Food Allergies Are Common With Autism

If your child is a picky eater this article from The Village Stream shows how it could be more than taste buds. Pam writes from experience with autism , food allergies and picky eaters. Read on to help your picky eater.

Picky picky picky!!!!

In many cases the picky food war is more than just personality, taste buds, or (gulp)mom’s cooking……it is often the sign of food allergies. If your child is in the process of overcoming autism, this is very likely the case.

Early in my daycare career, I had a little girl who had a sudden change in her behavior. Her sleep patterns changed; she became moody, and she had sudden outbursts of anger. Her parents took her to the doctor and the sleep disorder center but had no results. I knew that she was dealing with some form of pain because she would sit down, bend over, and hit her forehead on the floor, or beat on her own leg with hard toys… like blocks. One day as her mom carried her out to the car, she pulled out a handful of hair and handed it to her mom like a bouquet of flowers. Her mom drove straight to the doctor to check for an ear infection but could find nothing wrong; it was so frustrating.

I had a 4yr.old boy in my class at church who had similar behavior; he would get a deep frown, hit the other children randomly, and throw himself in the floor and roll back and forth kicking his legs over and over. I asked this boy why he was kicking like that..his answer was, that he just had to, because his legs hurt. We soon found out, thanks to a P.B.S. that both these children were allergic to milk. The parents who had them tested were so relieved . Had these allergies gone undetected they could have turned into asthma as well.

My youngest son was a picky eater. I could not reason with him when trying to introduce foods. My mother-in -law lived with us for a time. She gave him what he liked to see him smile, and handed him to me when the smile changed to excitable behavior. All the while telling me, that it was my imagination that this behavior existed, for behavior could not be effected by diet. This was not only hard at home, it made going out to eat anywhere almost impossible. Autistic children do not speak quietly in public when told no. Half the people look as if to say “spank that kid and shut him up” and the other half look at you like ” if you do, we’re calling the authorities!” We skipped a few things temporarily as I had to come to the realization that my son was different in how he reacted to life than his brothers, which meant I had to learn new methods in working with him.

My son craved the vitamins we bought him at the grocery store We had to hide them to keep him from going after them like candy. He craved American cheese slices, Star Crunches, and store-bought chocolate milk. He was allergic to all of it. We had to all agree to keep it out of the house, and not to cave in and give it to him while out. He didn’t have the will power, so we loved him enough to have it for him.

According to the Sage Laboratory in Florida, food allergies are always present in children with autism and each situation seems to be with a unique combinations of foods. This Lab has been studying this since the ’70’s. Finding the foods that are toxic to your child is well worth the effort because it will effect their behavior dramatically. If a food can affect a child’s mood, it is hard to say what else it could be doing to the over all health and well being of that same child.

Age Is Just A Number Even At 122 -Years-Old

Jeanne Louise Calment, who died at 122 years and 164 days of age, lived to be the oldest person on record. Though her parents and siblings also lived to an advanced age, she outlived them all.

An active woman, Calment continued to ride a bicycle until she was 100 years old and lived independently until she was nearly 110.

At 114, she became the world's oldest actress, appearing as herself in the family film Vincent and Me.

Calment attributed her longevity to what food product?

Does Being Overweight Affect One's Job hunting?

I don't usually write about weight problems but this headline caught my attention. I have a dear friend who is overweight and has been looking for a job for the past 13 months. I won't forward this to her, for fear it will hurt her feelings and I'm not convinced this is the reason she hasn't found work.

(Natural News) Does being overweight affect job hunting? The answer to the headline question appears to be an unequivocal Yes, obesity does affect job hunting. When it comes to career advancement or job hunting, it often used to be 'not what you know, but who you know'.

According to recent research undertaken by the State University of Detroit and the Society for Industrial Organizational Psychology in San Francisco they suggest a current generational change to weight base bias, suggesting it's now 'how you look', not how good you are!

Findings presented to the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology in San Francisco indicate a major set of stereotypes associated with being overweight that affects other people's opinions and judgments in relation to the obese person's job performance.

An analysis of the considerable research data taken from the last 30 years show that people who are overweight are viewed more negatively in the workplace.

Basic stereotypes associated with being overweight include laziness, sloppiness, untidiness, lack of self-discipline and control. Overweight people are also labeled as being unhealthy, often smelly and lacking in motivation, which can affect any employer's decisions.

Being overweight also limits possible job choices. There are many trades and professions inappropriate to obesity. Good examples being the bias against weight in face to face interaction employment such as sales positions or jobs needing constant mobility.

