of the Supreme Being on your inner self

The idea is that once you are able to rid yourself of the thoughts of everyday life, you can reach that inner sense of peace that exists in everyone. It helps to calm the mind and body to give you insight into the nature of your existence. You must be patient and persistent in meditating in order for your mind to become clear.

Raja Yoga Meditation is another type of concentrative meditation. This form of meditation helps you to gain control of your mind to enable to you to develop a sense of peace. The life force of your body moves through the spine so that awareness is able to move into the “Third Eye” which is a point between your eyebrows.

Your mind is not passive and there can be many thoughts racing through it. You try to free yourself of these mindless thoughts and focus on the real meaning of meditating to achieve a pleasant feeling throughout the body.

WildDivine Meditation.

Mindfulness meditation involves a passing parade of thoughts, emotions and images through your mind. You sit in a meditating position and instead of trying to banish the thoughts from your mind, you allow them to enter. You do acknowledge that they are present but you don’t concentrate on them. This allows you to develop a calm approach to your problems so that you don’t react quickly.

Instead of focusing on one individual thought or scene, you allow each though to become part of the bigger picture. It trains your mind to meditate on things in your life over which you have no control so that you have a heightened sense of inner peace that will enable you to go on with your life in spite or extreme difficulties.

Better Whey Of Life Yogurt Review

I was recently contacted by Better Whey of Life Yogurt to see if I would like some samples of their yogurt. This is not your Yoplait or Dannon Yogurt. It is a high "whey protein" healthy yogurt. I was excited to test it because I love yogurt and use Whey Protein in my morning drinks.

Rating this from 1 – 10 with 10 being best I have to give 8 plus.

The product isn’t easy to find so I had to take a bit away because of that. It's great that the company is only promoting the yogurt in Natural Food Stores and in time I know more Whole Foods Markets and maybe local Co-Op Grocers will carry it.
One flavor is my favorite and if I ate the same one daily I would get tired of it really fast. But, I found I could add fruit to the yogurt and it was tasty.

Whey Protein
I know that a high protein diet DOES help to burn fat while giving you energy. The protein must be of high quality and Better Whey of Life used whey protein. By the way I have used Whey Protein in my morning drinks for several years. It took a while to get used to the grainy texture. The whey protein in Better Whey of Life is not grainy. The yogurt is smooth and creamy.

Better Whey of Life plain yogurt has 17g of protein in each 6oz. cup. The 4 flavored yogurts have 15g of protein.

Less Sugar and it's not sweet
30% less sugar than most yogurts using natural cane sugar and inulin, a soluble fiber found in plant foods that happen to be sweet tasting. I’m sure the inulin is added for the probiotic fiber benefits but still it adds a bit of sweet taste. The yogurt is not sweet, it is tart like Kefir or even Kombucha, the fermented tart. No, it’s not sweet like popular brands of yogurt. If you are used to the sweet yogurts eating this yogurt will take some getting used to.

Keep your gut healthy and stay regular with this yogurt.
Along with the inulin for healthy gut bacteria and probiotic fiber it has live and active cultures from S. thermophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. acidophilus and Bifidus.

Who is Better Whey of Life for?
I feel the Better Whey of Life Yogurts is good for people on a high protein weight control food plan. It does have 17g to 23g of carbs so it would not be a fit for the Low-Carb diets except for a celebration or exception when craving ice cream!

It works as a snack for me because I do need the high protein.

Taste
I sampled the Strawberry Banana first. It was tart and I really couldn’t taste the strawberry or banana. The texture was smooth and creamy. It tasted OK but the flavor was not my favorite.

Next I tried the Peach Mango. YUM, this is my favorite and I will buy this one. There is loads of taste, it’s creamy, smooth, and thick. It’s tart but not sour. YUM….

I’m not much for vanilla so when I sampled the French Vanilla I added some organic blueberries. It was yummy, still not my fav but it was good and I would eat it again with fruit.

Lastly I tried the Acai Mixed Berry. I’m not an Acai berry fan so this was not the one for me. I will not eat this one again but if you like Acai or mixed berries this one would probably fit your yogurt taste.

