8 Drugs Doctors Say They Would Not Take

I just read about these 8 drugs that doctors wouldn't take. Hmm, should we be taking them? Anyway, here's what Men's Health learned:

Doctors count on the Physicians' Desk Reference to help them make smart prescribing decisions. Unfortunately, it seems some doctors rarely pull the PDR off the shelf. Or if they do crack it open, they don't stay versed on emerging research that may suddenly make a once-trusted treatment one to avoid. Worst case: You swallow something that has no business being inside your body.

Of course, plenty of M.D.'s do know which prescription and over-the-counter drugs are duds, dangers, or both. So Men's Health asked them, "Which medications would you skip?" Their list is your second opinion. If you're on any of these meds, talk to your doctor. Maybe he or she will finally open that big red book with all the dust on it.

Advair
It's asthma medicine . . . that could make your asthma deadly. Advair contains the long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) salmeterol. A 2006 analysis of 19 trials, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that regular use of LABAs can increase the severity of an asthma attack. Because salmeterol is more widely prescribed than other LABAs, the danger is greater -- the researchers estimate that salmeterol may contribute to as many as 5,000 asthma-related deaths in the United States each year. In 2006, similarly disturbing findings from an earlier salmeterol study prompted the FDA to tag Advair with a "black box" warning -- the agency's highest caution level.

Avandia
Diabetes is destructive enough on its own, but if you try to control it with rosiglitazone -- better known by the brand name Avandia -- you could be headed for a heart attack. Last September, a Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) study found that people who took rosiglitazone for at least a year increased their risk of heart failure or a heart attack by 109 percent and 42 percent, respectively, compared with those who took other oral diabetes medications or a placebo.

The reason? While there have been some reports that Avandia use may cause dangerous fluid retention or raise artery-clogging LDL cholesterol, no one is sure if these are the culprits. That's because the results of similar large studies have been mixed. So the FDA has asked GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Avandia, to conduct a new long-term study assessing users' heart risks. There's only one problem: The study isn't expected to start until later this year.

Celebrex
Once nicknamed "super aspirin," Celebrex is now better known for its side effects than for its pain-relieving prowess. The drug has been linked to increased risks of stomach bleeding, kidney trouble, and liver damage. But according to a 2005 New England Journal of Medicine study, the biggest threat is to your heart: People taking 200 mg of Celebrex twice a day more than doubled their risk of dying of cardiovascular disease. Those on 400 mg twice a day more than tripled their risk, compared with people taking a placebo.

And yet Celebrex, a COX-2 inhibitor, is still available, even though two other drugs of that class, Bextra and Vioxx, were pulled off the market due to a similar risk of heart damage. The caveat to the consumer? In 2004, the FDA advised doctors to consider alternatives to Celebrex.

Ketek
This antibiotic, which has traditionally been prescribed for respiratory-tract infections, carries a higher risk of severe liver side effects than similar antibiotics do. "Ketek can cause heart-rhythm problems, can lead to liver disease, and could interact poorly with other medications you may be taking," says Dr. Rodgers. "Unfortunately, it's still available, and although many doctors are aware of the risks, some may still prescribe it without caution." In February 2007, the FDA limited the usage of Ketek to the treatment of pneumonia.

Prilosec and Nexium
Heartburn can be uncomfortable, but heart attacks can be fatal, which is why the FDA has investigated a suspected link between cardiac trouble and the acid-reflux remedies Prilosec and Nexium. In December 2007, the agency concluded that there was no "likely" connection. Translation: The scientific jury is still out. In the meantime, there are other reasons to be concerned. Because Prilosec and Nexium are proton-pump inhibitors, they are both incredibly effective at stopping acid production in the stomach -- perhaps too effective.

A lack of acid may raise your risk of pneumonia, because the same stuff that makes your chest feel as if it's burning also kills incoming bacteria and viruses. You may also have an elevated risk of bone loss -- in the less acidic environment, certain forms of calcium may not be absorbed effectively during digestion. "The risk of a fracture has been estimated to be over 40 percent higher in patients who use these drugs long-term, and the risk clearly increases with duration of therapy," says Dr. Rodgers.

Visine Original
"Visine gets the red out, but it does so by shrinking blood vessels, just like Afrin shrinks the vessels in your nose," says Thomas Steinemann, M.D., a spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Overuse of the active ingredient tetrahydrozoline can perpetuate the vessel dilating-and-constricting cycle and may cause even more redness.

Pseudoephedrine
Forget that this decongestant can be turned into methamphetamine. People with heart disease or hypertension should watch out for any legitimate drug that contains pseudoephedrine. See, pseudoephedrine doesn't just constrict the blood vessels in your nose and sinuses; it can also raise blood pressure and heart rate, setting the stage for vascular catastrophe. Over the years, pseudoephedrine has been linked to heart attacks and strokes. "Pseudoephedrine can also worsen symptoms of benign prostate disease and glaucoma," says Dr. Rodgers.

So there you have it, Men's Health report on the 8 drugs doctors stay clear of.

Fruits and Nuts Boosts Estrogen

Eating foods rich in the mineral boron can boost estrogen levels in postmenopausal women to a stunning degree - as much as taking estrogen replacement therapy does, according to studies by U.S. Department of Agriculture researcher Dr. Forrest Nielsen. Boron seems to work, he says, by boosting steroid hormones in the blood. He documented that in women getting adequate amounts of boron, the most active form of estrogen - estradiol 17B - doubled, reaching levels found in women on estrogen replacement.

The diet of the average American contains about half the boron found effective in the studies.

High levels of boron are found in fruit, especially apples, pears, grapes, dates, raisins and peaches; in legumes, especially soybeans; in nuts, including almonds, peanuts and hazelnuts; and in honey.

You could get the dosed used in the study by eating a couple of apples a day and three and a half ounces of peanuts.

10 Best & Worst (Shocking) Foods For Health

Here's a short list of best and worst foods for health. I'm sure at least one of the worst will shock you and I hope the best foods will work their way into your diet. We can't stop all food that we know is bad for health but we can make better choices with better information. Have fun reading this list.

Let's start with the good foods for health.

1- Sweet Potatoes. - A nutritional All-Star -- one of the best vegetables you can eat. They're loaded with carotenoids, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. Bake and then mix in some unsweetened applesauce or crushed pineapple for extra moisture and sweetness.