The fact is that first world peoples, particularly Americans are just getting heavier, causing increasing stigmas associated with body weight. This issue is set to be more of an issue according to Dr Boris Baites, a psychology professor at Wayne State who agrees that employees are victims of stereotypes.

Research showed that weight based bias was stronger than race or gender. Dr Baites admitted surprise on the strongly negative test results and speculated that this was because obesity is generally considered to be within a person's self control.

These results are not really surprising. While there is occasionally a very real genuine physical medical problem, looking at the cause often shows a strong connection with the person's emotions.

Loneliness, relationship breakdowns, grief and constant rejection surely must create very low self-esteem, unfortunately creating over eating as a solace.

It is understandable that their problems are unlikely to inspire prospective employers.

BBQ Rules

Winter is finally coming to a close so the barbeque grills are ready to be fired up. In case you forgot the common BBQ Rules here they are. I received the simple rules in a much-forwarded e-mail. I do not know the original source of these BBQ Rules.

BBQ RULES
When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:

Routine...
(1) The woman buys the food.
(2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.
(3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - drink in hand.

Here comes the important part:
(4) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.

More routine...
(5) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
(6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another drink while he deals with the situation.

Important again:
(7) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.

More routine...
(8) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table.
(9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes. And most important of all:
(10) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.
(11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed 'her night off.' And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women.

In one of the forwarded e-mails, an experienced barbeque jockey wrote: "Hey! Turning meat and drinking beer is harder than it looks."

Stop Spread Of Mad Cow Disease - FDA Bans Use Of Certain Cattle Parts In Pet Food

U.S. makers of pet food and all other animal feed will be prevented from using certain materials from cattle at the greatest risk for spreading mad cow disease under a rule that regulators finalized.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which oversees animal feed, said excluding high-risk materials from cattle 30 months of age or older from all animal feed will prevent any accidental cross-contamination between ruminant feed (intended for animals such as cattle) and non-ruminant feed or feed ingredients.

Contamination could occur during manufacture, transport or through the accidental misfeeding of non-ruminant feed to ruminant animals.

Canada and the United States banned the inclusion of protein from cows and other ruminant animals such as goats and sheep in cattle feed in 1997, following a mad cow outbreak in Britain.

The measure issued today finalizes a proposed rule opened for public comment in October 2005. It goes into effect on April 23, 2009.

The major U.S. safeguards against mad cow disease are the feed ban, a prohibition against slaughtering most "downer" cattle -- animals too sick to walk on their own -- for human food,(does this mean they can be used in pet food? my comment) and a requirement for meat packers to remove from carcasses the brains, spinal cords and other parts most likely to contain the malformed proteins blamed for the disease.

The United States has found three cases of mad cow disease, including the first one detected in December of 2003. Soon after, U.S. beef exports were virtually halted. U.S. official have been slowly working to resume beef shipments.

Last week, South Korea officially announced it would gradually open its market to U.S. beef imports as Washington intensifies safety standards.

Eventually, if all goes well, a full range of U.S. beef boneless and bone-in, from animals of any age, would be shipped to a market estimated to be worth up to $1 billion a year.source

My feelings about this:
I thought this article was going to be about helping improve pet food and maybe make it safer. Then I realized it had nothing to do with Pet Health. Yes, it is about Human Health and that is very good. Why were they even using these "certain parts" to start with if they were not safe?
Are these the meat by-products used in pet food?

Seems like the shift was how the US wants to get the $1 billion dollars a year to exports. I hope this new ban helps make our meat supply safe to eat. I do think changes need to start in the feedlots, as in better hygiene, better food for the animals, and less antibiotics given to animals.

Reasons Americans Eat Normal Food (Junk Food)

Kim Klaver did a post asking "If "normal" food is so bad for us, why is it so common?"

"There are two main reasons. One is that it has more immediate appeal. You may feel lousy an hour after eating that pizza, but eating the first couple bites feels great. The other is economies of scale. Producing junk food scales; producing fresh vegetables doesn't. Which means (a) junk food can be very cheap, and (b) it's worth spending a lot to market it.

If people have to choose between something that's cheap, heavily marketed, and appealing in the short term, and something that's expensive, obscure, and appealing in the long term, which do you think most will choose?" -Paul Graham

We know we need to make a change. What SHOULD one eat that's quick, tastes good and doesn't make us look old and feel tired before our time? Kim Klaver source

Here are some reasons Americans don't eat healthy, in my opinion:

Don't like the taste of healthy food.
Can't afford it.
Don't have time to cook.
Bombardment of advertising from TV, radio, and online.
Picky eaters.
Don't know what is healthy.
Processed – boxed – ready to cook – just add water – frozen dinners are quick and convenient.
Family meals are a thing of the past.

