Frito-Lay Recalls Pistachios, March 2009

pistachio recall
(March 31, 2009) – FDA announced the voluntary recall of Frito-Lay branded in-shell salted pistachios due to potential contamination with salmonella. Frito-Lay has received no reports of illness related to this product; the company is issuing this recall as a precaution.

The affected product is 1.75 oz. packages of Frito-Lay branded Salted Pistachios (in shell) with sell-by dates between 14-Jul-09 through 29-Dec-09 and the UPC code: 0 28400 03888 1. The date is located on the front of each package.

No other code date, package size or flavor is impacted. This is the only Frito-Lay product impacted by this recall. This voluntary recall is not related to the recent peanut/ peanut butter recalls.

This product has been distributed to retail stores in the United States and Canada. The pistachios used in this product were supplied by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., which yesterday announced a recall of selected lots of pistachios. Setton Pistachio is recalling pistachios from the 2008 crop year.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Consumers with any product of the date and package size noted above can contact Frito-Lay Consumer Affairs at 1-800-352-4477.

Pistachio Recall - March 30, 2009

pistachio recalls
FDA Alerts Consumers to Recall of Certain Pistachios
FDA and California Inspectors Identify Salmonella

The FDA and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are investigating Salmonella contamination in pistachio products sold by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc, Calif.

The company has stopped all distribution of processed pistachios and will issue a voluntary recall involving approximately 1 million pounds of its products. Because the pistachios were used as ingredients in a variety of foods, it is likely this recall will impact many products. In addition, the investigation at the company is ongoing and may lead to additional pistachio product recalls.

The contamination involves multiple strains of Salmonella. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Thus far, several illnesses have been reported by consumers that may be associated with the pistachios. It is not yet known whether any of the Salmonella strains found in the pistachio products are linked to an outbreak. The FDA is conducting genetic testing of the samples to pursue all links.

FDA is working closely with the pistachio industry and recommends that consumers avoid eating pistachio products until further information is available about the scope of affected products.

FDA will provide a searchable database of affected products at www.fda.gov and will continue to update the public. Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA

FDA first learned of the problem on March 24, when it was informed by Kraft Foods that its Back To Nature Trail Mix was found to be contaminated with Salmonella. Kraft had identified the source of the contamination to be pistachios from Setton and conducted a recall.

* This product should not be confused with the line of meal replacement and related products that are marketed as conventional foods under the brand name “Slim-Fast®”. The manufacturer of Slim-Fast®, Unilever United States, Inc., maintains that the Slim Fast product which appears on this list is not in any way associated with, sponsored or approved by, or otherwise related in any way to the Slim-Fast® brand of meal replacement and related products.

“These tainted weight loss products pose a great risk to public health because they contain undeclared ingredients and, in some cases, contain prescription drugs in amounts that greatly exceed maximum recommended dosages,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Consumers have no way of knowing that these products contain dangerous drugs that could cause serious consequences to their health.”

On Dec. 22, 2008, the FDA warned consumers not to purchase or consume 28 different products marketed for weight loss. On Jan. 8, 2009, the FDA expanded the list of tainted weight loss products to include 41 additional tainted products. The FDA will continue to update this list as warranted.

The products listed above, some of which are marketed as dietary supplements, are promoted and sold on various Web sites and in some retail stores and beauty salons. Some of the products claim to be “natural” or to contain only “herbal” ingredients, but actually contain potentially harmful ingredients not listed on the products' labels or in promotional advertisements. These products have not been approved by the FDA, are illegal, and include the following undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients:

sibutramine (an appetite suppressant available by prescription only and a controlled substance)
fenproporex – a controlled substance not approved for marketing in the United States;
fluoxetine – an antidepressant available by prescription only;
bumetanide – a potent diuretic available by prescription only;
furosemide – a potent diuretic available by prescription only;
rimonabant – a drug not approved for marketing in the United States;
cetilistat – an experimental obesity drug not approved for marketing in the United States;
phenytoin – an anti-seizure medication available by prescription only; and
phenolphthalein – a solution used in chemical experiments and a suspected cancer-causing agent that is not approved for marketing in the United States.

The FDA has inspected a number of companies associated with the sale of these illegal products and is currently seeking product recalls. Based on the FDA’s inspections and the companies’ inadequate responses to recall requests, the FDA may take additional enforcement steps, such as issuing warning letters or initiating seizures, injunctions, or criminal charges.

The FDA advises consumers who have used any products containing these ingredients to stop taking them and consult their health care professional immediately. The FDA also encourages consumers to seek guidance from a health care professional before purchasing weight loss products.

The health risks posed by these products can be very serious and include high blood pressure, seizures, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), palpitations, heart attack, and stroke. Sibutramine, a controlled substance, was found in many of these products at levels much higher than the maximum daily dosage for Meridia, the only FDA-approved drug product containing sibutramine. These higher levels of sibutramine can increase the incidence and severity of these health risks. Fenproporex, another controlled substance, can cause arrhythmia and possible sudden death.