2- Grape Tomatoes. - They’re sweeter and firmer than other tomatoes, and their bite-size shape makes them perfect for snacking, dipping, or salads. They’re packed with vitamin C and vitamin A, and you also get some fiber, some phytochemicals, and (finally) some flavor.

3- Fat-free (Skim) or 1% Milk (but not 2%). Excellent source of calcium, vitamins, and protein with little or no artery clogging fat and cholesterol. Ditto for low-fat yogurt. Soy milk can have just as many nutrients – if the company adds them.

4 -Broccoli. Lots of vitamin C, carotenoids, and folic acid. Steam it briefly and add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes and a dash of soy sauce.

5- Wild Salmon. The omega-3 fats in fatty fish like wild salmon can help reduce the risk of sudden-death heart attacks. And salmon that is caught wild has fewer PCB contaminants than farmed salmon.

6 -Crispbreads. - Whole-grain rye crackers, like Wasa, Ry Krisp, and Ryvita – usually called crispbreads – are loaded with fiber and often fat-free.

7- Microwaveable or “10-minute” Brown Rice. Enriched white rice is nutritionally weak. You lose the fiber, magnesium, vitamins E and B-6, copper, zinc, and phytochemicals that are in the whole grain. Try quick cooking or regular brown rice instead.

8 - Citrus Fruits. Great-tasting and rich in vitamin C, folic acid, and fiber. Perfect for a snack or dessert. Try different varieties: juicy Minneola oranges, snacksize Clementines, or tart grapefruit.

9 - Diced Butternut Squash. A growing number of food stores sell peeled, seeded, cut, and ready to go – into the oven, into a stir-fry, or into a soup or risotto, that is – bags of diced butternut squash. Every half cup has 5 grams of fiber and payloads of vitamins A and C.

10 - Spinach and Kale. Loaded with vitamin C, carotenoids, calcium and fiber.

Now the worst foods for health.

1 - Artery Crust.
Judging by the label, Pepperidge Farm Roasted White Meat Chicken Premium Pot Pie has 510 calories and 9 grams of saturated fat. But look again. Those numbers are for half a pie. Eat the entire pie, as most people probably do, and you’re talking more than 1,000 calories and 18 grams of sat fat.

2 - Strip Tease.
McDonald’s Chicken Selects Premium Breast Strips sounds healthy. A standard, fivestrip order has 630 calories and 11 grams of artery-clogging fat. That’s about the same as a Big Mac, except the burger has 1,040 mg of sodium, while the Selects hit 1,550 mg, even without the salty sauce.

3 - Factory Reject.
Each slice of The Cheesecake Factory’s 6 Carb Cheesecake has 610 calories – that’s the same as you’d get from a slice of its Original Cheesecake. Think of it as an 8-ounce prime rib for dessert – with 29 grams of saturated fat, a 1 1/2 days’ supply.

4 - Everlasting Dove.
Dove squeezes some 300 calories and an average of 11 grams of saturated fat (half-aday’s worth) into a tennis-ball size serving (half a cup) of its Dove Ice Cream. That puts it in the same ballpark as Ben & Jerry’s and Häagen-Dazs.

5 - Starbucks on Steroids.
The Starbucks Venti (20 oz.) Caffè Mocha with whipped cream is more than a mere cup of coffee. Think of it as a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in a cup. Few people have room in their diets for the 490 calories and 16 grams of bad fat that this hefty beverage supplies. But you can lose all the bad fat and all but 170 calories if you order a tall (12 oz.) with nonfat milk and no whipped cream.

6 - Angioplasta.
“Fresh, pulled white meat chicken, fresh steamed broccoli and penne pasta, tossed in parmesan cream sauce. Topped with Wisconsin cheddar cheese, then baked,” says Ruby Tuesday’s menu entry for its Fresh Chicken & Broccoli Pasta. Some patrons may know that the cheese and cream add saturated fat, but how much harm could they do? Enough to turn the dish into a 2,060-calorie megameal with 128 grams of fat. Since the fat is mostly dairy, roughly 60 to 70 of those fat grams are probably saturated.

7 - Stack Attack.
Unless you’re suicidal, why on earth would you want to wolf down a Burger King Quad Stacker – 4 hamburger patties, 4 slices of cheese, 8 strips of bacon, plus sauce and a bun? That’s half-a-day’s calories (1,000), one-and-a-half-days’ worth of saturated fat (30 grams), 3 grams of trans fat, and more than a day’s sodium (1,800 mg). Urp!

8 - Salt’s On!
Campbell's Chunky, Select, and red-and-white-label condensed soups are brimming with salt: Half a can averages more than half of a person’s daily quota of salt. Instead, try brands like Healthy Choice and Campbell’s Healthy Request, which have about half as much sodium.

9 - Tortilla Terror.
Interested in a Chipotle Chicken Burrito (tortilla, rice, pinto beans, cheese, chicken, sour cream, and salsa)? Think of its 1,180 calories and 19 grams of saturated fat as three 6-inch Subway Steak and Cheese Subs. Plus, it has 2,900 mg of sodium! Getting the burrito with no cheese or sour cream cuts the saturated fat by two-thirds, but you still end up with 950 calories and 2,690 mg of sodium. Yikes!

10 -Razzle, Dazzle ‘em.
A Mint Chip Dazzler at Häagen-Dazs stores (three scoops of ice cream, hot fudge, Oreos, chocolate sprinkles, and whipped cream) has 1,270 calories and 38 grams of saturated fat — that’s two days’ worth. Think of it as a T-bone steak with Caesar salad, and baked potato with sour cream. But that’s for dinner — yet many people have a Dazzler as a dessert after lunch or dinner!

Pregnant Women to Benefit From Better Information on Drug Labels

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken action to give women and their health care professionals better information about the effects of medicines when used by a woman who is pregnant or breastfeeding.

The action is a proposed rule, published May 29, 2008, that would require major changes to the sections of prescription drug labeling (the prescribing information) concerning pregnancy and lactation (secretion of breast milk).