Details:
This yogurt comes in plain, Acai Mixed Berry, Peach Mango, Strawberry Banana, and French Vanilla.

6oz. cups
130 - 145 calories
15 - 17g protein
7 - 14g sugar (30% less than popular brands)
3g - prebiotic fiber

Find at Whole Foods Markets and some health food stores. Check here...

Price varies, my local Whole Foods Market price is $1.69 each. There are coupons at the Better Whey of Life site and you can check to see if you can buy it locally yet. If it is available to you I would recommend trying it especially if you are on a higher protein food plan and need the extra prebiotic fiber and probiotics for a healthy gut.

All in all I like this yogurt and will buy it for myself. My husband and son did not like it because it wasn't sweet. That's OK because I can buy it all for me!

Thanks Kasey for sending the samples - Your yogurt is very good and a great source of high quailty protein!

How to Dispose Old Drugs

vitamin pills
At the Leesburg Pharmacy, located in a Loudoun County strip mall, a big, round fish tank sits atop the prescription counter. There are no fish inside, not even any water: The tank is a repository for unused medications. People can drop off the Vicodin that didn't get used once the pain of a root canal subsided. Or the heart pills remaining after a grandmother's death. Or an asthma inhaler that had passed its expiration date. Or an antidepressant that turned out to have unpleasant side effects.

Once a week, the tank is emptied; the drugs are packed in cartons by pharmacy personnel and ultimately incinerated by a commercial waste firm.

"Our customers are thrilled because they had no idea what else to do with this stuff," said Cheri Garvin, chief executive of the employee-owned pharmacy.

These are customers who are trying to do the responsible thing. Over the years, Americans have been alerted to the dangers of a lot of problematic waste materials -- paint thinner, batteries, air conditioners. But leftover pills can seem so small, so easily disposable, that many people routinely flush them down toilets, wash them down sinks or throw them in trash that goes to a landfill.

And then they often end up in places where they shouldn't be, like the public water supply.

10 Tips For Safe Meat Grilling (Cut Cancer Risks)

grilling meat
The American Institute of Cancer Research is urging everyone to rethink the pastime of barbecuing meat.

After analyzing the results of 7,000 studies, the Institute concluded that grilling any meat -- whether red, white or fish -- produces potent carcinogens.

The high heat of grilling reacts with proteins in red meat, poultry and fish, creating heterocyclic amines, which are linked to cancer. Another form of cancer-causing agents, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, are created when juices from meats drip and hit the heat source. They then rise in smoke and can stick to the meat.

The Institute took particular aim at processed meats like hot dogs, sausages, bacon, ham, pastrami, salami and any meat that has been salted, smoked or cured. The chemicals used to preserve the meat increase the production of cancer-causing compounds, regardless of how the meat is cooked.

The Institute’s report said it “could find no amount of processed meat that is safe to eat.”Sources:
NorthJersey.com May 25, 2008
American Institute for Cancer Research April 30, 2008

From Dr. Mercola's health site:
I know the thought of giving up your barbecue grill is about as un-American as you can get, especially right as summer is approaching, but I do believe it is a wise move for your health.

But it’s not just the grill that’s the problem.

Any time you cook meat at high temperatures, whether you’re grilling, frying, broiling, etc., some pretty nasty chemicals are created:

Heterocyclic Amines (HCAs): These form when food is cooked at high temperatures, and they’re linked to cancer. In terms of HCA, the worst part of the meat is the blackened section, which is why you should always avoid charring your meat, and never eat blackened sections.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs): When fat drips onto the heat source, causing excess smoke, and the smoke surrounds your food, it can transfer cancer-causing PAHs to the meat.

Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs): When food is cooked at high temperatures (including when it is pasteurized or sterilized), it increases the formation of AGEs in your food. When you eat the food, it transfers the AGEs into your body. AGEs build up in your body over time leading to oxidative stress, inflammation and an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and kidney disease.

It’s ironic, isn’t it, that so many people are convinced they must cook their foods until they’re browned and “well-done” to avoid bacteria, when in so doing they are creating and consuming highly toxic substances that will shorten their lifespan?