Lack of knowledge about food:
Americans think they are healthy so don't put thought into what they eat. They think if they're still alive after always eating the food they eat today it can't be all that bad for them. For some, it takes a death of a loved one to make them think about nutrition. Better food choices can prevent disease.

If all we eat is junk fast food, it will taste better than healthy food. Kids are growing up eating junk food so they don't know what real food is. American's taste buds wouldn't know real food because it's so rare. If it isn't processed, loaded with sugar, salt, fat and will last longer than our kids because of the chemical preservatives, it has no flavor or doesn't taste right.

Junk food is always available. Look at the check out counters at any store, they are loaded with candy bars, bagged snacks and even energy gum! There are snack machines everywhere, even outside my son's dentist's office. What a positive sight when you leave the dentist; eat more candy and wash it down with this Coke. We are exposed to junk food everywhere. Stores are playing on our impulse shopping, besides it's just a candy bar, right?

This one is huge...
We are bombarded with advertisements from McDonalds, Burger King and Arby's to name a few. This keeps food on our mind and after a while we think, hey that sounds good I'm going to make a McDonalds run for lunch. Our kids see commercials for fruit snacks, cereal, chips, candy, pop-tarts or Oreos and pick these things out when grocery shopping. We are being led to eat what is advertised, the whole purpose of the marketing.

So leave a comment and share what you are doing to eat healthy, if eating healthy is important to you.

Popular Skin Care Products Labeled Natural Have Harmful Chemical

A few months ago I wrote about using Organic skin and personal care products. A recent study found that many of the most popular "natural" personal care products contain a carcinogenic substance called contaminant 1,4-Dioxane. (1,4-Dioxane is a by-product of cheap, short cut compounds, and is considered a chemical "known to the State of California to cause cancer." It is also suspected as a kidney toxicant, neuro-toxicant and respiratory toxicant, among others, according to the California EPA, and is a leading groundwater contaminant.)

None of the brands that were found to contain this ingredient are certified under the USDA National Organic Program. At least that's good news. It was discovered that some supposedly natural products contain this disease causing ingredient.

Some of the brands that have been found to contain this carcinogenic chemical include:
* Jason
* Kiss My Face
* Giovanni Organic Cosmetics
* Nature's Gate Organics
* Nutri Biotic
* Ecover Washing Liquid
* Healthy Times Baby Herbal Garden
* Whole Foods own Brand (365)
* Alba (some of Alba's products do not contain this chemical)
* Sea Chi Organics
* Citrus Magic

Some of the Brands that were tested to be Free of this dangerous ingredient include:
* Aubrey Organics
* Dr. Hauschka
* Nourish Food for Your Healthy Skin
* EO
* Avalon Organics
* Burt's Bees
* Desert Essence
* Zia

In a time when people are increasingly trying to buy natural products that don't contain harmful chemicals, it is a shame that these companies have done this because it makes people skeptical. source

The safest way to go is buy products with the Organic Seal. Refer to this post for much more info about choosing safe skin care products.

Have You Heard About Funky Monkey Fruit Snacks?

I'm always interested in finding new ways to get my family to eat more fruit. When I was asked to sample a fruit snack made from real fruit I was intrigued but somewhat skeptical that the fruit snack would taste good. I mean how many times have you bought something healthy that your kids will eat?

This fruit snack is called Funky Monkey, I know the name is kind of funky! They come in four flavors:

Bananamon- Banana - Cinnamon

Carnaval Mix- Banana, Pineapple, Apple, Papaya, Raisin

Jivealime - Pineapple, Lime Juice

Purplefunk - Banana, Acai

I expected a gummy type fruit snack but it's freeze dried and crunchy like a thick chip (potato.) I tested them first and was pleasantly surprised that they tasted good, I actually love them, except for the raisins because I don't like any raisins. The only thing I didn't like was the banana chips tend to stick to my teeth. I just rinsed my mouth with water and it took care of that.

My son liked the Carnaval Mix the best and the Bananamon the least. I think the cinnamon was a little too much for his taste but he still ate them.

Approximately 1 in every 100 Americans are avoiding gluten in their diets. Many are actually allergic to the protein, gluten, found in wheat products. For those suffering from Celiac disease it can be challenging to find snacks without the protein.