Why FDA is Taking Action
FDA wants women and their health care professionals to have the most useful and up-to-date information about the benefits and risks of medications when used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

"With this proposal, FDA's goal is to help women, their physicians, and their pharmacists have better information about the effects of prescription medicines so that pregnant women, nursing mothers, and breastfeeding infants will benefit," says Rear Adm. Sandra Kweder, M.D., Deputy Director of FDA's Office of New Drugs.

Women and health care professionals need to be armed with available information on the effects of drugs when used in pregnancy because:

* women take an average of three to five drugs during pregnancy
* many pregnant women have medical conditions, such as asthma, high blood pressure, depression, or diabetes, that require them to continue taking drugs they were on before pregnancy
* new medical problems may begin or old ones may get worse during pregnancy, requiring drug treatment.
* a woman's body changes throughout the term of her pregnancy, which can affect the dose she needs of a particular drug.
* a woman will often need and take medications while she is breastfeeding, potentially exposing her child to the effects of these medications
* about half of the six million pregnancies in the United States each year are unplanned, exposing women to drugs before they know they are pregnant; improved labeling will help with assessing the risks of unintended drug exposure to the developing baby.

Labeling Background
The current standard for information on pregnancy and lactation in drug labeling dates back to 1979. It categorizes the risks of taking a drug during pregnancy under a five-letter system. Over the decades, medical experts have criticized the category system as confusing, overly simplistic, and not reflective of newer studies and medical knowledge.

Look of the New Labeling
Under the proposed rule, the current drug labeling format and category system would be replaced with a new format that gives more detailed information in the pregnancy and lactation sections. The new labeling will provide better information about a drug's risks to the expectant mother, the developing baby, and the breastfed infant. The labeling will also discuss the data about these risks, including information from pregnancy exposure registries.

Current labeling, which assigns different letters based on risk, is not well-understood.

For example, the letter A indicates human studies suggest there was no risk to pregnant women or to the fetus with this drug. Folic acid and levothyroxine have a letter A on their labels.

The letter B, which can be found on amoxicillin, ondansetron (Zofran), and some insulins, indicates that there are no good human studies but animal studies found no evidence of risk in pregnant women.

The letter C -- no good clinical studies, but some evidence of potential harm from animal studies -- is used on labels of some antidepressants (sertraline [Zoloft] and fluoxetine [Prozac]) and asthma medications such as albuterol.

The letter D indicates there are some data from clinical trials that indicate a risk to the fetus (paroxetine [Paxil], phenytoin [Dilantin]).

Finally, X is used for drugs such as isotretinoin (Accutane) that have been found to be teratrogenic in clinical trials.

When it does away with the letters, the FDA will replace the letters with text warnings.

Risks associated with use during pregnancy and lactation will be detailed in three parts:

The first section, called the fetal risk summary, would describe what is known about the effects of the drug on the fetus, and if there is a risk, whether this risk is based on information from animals or humans. The proposal calls for a risk conclusion based on the available data and provides a number of examples depending on the quality and quantity of that data. For example, one risk conclusion might be: "Human data indicate that (name of drug) increases the risk of cardiac abnormalities." This would be followed by a summary of the most important data on the drug's effects.
Another section, called clinical considerations, would include information about the effects of the use of the drug if it is taken before a woman knows she is pregnant. This section also would feature discussions about the risks of the disease to the mother and the baby, dosing information, and tell how to address complications.
The third section, under the heading of data, would describe in more detail the available data regarding use of the drug in humans and from animal studies that were used to develop the fetal risk summary.

Poor Eating Habits Cause Malnourished - Obese - Sick Americans.

Right now, many Americans are starving themselves of their health:
Studies show that junk food, sugary drinks, and beer make up nearly one-third of the calories adult Americans consume daily!

By comparison, healthier foods, such as fruits and vegetables, make up only 10 percent of our caloric intake.

Because of poor eating habits, two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, and many more are simply malnourished.

You’ve heard the phrase “You are what you eat.” Well, it’s not far from the truth. Your body and its ability to function properly depend on the nutrients that you get from your food. In many ways, your body is like a car. Food is your fuel. And you need the right kind of fuel – and enough of it – to avoid breaking down.

What are the consequences of poor diet for children?
Unhealthy eating habits during childhood can interfere with optimal growth and development while setting the stage for poor eating habits during adolescence and adulthood.
* Poor diet can predispose to a number of serious illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease and some cancers, and lead to a poorer quality of life.
* Increases in other nutrition-related risk factors for chronic disease in children such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and type 2 diabetes have also been found.
*Poor diet has also been linked to low academic performance, classroom behaviour problems and low self-esteem among school-age children.
*Chronic diseases are among the most common and expensive health problems, and also are some of the most preventable. They can affect people of all ages and are a major contributor to the disease burden in the United States.
*Overweight, obesity, and family history are risk factors that can contribute to a chronic disease diagnosis.

However, major chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, asthma, arthritis, and diabetes can be caused by unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, lack of physical activity, poor eating habits, and not getting preventive screenings.

Scary Health Statistics from Today's Chiropractic

The following statistics are a representative sample of some of the most frequently occurring and debilitating conditions and chronic diseases plaguing America today that are inextricably linked to diet and lifestyle.

Sixty-four percent of the people in America are overweight—the highest percentage of any country in the world.
Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in America.
Cardiovascular diseases account for more than 40 percent of all deaths in the United States.
One out of every 2.5 people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime—that’s almost half the population.
More than 90 million Americans live with chronic illnesses.
Poor nutrition and lack of physical exercise are associated with 300,000 deaths each year.

The Standard American Diet:
In America between 1980-1997, the average per capita consumption of major food commodities per person, per year included:

111 lbs. red meat
580 lbs. dairy products
29 lbs. ice cream
53 gallons soft drinks
66 lbs. fats and oils
39 gallons alcohol
150 lbs. wheat
24 gallons coffee
154 lbs. sugar

Child's Brain Tumor Gone After Alternative Treatments

When 7-year-old Ella Hope Hauschildt's parents were told their daughter had a brain tumor they asked what could be done. They didn't accept the answer which was, "after radiation the little girl would be kept comfortable." They decided to go to Arizona for alternative therapy. This was a natural treatment using vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Good for little Ella Hope's parents for being open to natural treatments, good for Ella Hope - now her tumor is gone.

