Milk is "fortified" with vitamin D but we don't drink the fake reduced fat, homogenized milk. We only drink milk from grass fed cows, whole full fat and non-homogenized. Butterfat contains vitamins A and D needed for assimilation of calcium and protein in the water fraction of the milk. Without them protein and calcium are more difficult to utilize and possibly toxic. Since the milk we drink has the full fat it does not have to have the vitamin D added back to it.
We will always drink this "real milk" because of the dangers of consuming homogenized milk and now we found an easy way to get all the vitamin D3 we need.
Dr. Mercola has a spray vitamin D3 supplement. Use 3 sprays twice a day under your tongue for 6000 IU or 1500% of vitamin D3. It's easy and the spray tastes like spearmint. Our 11-year-old son loves it. I like not having to swallow another pill. I'm not good with pills so anytime I can get the benefit without a pill I'm game to try it!

Eggs from chickens raised on pastures also gives a source of vitamin D. See here for more about that but my family still needs help during the winter when chickens can't be pastured in the frozen tundra.