Funky Monkey Snacks are freeze-dried fruit pieces that are gluten-free (wheat-free and dairy-free), they all natural snacks with no added sugar, preservatives, colors or flavors. How great is that....

I will be packing these snacks for camping trips and snacks around the house. They are sold in many grocery stores now and on Amazon. Check their Funky website for stores offering them. The cost is from $1.99 to $2.49 per single serve bag.

I won't use these fruit snacks to replace eating real fruit but it makes a good wholesome snack that tastes good.

By the way I'm in no way affiliated or paid in any form for this product review, just a parent sharing a new way to get more fruits in our kids.

Go to the Funky Monkey site for more info and let the kids play some games and activities on the site. www.funkymonkeysnacks.com/

Long Duration Flights Triple Risk of Blood Clots

I fly from Minnesota to Texas a few times a year and always get achy legs. A resent report found the risk of developing potentially fatal blood clots in the legs roughly triples on a flight that lasts longer than four hours. The flights I take are usually only 2 1/2 hours but by the time I factor in the time sitting for take off and landing it's about 3 1/2 hours.

Deep vein thrombosis may be harmless and will often disappear without symptoms, but in some cases the blood clots come free from blood vessels in the legs and eventually lodge in the brain, heart or lungs, causing problems ranging from breathlessness and chest pain to heart attack, stroke or death.

Researchers examined the travel records of 8755 people who frequently traveled as part of their work for large companies or organizations within a 4.4-year period. They also questioned the participants about various potential risk factors, as well as occurrences of deep vein thrombosis.

The greatest risk factor was taking a long-haul flight, with 22 of the 53 observance cases occurring within eight weeks of such a trip. The researchers estimated that one blood clot occurs for every 4656 long-haul flights taken, a rate three times higher than that for shorter flights.

Equally risky was being on a birth control pill, but even women who were not on the pill are still twice as likely as men to develop deep vein thrombosis. Overweight passengers likewise had twice the risk, while people taller than six feet were 2.5 times more likely to develop blood clots than those shorter than five feet 5 inches.

Nevertheless, lead researcher Frits Rosendaal said the risks of deep vein thrombosis are not severe enough that long-haul passengers should feel the need to take blood-thinning medications. "The results of our study do not justify the use of potentially dangerous prophylaxis [treatment to prevent disease] such as anticoagulant therapy for all long haul air travelers, since this may do more harm than good," he said.

Do You Want Antioxidants With That?

Antioxidants are making headlines these days. Most of us have an idea of what they are: Vitamins A, C, & E, and they have something to do with saving us from free radicals. Do you really understand what antioxidants do for your body?

There has been talk of certain super fruits that have the most of these little miracle vitamins, and even something to do with chocolate and red wine. Sue from Health Nut Wannabe is learning and sharing, hey she's a health nut wannabe, but I think she's almost there...

Antioxidant:

Any substance that reduces oxidative damage (damage due to oxygen) such as that caused by free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals that attack molecules by capturing electrons and thus modifying chemical structures.

Well-known antioxidants include a number of enzymes and other substances such as vitamin C, vitamin E and beta carotene (which is converted to vitamin A) that are capable of counteracting the damaging effects of oxidation. Antioxidants are also commonly added to food products like vegetable oils and prepared foods to prevent or delay their deterioration from the action of air.
Antioxidants may possibly reduce the risks of cancer and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Antioxidants clearly slow the progression of AMD.

Acetaminophen - Coffee Combination Is Extremely Toxic to the Liver

If you take Tylenol (acetaminophen) don't take it with coffee. A new study from the University of Washington says the combination may be extremely dangerous for the liver.

Researchers performed the study on E. coli bacteria that had been genetically modified to produce a human liver enzyme that breaks down the pain killing chemical acetaminophen. (there's that genetically modified term again!) A toxic byproduct of this enzyme's activity is what leads to liver damage in cases of paracetamol overdose.

When the scientists expose the bacteria to a large combined dose of caffeine and paracetamol, production of the toxic byproduct tripled. Meaning, three times the risk of permanent liver damage.

According to British health expert Dr. Simon Thomas of the University of Newcastle, paracetamol is the culprit in 40 percents of drug overdoses in the United Kingdom, leading to 100 deaths or liver transplants yearly. Thomas said that it would be hasty to draw too many conclusions about the human liver from a study conducted on bacteria. "There are a million miles between E. coli and humans in terms of how paracetamol and caffeine are metabolized," he said.

The researchers noted that the doses they used in the study were enormous, and that there is as yet no evidence what dose would be required to be dangerous to humans. Because of this uncertainty, however, they advised caution in mixing the two drugs. Oh yes, caffeine is a drug.