Alternative Medicine Attributed to Curing Child's Brain Tumor
Ella Hope Hauschildt was diagnosed with a brain tumor a month before she turned seven, but after natural remedies, the latest MRI was not able to detect the tumor anymore. Her family believes it was the natural treatment that helped Ella.

A month before turning 7, Ella found out she had a inoperable grape-sized brain tumor. She went through 30 radiation treatments, but her family wanted to try an alternative therapy. Her parents took her to Arizona for natural therapy.
After 20 IV treatments of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, the tumor was no longer detected in the MRI.

Doctors say it is almost impossible that the tumor won’t return, but Ella’s family still remains hopeful.

Ella’s family has switched to a mostly organic, natural diet. From MyFox Twin Cities

What This Doctor Says About Nutrition And Health

"We live in an era where the majority of Americans think that diseases strike us because of misfortune, genetics, or unknown factors beyond our control.

When serious disease "strikes," we run to doctors and expect them to fix us with a pill.

Most people have no idea that most diseases—including cancers, heart disease, strokes, and diabetes—are the result of nutritional folly and are avoidable with a healthy diet."

90% Of Vitamin C And Most Vitamins A, B12 And E Are Made In China. Are They Safe?

I was surprised to learn that China is one of the largest exporters of many common drugs and vitamins. About 90% of all Vitamin C sold in the US is from China. China also produce 50% of the world's asprin and 35% of acetaminophen (Tylenol) as well as most Vitamins A, B12 and E.

Since the United States does not require country-of-origin labels for any of our drugs, foods or supplements, there is no telling where that vitamin you are taking came from.

Hot on the heels of the poisoned pet food scandal, and reported instances of toxic food and toothpaste, all eyes are now turning toward the Chinese vitamin market. How safe are they?

The industry in China appears to be split between top-notch operations and bottom-of-the-barrel producers. China also suffers from the same conflict of interest that we are seeing here in the United States.

The Seattle Times June 3, 2007

How do you know if the vitamin you take is safe?
Don't take synthetic vitamins, no matter where these are produced they have shown in studies to cause harm in some people. Try a whole food multivitamin. Whole Foods stores and Health Food stores carry these, ask for them or try these from Whole Food Nation.

Supplements can be helpful; however, it's always best to try to get the majority of your vitamins and minerals from the food you eat. You can’t “make up” for a poor diet by simply adding vitamin supplements. Processed foods are sorely lacking in nutrients, but eating plenty of raw organic foods, farmed locally (or as nearby as possible), can supply you with most of the vital nutrients that you need.

How To Get The Most Disease-Fighting Antioxidants

Antioxidants are a way to stop letting the free-radicals bombard our body with disease. It doesn't take a lot of fresh fruits and veggies to make a difference if you choose the best ones and eat them everyday. Of course more is better but don't beat yourself up for at least trying to get on the path for a healthier diet with fruits and veggies. The longer and more you eat them, the easier it becomes because your body will crave the healthy food instead of the junk food.

When you choose fruits and veggies, look for those with color; usually the deeper the color, the more antioxidants. Also, fresh and frozen fruits and veggies have more antioxidants than canned, processed or heated.

Generally you get more antioxidants if you eat:

* Red grapes instead of green or white grapes
* Red and yellow onions instead of white onions
* Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli raw or lightly steamed
* Garlic raw and crushed
* Fresh and frozen veggies instead of canned ones
* Extra virgin cold-processed olive oil
* The deepest, darkest green leafy veggies
* Pink grapefruit instead of white grapefruit
* Whole fruits rather than juices
* Fresh and frozen juices instead of canned ones
* The deepest orange carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkins

This list is a starting place, it just scratches the surface of antioxidant rich foods.

Share your tips for what you eat to maximize the antioxidants in food.

200 Chemicals Found In Newborns. Could Toxins Be A Cause Of Increased Birth Defects, Especially In Pre-Term Babies?

This post addresses three growing concerns; infant birth defects, premature births and chemicals found in newborns. We'll start with the latest report that shows premature babies born in the United States are more than twice as likely to have a major birth defect than full-term infants.

The researchers tracked nearly 7 million babies born between 1995 and 2000 in 13 states, accounting for about 30 percent of U.S. births, to better understand the relationship between birth defects and pre-term birth.

About 8 percent of babies born prematurely had a birth defect, compared to roughly 3 percent for full-term births, according to the researchers. The number jumped to 16percent of the very pre-term babies -- those born between 24 and 31 weeks gestation.

Researchers state that pre-term birth affects about 12 percent of infants born in the United States. And birth defects affect about 3 percent of births in the U.S. And we think it's important to recognize the pretty strong association between these two serious outcomes.

The March of Dimes advocacy group said the percentage of U.S. babies born pre-term has been rising since 1981. Full article on Reuters

I recently wrote this article about birth defects in infants. In 2004 three to five percent of all U.S. babies were born with birth defects according to CDC. That's one in every thirty three baby having a birth defect.

A closer look at the root cause of birth defects reveals the potential for a nutritional or toxic origin as the leading suspects.

Consider the fact that scientists have found newborns contaminated with over 200 chemicals or pollutants through the study of umbilical cord blood randomly selected from hospitals in 2004. The chemicals found in the cord blood included 187 that are known carcinogens, 217 are known neurotoxins and 208 are known to cause birth defects.

I wonder how many Moms-to-be are aware of this study on vitamins:

The New England Journal of Medicine reported in 1995:
22,000 pregnant women were given synthetic Vitamin A. The study was halted because birth defects increased 400%. - New England Journal of Medicine, 1995.

Most prenatal vitamins are made using synthetic ingredients which have shown to cause harm to a developing fetus (above study.) When these synthetic ingredients are taken the growing baby is being exposed to artificial substances before he/she takes the first breath of fresh air.

Along with synthetic ingredients many prenatal vitamins have artificial food coloring: FD&C Yellow #6 Lake. Artificial food and supplement colorings are made of coal tar and petrochemicals. (Artificial food coloring is known to be toxic and detrimental to children, among others.) See here for references .

Is this healthy for mom or baby?

Most doctors suggest pregnant Moms to take a prenatal vitamin - look at what goes into the vitamins. Could this be factor in pre-term births and infant birth defects increase?

