Grass Fed Beef Resources

I only buy beef that is 100% grass fed. I know the price seems a bit higher but with the health benefits of grass-fed meats I feel it adds a great health value so the cost is lower.

I hope the info I've gathered here helps you to learn about benefits of grass fed meats and how to buy it.

Feeding grain to cattle has got to be one of the dumbest ideas in the history of western civilization. The Food Revolution

Author and small-scale cattleman Michael Pollan wrote recently in the New York Times about what happens to cows when they are taken off of pastures and put into feedlots and fed grain:
"Perhaps the most serious thing that can go wrong with a ruminant on corn is feedlot bloat. The rumen is always producing copious amounts of gas, which is normally expelled by belching during rumination. But when the diet contains too much starch and too little roughage, rumination all but stops, and a layer of foamy slime that can trap gas forms in the rumen. The rumen inflates like a balloon, pressing against the animal's lungs. Unless action is promptly taken to relieve the pressure (usually by forcing a hose down the animal's esophagus), the cow suffocates.

A corn diet can also give a cow acidosis. Unlike that in our own highly acidic stomachs, the normal pH of a rumen is neutral. Corn makes it unnaturally acidic, however, causing a kind of bovine heartburn, which in some cases can kill the animal but usually just makes it sick. Acidotic animals go off their feed, pant and salivate excessively, paw at their bellies and eat dirt. The condition can lead to diarrhea, ulcers, bloat, liver disease and a general weakening of the immune system that leaves the animal vulnerable to everything from pneumonia to feedlot polio." Ever since Jo Robinson wrote Why Grass Fed is Best! in 2000, we’ve known there were many sound reasons to choose grass-fed beef instead of the far more common corn-fed beef found in most stores and restaurants.

Beef from animals raised entirely on their natural diet of grass has much less fat, which is good for our hearts and our waistlines. It’s also better for the environment than crowding cattle onto feedlots, which causes serious problems with air and water quality. Unfortunately, what we’re suddenly becoming more attuned to is another point Robinson makes about feeding cattle corn: This unnatural grain-based diet is producing toxic E. coli bacteria. Most all health food stores, like Whole Foods™, sell beef from cattle that are fed grains. It may be true that the animals are given grains that are organic.

However, organic grain fed beef is only marginally better than commercial grocery store beef where the grains the animals are fed are not organic.

So don't pay twice as much for organic grain fed beef and continue to get inferior quality.

The best way to purchase grass fed beef is to find a local rancher who is raising grass fed cattle and then purchase the meat from him. This will save you the shipping.

Unfortunately, most of us city dwellers do not have easy access or even know ranchers who are raising grass fed cattle.

Now, Oct, 2009 Michael Pollan about Grass-fed meat;

What if half of your health care costs (better yet, health problems) could be eliminated by doing one thing differently than you do now?

Michael Pollan said it today...

EAT GRASS-FED meats

Anyway, here's the scoop:
"Michael Pollan was on Martha Stewart today, talking about the 'rapidly growing trend towards GRASS-FED meats.' He is talking about conversations we can have with kids, as well politicians. Pollan estimates that 50% of human health care costs would be eliminated with grass-fed meats..."
That was posted today by one of Dr. Heidi's ER Fat Burn Certification students.

Grass-fed is one of FIVE eating strategies in Dr. Heidi's ER Fat Burn program...

Keep learning about grass fed meats and think about the meat your great grandparents ate. It was from animals raised on pasture not GMO grains and corn, or "organic grains."