Health care professionals and consumers should report serious adverse events (side effects) or product quality problems to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program either online, by regular mail, fax or phone.

Online: www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm
Regular Mail: use postage-paid FDA form 3500 available at: www.fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm and mail to MedWatch, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787
Fax: 800- FDA-0178

Nutritional Supplements For Fibromyalgia

Last summer I was chatting with Jana about how she was living with fibromyalgia daily. The fibromyalgia pain was so bad Jana wasn't able to get out the way she wanted and needed to.

She was already watching the food she ate and tried to eat right. She decided to test this new whole food multivitamin just to see if she felt any different.

Here's her question from July Pops tester group to the Pops tester board:

"Since I have been taking the Pops I have had a huge decrease in muscular pain with my fibromyalgia.

Would this be due to the increase in nutrition?

Will our muscles respond negatively to lack of proper nutrition?

Also, what kind of additional nutritional helps do we need in addition to the Pops? -
Thanks- Jana Zaloum

Dr. Heidi's response:

"Yes, our bodies - including our muscles - respond well to good nutrition, using it to heal."

"The Pops have a number of ingredients that could take the credit for the decrease in your muscle pain."

1. The 7 metabolic enhancers in the Purples help your body better absorb the nutrients in the food you eat, as well as the nutrients in the Pops themselves. So, even if you did not make any changes in your diet, you are probably extracting more out of what you eat than you did before, including the minerals magnesium and manganese that improve energy production in muscle cells, relieving fibromyalgia pain.

"The metabolic enhancers also increase the body's energy production. This causes the muscle cells to expand rather than contract, easing the pain."

2. "A wide spectrum of antioxidants are contained in a number of Pops ingredients, including camu-camu (Vitamin C), dunaliella (beta carotene/ Vitamin A), extracts of green tea, grape seed, turmeric, alpha lipoic acid, not to mention all the berries and other fruits. Antioxidants support immune function, which causes the body to relax instead of struggle."

3. "The probiotics (with the prebiotics) in the Pops reduce yeast overgrowth which seems to be common in people with Fibromyalgia. Yeast overgrowth weakens the immune system, places additional stress on the body, which in turn causes the muscles to contract, causing pain."

4. "The protease enzymes improve absorption of protein which is neededfor tissue repair. They also reduce inflammation."

Note: Regarding nutritional help in addition to the Pops, that would depend on your biochemical profile. Do you have a nutritionist who could give you some guidance?

"Delighted that the Pops have helped you." - Best regards, Dr. Heidi.

P.S. Jana Z became a Pops subscriber and we're delighted to have her.

First Lady Michelle Obama Growing an Organic Garden

Michelle Obama's simple move to plant an organic garden on the White House grounds sends a powerful message to all Americans. If conventional grown produce isn't good enough for President's family should any Americans be eating it?

I think First Lady Michelle Obama will help everyone understand how easy it really is to eat right, starting with organic foods. One of her goals is to promote healthy eating for American families.

With more people seeking organic real food, my hope is that the price for organic food will come down and the price of junk processed food will go up! That would be the perfect fix for helping families eat right and more savings would be passed on in reduced health care needs.

Michelle says her whole family will be getting involved, and even President Barack Obama will help with weeding.

Mrs. Obama hopes that inspiring children will help spread the healthy eating message to others.

"My hope is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities," she said in an interview in her East Wing office.

I know this worked for my son. Last year I started researching real food, the organic produce, grass-fed beef, pastured eggs and chicken and healthy oils. My son became interested in the books I read, videos I watched and talking with local farmers. He wanted to know why grass-fed beef was better for us than feedlot beef. He was disgusted by the way animals are mistreated in feedlots and the way our produce is sprayed with chemicals.

My young son is spreading the word about organic food, raising animals for food humanely and why toxins are bad for our health. He tells his friends and other family members what we eat now and why. I'm proud of my 10-year-old son making a difference - Children are the future so we must teach them about real food and make organic real food easily available.

Organic produce the Obamas will grow
Among the 55 varieties of vegetables the Obamas are planning to cultivate are spinach, chard, collards and black kale.

The more exotic plants in the new garden will be arugula, cilantro, tomatilloes, hot peppers and anise hyssop herbs.

Several varieties of lettuces including red romaine, green oak leaf, butterhead, red leaf and galactic will be planted.

The selection was put together by the White House chefs who will use the the produce to feed the Obama family and for official events. Full story BBC NEWS

Food Prices and Weight Problems

Finally someone is looking at ways to get people to eat real food. So many family's can't afford to eat all organic or grass-fed beef, or the best natural foods. It's been said over and over that buying real food isn't that much more than the normal food Americans buy. Wrong, you will pay more now for 100% real food. For most people it depends on WHY you want to eat real food to see if it is worth the extra expense.

Real food prices are seasonal. Summer is the best and cheapest time to buy produce, pastured eggs and grass-fed pastured meats.