The FDA has recommendations for women of child bearing age relative to consuming vitamin A, including dietary supplements.

"The problem comes from pre-formed Vitamin A and synthetic* forms of beta-carotene. (Examples of pre-formed vitamin A include retinyl palmitate and retinyl acetate)

On the other hand, beta-carotene is a substance found naturally in plants, and it can be converted to vitamin A in the body. It is considerably less toxic than the pre-formed vitamin A.

The vitamin A in fruits and vegetables is naturally in the form of beta-carotene, and high intakes of vitamin A from these sources is generally not of concern." *Vitamins with beta-carotene listed without the food source is lab/man created synthetic Vitamin A.

If you are concerned about your prenatal multi vitamin and the health of you and your unborn child read this article about safety of prenatal vitamins for helpful information. Also get this free report Are Your Vitamins Safe? to compare vitamin ingredients. If your vitamin is synthetic or has food coloring added and this matters to you, find something safer - look for a whole food multivitamin. Teflon Is Found In 95% Of American Men, Women & Children

I first wrote about the danger to pet birds when cooking with Teflon, non-stick pans around them. Now I've learned Teflon and other non-stick surfaces are found in the packaging of these household – common items:
• Candy bars
• Microwave popcorn
• Fast food packages like French fries and pizza boxes
• Bakery goods
• Drinks
• Paper plates
• Stain resistant products such as carpet cleaners.

Wow, another reason to try to avoid French fries, candy bars, pizza and microwave popcorn. Most of the food – like products that are in direct contact with non-stick coating like those mentioned above are not healthy for us to eat. So now might be the time to avoid these products where Teflon is commonly used.

Actually it's Perflurooctanoic Acid (PFOA) that is used in the production of Teflon and other non-stick products. Dupont has stated that PFOA is only used in the manufacturing process and should not be found in the finished products. Wrong, the chemical has been found in 95% of American men, women and children. It seems no one is certain how the chemical has made it into the bloodstream of these 95% of American men, women and children if it's not located in the finished product.

Some research has implicated exposure to PFOA to increased instances of cancer in the pancreas, liver, testicles, and mammary glands. Also increased were instances of miscarriage, weight loss, thyroid problems, weaker immune systems, and low organ weights.

The EPA has urged DuPont to eliminate this toxin from their manufacturing process but even as late as mid 2007, the elimination of PFOA has been strictly voluntary. DuPont claims to have already reduced PFOA emissions from manufacturing plants 97% but have never made a commitment to discontinue the use of the chemical altogether.

The EPA has already identified PFOA as a "likely" human carcinogen. DuPont maintains, regardless of the studies or research done, that the substance is not related to any adverse health effects and that all exposure and levels in humans fall within "normal range."

The fundamental question remains: Is any amount of PFOA in the body "normal"?

How To Read Labels On Fruits And Veggies - Yes They Have Labels

We hear daily to read labels on packages of food, pet food cleaning products, vitamins and more, but did you know fruits and vegetables have important labels also? Today the banana might not be just an average banana. If you care about how your food is grown the label tells all.

As much as we may dislike them, the stickers or labels attached to fruit do more than speed up the scanning process at the checkout stand. The PLU code, or price lookup number printed on the sticker, tells you how the fruit was grown.

As reported by Maria Gallagher, in the June 26, 2002 issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer, by reading the PLU code, you can tell if the fruit was genetically modified, organically grown or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or herbicides.

Here's how it works:
For conventionally grown fruit, (grown with chemicals inputs), the PLU code on the sticker consists of four numbers.
Organically grown fruit has a five-numeral PLU prefaced by the number 9.
Genetically engineered* (GM) fruit has a five-numeral PLU prefaced by the number 8.

For example,
A conventionally grown banana would be:
4011
Note: All combinations of the four-digit code beginning with the numeral "4" have been used up, so new labels beginning with the numeral "3" will also be used to designate conventionally raised produce.

An organic banana would be:
94011

A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) banana would be:
84011

The numeric system was developed by the Produce Electronic Identification Board, an affiliate of the Produce Marketing Association, a Newark, Delaware-based trade group for the produce industry. As of October 2001, the board had assigned more than 1,200 PLUs for individual produce items.

Incidentally, the adhesive used to attach the stickers is considered food-grade, but the stickers themselves aren't edible.

*Do you REALLY know what's in your dinner? If you care about how your "food" is grown this might be of interest to you.

Today, 7 out of every 10 items on grocery stores shelves contain ingredients that have been genetically modified. In other words, scientists are using new technology to transfer the genes of one species to another, and these altered foods are in the market stream. And yet many scientists have concerns about the safety -- to people, wildlife and the environment -- of this process. That's why consumers in Asia and Europe are demanding that their food be free of genetically modified ingredients.

Grass-Fed Beef is Better-Fed, Better for You, Better for the Planet

Grass is the natural food for cattle – not grain, which is difficult for cattle to digest and can necessitate the use of antibiotics. The introduction of even a little grain into the cattle's diet diminishes the quality of the beef, reducing both health benefits and the real beef flavor.

Most beef in most supermarkets and butchers comes from gigantic industrialized meat processors, who are more concerned with their bottom line than with raising healthy cattle in humane ways.

They pack cattle into feedlots where the animals are fed grain laced with antibiotics, hormones and steroids so that they grow bigger faster and can withstand the cramped, inhumane environment. Even some so-called "grass-fed" brands can be "finished" on grain to produce rapid weight gain before market.

For the best health of humans and cows the cattle should be born, raised, and finished on a ranch, where they graze rotationally in open pastures on the tips of tall grass. Strangely enough, this sustainable approach is somewhat revolutionary nowadays, but it's the way cattle were raised for centuries and the way they're still raised in places like Argentina, which is known for its exceptional beef.

100% grass-fed beef is more than delicious: It’s a healthy alternative to conventional, grain-fed beef. It’s lower in both fat and calories than conventional beef and is a great option for beef lovers looking for heart-healthy, lower-calorie options. A 6-ounce grass-fed steak from grass-fed beef, for example, has approximately 100 fewer calories than a 6-ounce steak finished on grain.

Grass-fed beef is also higher in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for enhancing heart health, as well as reducing the risk of arthritis, obesity, insulin resistance, allergies and autoimmune diseases. Conversely, grass-fed beef is lower in the Omega-6 fatty acids that may contribute to development of heart disease, cancers and depression.