There are many people who are convinced that being a vegetarian is the ultimate healthy lifestyle eating plan. They support their position with loads of scientific studies. But it is my belief that most of these studies are correct because the common way most people consume animal protein is COOKED, or worse yet grilled, creating all the toxic substances discussed above.

To the best of my knowledge there are no studies comparing raw animal-food-based diets versus cooked vegetarian diets, but even if there were they still could be flawed because they most likely would not factor in the person’s nutritional type.

Remember a carb nutritional type eating large amounts of raw animal food will do just as poorly as a protein type on raw vegan diet. You simply need the right food for your specific nutritional type.

One variable that to consider is that you simply don’t have to be perfect in your diet. I fully believe you just need to eat very well 80-95% of the time. If you do that your body typically has enough reserve to compensate for the damage you cause. However if you are really sick or have a terminal illness you will want to get as close to 100% as practically possible to improve your chances of recovery.

Do You STILL Want to Over-Cook Your Food?

If so, consider the following, quite sobering, statistics:
1. In one study, researchers found that those who ate their beef medium-well or well-done had more than three times the risk of stomach cancer as those who ate their beef rare or medium-rare.
2. Other studies have shown that an increased risk of developing pancreatic, colorectal, and breast cancer is associated with high intakes of well-done, fried, or barbecued meats.
3. One study found that a compound called PhIP, formed when meat is charred at high temperatures, causes prostate cancer in rats.
4. Scientists have estimated that the average cancer risk because of heterocyclic amine exposure ranges from 1 per 10,000 for the average person to more than 1 per 50 for those ingesting large amounts of well-done muscle meats, especially flame-grilled chicken.

All Meat is NOT Inherently Bad for You
As usual, there are errors in studies like the one above. If you take it at face value, you are left with the incorrect notion that meat is something you should only eat sparingly, if at all. Yet there are numerous factors that influence the quality or health-value of the meat you eat, even above and beyond how it’s cooked. That includes:

Whether or not it’s organic (conventional meat is loaded with pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals)

Whether or not it’s grass-fed (essential for healthy meat)

Whether or not it contains nitrates, preservatives linked to cancer

What it did point out is that processed meats are a big-time no-no, and I have to agree with them there. While you can find natural and organic processed meats, the unprocessed varieties are still preferable.

The other factor that plays a role in how healthy meat is for you? As I said earlier, your nutritional type. Some of you (including myself) thrive on red meat while others need white meats or mostly other protein sources, like eggs. It all depends on your unique biochemistry.

For Those of You Who Won’t Have Summer Without Your Grill
I suspect this may be a great number of you, so I will include some tips to minimize your risk.

1. Limit the amount of grilled foods you eat, and make sure you’re eating plenty of other raw foods in your diet.
2. You can reduce the amount of PAHs when you grill by not cooking fatty meats, and by trimming the fat off before you grill.
3. When grilling, cook your food with indirect heat, such as on a rack rather than directly on the coals. Cooking on a cedar plank is also helpful.
4. Always avoid charring your meat (and don't eat the black or brown parts).
5. Cook meat partially before putting it on the grill, or cook smaller pieces of meat, which take less time to cook, and therefore give HCAs less time to form.
6. You can reduce the amount of AGEs in your food by using an acidic marinade that contains lemon juice or vinegar.
7. Marinating meats before grilling or broiling them can reduce HCAs (according to some experts by 90 percent or more). However, only use natural ingredients for marinades, and keep the coating thin to avoid charring.
8. Flip your burgers often, as this will help cut down on HCAs.
9. Add blueberries or cherries to your burgers, as they can also help prevent the formation of HCAs.
10. Avoid grilling hot dogs, bratwurst and other processed meats, as these seem to be among the worst offenders.
11. Only grill high-quality, organic and grass-fed meats.
12. Cook the meat as little as possible. Rare or medium-rare at the absolute most. You can also quickly sear the meat on both sides, leaving the inside mostly raw. This gives the illusion that you’re eating cooked meat, with many of the benefits of raw.