ScienceDaily story: Raising the prices of less healthy foods (e.g., fast foods and sugary products) and lowering the prices of healthier foods (e.g., fruits and vegetables) are associated with lower body weight and lesser likelihood of obesity. Children and adolescents, the poor, and those already at a higher weight are most responsive to these changes in prices.

Small taxes on unhealthy food items or small subsidies for healthy foods are not likely to produce substantial changes in BMI or obesity prevalence while nontrivial pricing interventions may have a measurable effect on Americans’ weight outcomes.

“This review provides evidence about the potential effectiveness of using food pricing policies to affect weight outcomes, including the potential impact of excise and other taxes on less healthy products and of subsidies for more healthy products,” the authors conclude.

This is the first comprehensive review of evidence on the effects of food prices on weight outcomes. Lisa Powell and Frank J. Chaloupka of the University of Illinois at Chicago assessed research published between 1990 and 2008 that involved weight and BMI in combination with pricing and taxes.

Facts About Vitamins

The facts about vitamins are out. If you take vitamins and minerals to help with nutritional mistakes make sure you use all natural multi vitamins and minerals for safe vitamins, Read on...

How do you feel when taking a vitamin supplement?

Do you sleep restfully and wake refreshed?
Do you have energy to chase after the kids or make love with your partner after a day at work? Do you have regular bowel movements?
Do you feel happy and motivated every day?
Are you rarely sick with colds or stomach problems?

If you answered no to any of these you might be taking synthetic vitamins.

Answer yes to the following questions and it could be the vitamin.

Do you toss and turn when you should be sleeping?
Are you drained of energy most days?
Do you have dark yellow, strong smelling urine?
Are you constipated or have bouts of diarrhea?
Do you suffer memory loss, fatigue, depression or insomnia?

The New York Times story headline reads, Vitamins Pills, A False Hope?

Today about half of all adults use some form of dietary supplement, at a cost of $23 billion a year.

But are vitamins worth it? In the past few years, several high-quality studies have failed to show that extra vitamins, at least in pill form, help prevent chronic disease or prolong life.

The most recent news came after researchers in the Women’s Health Initiative study tracked eight years of multivitamin use among more than 161,000 older women.

Despite earlier findings suggesting that multivitamins might lower the risk for heart disease and certain cancers, the study, published in The Archives of Internal Medicine, found no such benefit.

Last year, a study that tracked almost 15,000 male physicians for a decade reported no differences in...

Interesting note. The piece comments:
"Everyone needs vitamins, which are essential nutrients that the body can’t produce on its own.

Inadequate vitamin C leads to scurvy, for instance, and a lack of vitamin D can cause rickets."

But says one researcher, “Why are we taking a reductionist approach and plucking out one or two chemicals given in isolation?”Resource

This has been Dr. Heidi's song for 10 years.

Synthetic, or isolated nutrients are not as effective as the whole food based multis, which are more able to be used by the body. Because they come in a more recognized, i.e. not "foreign" form. That's why she designed the Pops (the whole food multi WFN offers) and that's one reason the Pops won the Vitamin of 2008 award form Kitchen Table Medicine.

Vitamin D Deficient - 1 in 7 US Teens

One in seven American adolescents is vitamin D deficient, according to a new study by researchers in the Department of Public Health at Weill Cornell Medical College.
In children, vitamin D deficiency can interfere with bone mineralization, leading to rickets. In adults, it is linked to cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, immune dysfunction and hypertension.
Using newer criteria, the study finds more than half of African-American teens are vitamin D deficient. Girls had more than twice the risk of deficiency compared with boys. And overweight teens had nearly double the risk of their normal-weight counterparts.

"These are alarming findings. We need to do a better job of educating the public on the importance of vitamin D, and the best ways to get it. To meet minimum nutritional requirements teens would need to consume at least four glasses of fortified milk daily or its dietary equivalent.
Other foods rich in vitamin D include salmon, tuna, pastured eggs and fortified cereals.

Of the specific findings, the authors were particularly concerned about the role of weight in deficiency. "Because vitamin D is stored in body fat, simply increasing the dosage of vitamin D may not be effective in overweight adolescents," notes senior author Dr. Linda M. Gerber, professor of public health in the Division of Biostatistics and Epidemiology and professor of epidemiology in medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. "As the prevalence of childhood obesity increases, vitamin D deficiency may increase as well. In this group, appropriate nutrition could solve both problems." Source ScienceDaily

I need to lose weight quickly without exercise

I've come to realize the more we talk about food to avoid to lose weight, the more weight we will pack on. We have to find foods to eat to lose weight also.

Here's the standard approach with most diets.

Start with two things:

1. Restrict (count) your calories.

2. Exercise an hour a day.

But this, argues Dr. Heidi, is doing it backwards.

If your body isn't burning fat like it should, with its own fat burning furnace, you need to first get your body healthy enough - with a nutritional eating program - to start burning fat again.

Once you have your body working on the inside, THEN do some exercise.

Plus when your body is healthy again, you can more easily become aware of how much of the different foods it takes to satisfy you.