Cattle that graze only on grass and plants makes beef much higher in beta-carotene, with approximately twice the amount found in grain-fed beef. Beta-carotene is helpful in reducing the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Last but not least, grass-fed beef contains no pesticides, antibiotics or hormones, which have been linked to a host of cancers, developmental issues and immune disorders.

I’m excited to share the news about an online promotion to win a Grass-Fed Cow!

Don't Let Reports About Vitamins Being Harmful Scare You

I've been supplementing with vitamins for years. I never knew there was a difference except in price. Then I read about studies here and here. I was scared and wondered if I really was shortening my life, the way the reports said I could. Then I learned the studies are done using synthetic ingredients. Many people believe the synthetic ingredients are where the possible danger and harm comes from. I learned I have options and can still take a multi vitamin that isn't filled with chemicals.

If you care about this, check your multivitamin bottle -
Pull out your bottle of daily vitamins.
Look at the label and see if you find any of these synthetic ingredients, e.g. Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) ( click here for many more).

In medical studies, patients' use of synthetic Vitamin E, for example, resulted in increased rates of lung cancer, heart attacks and death.

Birth defects increase 400% -
Did you know that in one study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, 22,000 pregnant women were given synthetic supplements, and birth defects increased 400%?

They had to halt the study.

Zoltan P. Rona, M.D., says that while a healthy person will not drop dead immediately after ingesting synthetic supplements, "the long-term consequences of continuous, daily intakes are potentially dangerous." Reactions, he reports, include fatigue, memory loss, depression, insomnia and potential liver disorders.

Dog Food Cause Of Salmonella Outbreak- What's Really In That Dog Chow?

If pet guardians read the labels on pet food and the government makes changes like this one on what can be used in pet food, maybe we will all be healthier. Also read this recent report about Salmonella outbreak related to Dog Food. Scary stuff--Now we have to worry about our human family getting ill from dog food.

Today I want to share information on dog food ingredients so dog lovers can make better choices feeding the four legged family members. I've been an animal lover for over 40 years, especially dogs. What I've learned about healing foods for people started because of the dogs in my life. Cher, one of my sweet little Shelties died of cancer 7 years ago. I did my research and found the food she ate was possibly the cause. A pet's good health starts with the food they eat, just like with people.

These are not things your dog should eat for health.

*Ground Yellow Corn is the entire corn kernel, ground or chopped. Corn is considered to be highly allergenic and difficult for dogs to digest.

*Beef & Bone Meal is the rendered product from beef tissues, including bone, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents, except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices. Beef & bone meal is a by-product made from beef parts, which are not suitable for human consumption. It can incorporate the entire cow, including the bone; although the quality cuts of meat are always removed before beef & bone meal is made.

*Beef Tallow is obtained from the tissue of cattle in the commercial process of rendering. Although this is a very palatable source of fat, it is low in linoleic acid, which is necessary for skin and coat health. It is a low quality fat product.

*Soybean Meal is the product obtained by grinding the flakes, which remain after removal of most of the oil from soybeans by a solvent or mechanical extraction process. Soybean meal is poor quality protein filler. Pet food companies can use the cheaper by-products of human food production, such as soybean meal, to boost protein numbers.

*Animal Digest is a material, which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. Animal digest is a palatability enhancer, which can contain unpredictable parts from animals of unknown origin.

*Animal Fat is obtained from the tissues of mammals and/or poultry in the commercial process of rendering or extracting. Animal fat is a by-product of meat meal processing. The origin of the contributing animals is never known, and the resulting oil is very low in linoleic acid, which is an essential fatty acid that is important for skin and coat health.

*BHA/BHT is short for Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT), both of which are chemical preservatives. BHA and BHT have been banned from human use in many countries because they are potentially cancer-causing agents. In the US, they are still permitted in pet foods.

*Propylene Glycol is a chemical preservative used as a less-toxic version of automotive antifreeze.

Healthy dog food

There's still more questionable things in dog food

*Dried Beet Pulp is the dried residue from sugar beets, which has been cleaned, freed from crowns, leaves, and sand, and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. Dried beet pulp is added to some pet foods to act as a fibrous stool hardener.

*Poultry By-Product Meal consists of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcasses of slaughtered poultry, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines; exclusive of feathers except in such amounts as might occur unavoidably in good processing practices. This is a low-quality, inconsistent ingredient, with multiple organs used, constantly changing proportions, and questionable nutritional value. The origin can be any fowl (turkeys, ducks, geese, buzzards, etc.), instead of a single source, like chicken. Poultry by-product meal is much less expensive and less digestible than chicken meal.

*Brewer's Rice is the small milled fragment of rice kernels that have been separated from the larger kernels of milled rice. Brewer's rice is a lower quality rice product that is missing many of the nutrients found in ground rice and ground brown rice. It is basically a waste product of the alcohol industry.

*Corn Gluten Meal is the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of cornstarch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm. Corn gluten in dog foods is cheap protein filler.

*Meat By-Products consist of organs and parts either not desired, or condemned, for human consumption. This can include bones, blood, intestines, lungs, ligaments, heads, feet, and feathers.

*Corn Syrup, Sugar, and Cane Molasses are sweeteners. They are usually added to lower quality foods to increase their appeal. Dietary sugars can aggravate health problems, including diabetes.

*Vegetable Oil is the product of vegetable origin obtained by extracting the oil from seeds or fruits which are processed for edible purposes. The source vegetables for this oil (and their nutrient properties) are unknown.

Is Your Grocery Cart Full Of Food Or Food - Like Products?

The single most important thing we need to know about nutrition in the modern world is how to recognize the difference between food and food products. I'm not talking about eating only ogranic or grass fed beef. It's simply knowing what is real food verses food like products.

Once we’ve learned to make this distinction, our nutritional decision-making process will rest on a solid foundation. Most of what you find in your local grocery store will be items to make food from, not actual food.

Simply follow this basic rule for healthy shopping and eating:

Choose Food over Food-Like products.

This is Food:
Grown Produced, Messy
Variable Quality
Goes Bad Fast
Required Preparation
Vibrant Colors, Rich Textures
Authentically Flavorful
Strong Connection To Land And Culture

This is a Food-Like Product:
Produced, Manufactured
Neat, Convenient
Always The Same
Keeps Forever
Instant Results
Dull, Bland
Artificially Flavorful
No Connection To Land or Culture

Vitamins From Food Or Synthetics - Which Is Better?

We all know we need to eat fruits and veggies, less processed foods and no junk -- most of our diets are lacking. So millions of people take a multivitamin to fill in the gaps but never feel any different or read reports like this one from March 17, 2008 Vitamins A, C and E are 'a waste of time and may even shorten your life'. It can make you dizzy with confusion. What are we supposed to do?

Two things.
1. Read and understand the ingredients in your multivitamin.
2. Unless directed by a physician don't take isolated vitamins, like vitamin E alone.
* Don't take mega doses, more is not better.

Two things to know about these important studies.
1.These studies are done using synthetic ingredients.
2.The studies were also done using isolated synthetic vitamins.

These isolated synthetic vitamins are not absorbed and utilized properly by the body. That's because - the 'main vitamin' ingredient, (e.g. A, E, C, etc.) which is extracted by synthetic vitamin makers, does not include the chemical cousins and other ingredients that main vitamin comes with in its natural form. Apparently, the body needs these "cofactors" to absorb the main vitamin.

It appears now from these studies that the synthetic vitamins are useless or worse. As you read in your "Are Your Vitamins Safe?" report the study I noted above is only the most recent in a growing number of studies finding that synthetic vitamins (either from a lab beaker or isolated from a plant or animal) are worthless or even risky for a significant number of people.

What to do if you want to take a multivitamin, you know to fill the gaps in a not so perfect diet, for peak performance, or just for insurance?

Use your "Are Your Vitamins Safe?" report. Check the ingredients from your multivitamin against the report. If you see things like, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) instead of Vitamin C (from camu camu fruit) you are taking a synthetic vitamin.
--Other synthetic additives : Glucose, sucrose, starch, microcrystalline cellulose etc. for binding or dissolving ingredients, or for texture and taste.
--Artificial colors, like FD&C Blue #2 Lake, or FD&C Red 40
--Preservatives: sorbates (eg, Polysorbate 80), benzoates (eg, sodium benzoate), nitrites (eg, sodium nitrite), sulphites (eg, sulphur dioxide)
--The most important things in a supplement are the ingredients. More about the cofactors and how ingredients work together.

If you are a regular multivitamin user, a synthetic form, and you never feel any different taking them it's not working for you or worse.

Do your own study, try a whole food multivitamin. Ingredients in a whole food supplement are listed using the names of the actual fruit or vegetable, like “blueberry” or “broccoli”. Many health food stores carry these, ask for them. Or try ours from Whole Food Nation.

Two things to think about when taking a multivitamin.
Don't expect the multivitamins to be the new fountain of youth.
Don't replace eating healthy with a multivitamin.

Know what you are taking, is it from food or made in a lab, then decide which is better for you.

Closing thought, since the recent reports about vitamins causing harm, many supplement makers have picked the studies apart showing what was wrong with the study.
--Some say it was funded by the drug industry so they (drug industry) want the results to be negative.
--Some say the amount of vitamins used were to small or large.
--Some talk about the meta studies being at fault or have a political stance, etc.

The important thing is the fact that the studies are showing synthetic vitamins can cause harm. If the reports continue to show the harm and help get people off synthetic vitamins, I feel it's served a purpose. It's not taking supplements that is dangerous, it's what's in them.

We need more of these studies for the public to learn and then decide what is best.

How Safe Are Prenatal Vitamins For You And Baby?

Why do women who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant take prenatal vitamins? Of course it's to supply their own body with the best vitamins and minerals so the baby is healthy. I recently wrote here how three to five percent of all U.S. babies are born with birth defects according to CDC figures in 2004. That's one in every thirty three baby having a birth defect. Causes may be from nutrient deficiencies to contaminants or a combination thereof. It's understandable how future parents will do everything they can to have a healthy baby. Prenatal vitamins are a big part when trying to conceive and while pregnant.

Some prenatal vitamin labels are printed with things like this:
"Formulated for Pregnant or Lactating Women"
"Quality Assured" and "Laboratory Premium Tested".
The "Laboratory Tested" protects you from fraud about what's in the bottle and in the pills: it means what's inside is what it says is inside. So far so good.

Now the bad news:
"Laboratory tested" on the Vitamin bottle does not protect you from ingredients that have been found to be at best useless and possibly dangerous.

If you read the ingredients on a prenatal vitamin like the one I found below it looks good so mothers take them as protection. Here's the actual ingredients from a popular prenatal vitamin label:
Amount Per 1 Capsule:
Vitamin A(beta-carotene) -- Vitamin C(ascorbic acid) --Vitamin D -- Vitamin E(d-alpha tocopherol) --Vitamin B1(thiamine mononitrate) -- Vitamin B2(riboflavin) --Niacin(niacinamide)-- Vitamin B6(pyridoxine hydrochloride) -- Folic acid(folacin)-- Vitamin B12 cyanocobalamin) -- Biotin -- Pantothenic acid(d-calcium pantothenate)
Iron(ferrous fumarate)-- Iodine(potassium iodide) -- Magnesium(oxide) -- Zinc(gluconate) -- Copper(gluconate) -- FD&C Yellow #6 Lake

Sounds good right?

Here are three things (on this Vitamin ingredient list) I noticed right off:
1. All the vitamins listed (under Supplement Facts) are isolated synthetic vitamins. This is not a good thing.

2. The first ingredient listed in Supplement Facts for these Vitamins is synthetic Vitamin A. This is more bad news. Here's why:

a. The New England Journal of Medicine reported in 1995:
22,000 pregnant women were given synthetic Vitamin A. The study was halted because birth defects increased 400%. - New England Journal of Medicine, 1995.

b. The prestigious Cochrane Library's* massive review of the vitamin literature (published last month) noted that "Vitamins A, C and E are 'a waste of time and may even shorten your life'".
(*Cochrane Library, a publication of the Cochrane Collaboration, a well known international organization which evaluates healthcare research.)

3. This bottle, 'formulated for pregnant or lactating women' includes artificial food coloring: FD&C Yellow #6 Lake. Artificial food and supplement colorings are made of coal tar and petrochemicals.
(Artificial food coloring is known to be toxic and detrimental to children, among others.) See here for references .

Laboratory tested, while a good thing, is not sufficient. It does not mean safe.

To protect yourself and your unborn baby:
On the labels of any vitamins you buy, check for two things:

1) artificial food colorings. Words like Yellow #6 Lake or Blue #2 Lake.

If a company puts that in a VITAMIN for pregnant women, how concerned are they with the woman's health or that of her baby?

2) All or mostly synthetic vitamins, especially vitamin A. Use the list in the free report, Are Your Vitamins Safe?

Buy whole food supplements, Whole Foods store or other health food stores carry these, ask for them or try ours for free.

Not sure about the difference in whole food supplements and synthetic vitamins? This might help.

READ THE LABEL. Just because it's tested and directed at pregnant women (as these were) doesn't mean it's safe. If this matters to you - read labels.

Kim Klaver found the same thing while sifting through the multivitamins sent in for the trade program.

Certain Foods Help Lessen Nicotine Cravings

If you are trying to quit smoking and found some days are much harder than others it could be the food you eat. Some foods may dampen your cravings for the addictive nicotine that keeps you hooked.

Try Oats -
Yes eating oats, as in oatmeal and oat bran, may help you stifle nicotine cravings and kick the cigarette habit. Boiled oats have long been used in India's Ayurvedic system of medicine to treat opium addiction. Then someone noticed that the recovered addicts often lost interest in cigarettes as well. That led researcher C.L. Anand at Ruchill Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, to do a double-blind, placebo-controlled experiment published in the scientific journal, Nature.

He took committed cigarette smokers and gave one group an extract of fresh oats and others a placebo. A month later the oat eaters had diminished cravings for cigarettes and were smoking only one-third as they had before the test or as the non-oat eating controls. In fact, five of the thirteen oat eaters stopped smoking entirely; seven cut back by 50 percent. Only one continued to smoke as before. Further, the craving was suppressed for as long as two months after the smokers stopped eating the oats! A later study in mice identified a compound in the oats thought to be the active anti-smoking ingredient.

If you going to wean off cigarettes there it may help by eating certain foods that increase body alkalinity. The reason this helps; High-alkaline foods tend to "recirculate" nicotine in the body, maintaining high levels of the addictive stuff; so such foods tend to lessen he need for nicotine intake, says David Daughton, Ph.D., a nicotine researcher at the U of Nebraska Medical Center. Other foods that make the urine more acid tend to flush away nicotine, increasing cravings for cigarettes. If you quit cold turkey it probably won't make any difference in what you eat.

Foods that may make weaning off cigarettes easier by increasing body alkalinity:
Spinach
Beet Greens
Raisins
Figs
Dried Lima Beans
Dandelion Greens
Almonds

Foods that may make it harder by increasing body acidity:
Alcohol
Red Meat
Liver
Organ Meat
Wheat Germ
Dried Lentils
Chicken
Eggs
Cheese
Peanuts
English Walnuts
Plums
Prunes
Cranberries
Coffee

Are Personal Care Products Labeled "Green" Really Environmentally-Friendly?

ScienceDaily (May 13, 2008) — From soaps to body lotions to shampoos, consumers are increasingly drawn to personal care products that are labeled "green" or environmentally-friendly, a fast-growing market that chalks-up an estimated $4 billion in sales per year worldwide. Despite the hype over these products, there's growing confusion by consumers and manufacturers alike over what it really means to be labeled as "green," according to an article scheduled for publication in Chemical & Engineering News.

TO READ ALL the marketing hype, it would seem that the personal care products industry is rushing to label as natural, organic, or sustainable just about every new product coming onto the market.

In part, that is because toiletries and cosmetics carrying a "sustainable" or "natural" moniker are flying off the shelves, according to Gillian S. Morris, chemicals and materials director of consulting firm Kline & Co. Worldwide, manufacturers' sales of natural products are growing at an average annual rate of 15%, three times faster than the overall market, she says.

However, just what manufacturers mean when they tout their products as natural, organic, or sustainable is anything but clear, Morris notes. And that has opened up an opportunity for industry groups and certification bodies to offer various seals of approval that ingredient makers and formulators can use to authenticate their claims.

Written by C&EN Senior Correspondent Marc Reisch, the cover story points out that there's no universal consensus over what is green, organic, or sustainable. To the detriment of consumers, manufacturers sometimes produce misleading labels in an effort to cash-in on the hype, the article notes. Some manufacturers have even begun to certify their products as green under a variety of different standards and criteria or using different certifying bodies.

But change may be around the corner. Some groups in the U.S. and abroad are now working on establishing clearer standards for personal care products. Notes Reisch: "Unless ingredient makers and formulators sort out their differences, the subject of what is natural, organic, and sustainable may have to be sorted out in a court of law."

Drinking Diet Pop And A Calcium Poor Diet Equals Osteoporosis

My husband had a bone density test done and was off the chart for high risk. He doesn't drink milk, doesn't like any cheese and basically doesn't get any calcium. He's only 41-years-old and has osteoporosis . He's aging more like a 50-year-old man.

He drinks lots of Diet Pepsi. Soda Pop contains a significant amount of phosphorus, an acid-forming mineral. Research has shown that phosphorus can interfere with the skeleton's ability to absorb calcium. A natural whole foods diet, free of soft drinks, is especially important for teenagers, when 40 to 60 percent of peak bone mass is built. Unfortunately my husband will not give up his Diet Pepsi so he will take calcium supplements and I'll be working calcium rich foods in his diet.

Foods high in calcium:
Ricotta cheese: 1/2 cup = 337 mg
Parmesan cheese: 1 ounce = 336 mg
Milk: 1 cup = 300 mg
Calcium-fortified orange juice: 1 cup = 300 mg
Mackerel with bones: canned: 3 ounces = 263 mg
Yogurt, no fat: 4 ounces = 225 mg
Salmon with bones, canned:3 ounces = 191 mg
Collards, frozen, cooked:1/2 cup = 179 mg
Dried figs: 5 figs = 135 mg
Sardines, with bones: 1 ounce = 130 mg