Heart Drug Trasylol Pulled From Market After 50% Increase in Death Rate Discovered

Pharmaceutical giant Bayer AG has announced that it is withdrawing its drug Trasylol from the market in response to a request by the FDA, in the face of increasing evidence that the drug increases patients' risk of death.

"[The] FDA could not identify a specific patient population where the benefits of using Trasylol could outweigh the risks," an agency official said.

Trasylol, known by the generic name aprotinin, is given to patients before major heart surgeries in order to reduce bleeding. It was first approved by the FDA in 1993, and is prescribed to approximately 200,000 patients per year, 55 percent of those in the United States.

The FDA's request to Bayer came after the early abortion of a study by the Ottawa Health Research Institute, when researchers discovered that heart bypass and valve surgery patients given Trasylol were 50 percent more likely to die than patients not given the drug, even though they experienced less bleeding.

The study was halted early out of concern for the lives of other participants. Because of the early conclusion, however, researchers still do not know why taking Trasylol increases a patient's risk of dying.

Prior studies have also indicated that Trasylol is a risky drug. A 2006 study in the "New England Journal of Medicine" found that Trasylol is responsible for 10,000 to 11,000 cases of kidney failure each year, in addition to heart attacks and strokes. Another study, conducted by Bayer and initially concealed from the FDA, found that taking the drug increased the risk of stroke and death.

Because many doctors are used to prescribing Trasylol as a matter of course before heart surgeries, the FDA anticipates that phasing the drug out will be difficult. Two FDA panels convened after reports of health risks first surfaced and both concluded that the drug should remain on the market; only after the Canadian study results emerged did the agency ask Bayer to withdraw the drug.

In response to the same study and in contrast to the FDA's request for voluntary removal, German health regulators withdrew Trasylol's approval immediately.

Vitamins End Up In Septic Tanks Or Sit In Your Colon

What on Earth is that picture? Simple, it's an undigested pill, a slow release potassium tablet, sitting in the colon.

This is one reason why many (most) synthetic vitamins and supplements don't do much. It sits there, until it is later found in the septic tanks or back into our water supply. See here.

Image ©From Kim Klaver - Are Your Vitamins Safe?
"Absorption is the key to everything. How much you swallow means very (VERY) little. Dr. Jonathan Wright was informed by a patient who was a septic tank cleaner that many septic tanks of 'pill-poppers' have layers of pills at the bottom, a clear example of taking something that went on through and was never absorbed. source

It makes sense, at least to me. Vitamins are not going to do a whole lot of good and may even harm you. Get this free report to see what your vitamin has for ingredients. Are they whole foods that your body can actually use or are they synthetics that will sit in your colon, in a septic tank or end up back in our water supply?

I'm glad to see the studies come out about vitamins. It's past time for people to learn what are in the One-A-Day type multis. It's not nutritional supplements that are bad, it's synthetic ingredients in most vitamins sold in the U.S. and U.K.

Now if we could create a Naturally Occurring Standard - To insure that vitamin and mineral supplements are natural and taken directly from plant sources, and do not contain synthetics of any sort. We need a logo for these non-synthetic supplements, much in the way we have logos for Organic Foods. This would help eliminate the confusion about ingredients because to have this NOS label the supplement MUST be from whole foods, with these foods listed as ingredients.

Think about how simple it would be if everyone could read ingredients on supplements and know exactly what fruit, veggies, herb etc. it was. I love it and hope this happens sometime in my lifetime... Maybe with more books like The Hundred - Year Lie from Randall Fitzgerald we can find ways to get away from chemicals and toxins.

Myths About Foodborne Disease

The food supply has changed and is continuing to change in ways that can promote foodborne illness. In the past, improper food handling or storage would cause a relatively small group of people in a single area to get sick. Today, with our country’s industrialized and centralized system of food processing, a foodborne illness outbreak can potentially sicken millions – statewide, nationwide, or even worldwide. Gone, for example, are the days when hamburger was ground in the butcher shop from scraps left over from one or two sides of beef. Today, a single hamburger can contain meat from hundreds of different cattle.

Foodborne illness continues to sicken an estimated 76 million Americans, hospitalize 325,000, and kill 5,000 people each year. What is critical to keep in mind is that, unlike so many of the diseases and other health risks faced by Americans today, foodborne illness is largely preventable.

The Truth About Food Poisoning and Foodborne Disease -Correcting Some Common Misperceptions:

Americans often take "food poisoning" for granted. However, a growing barrage of medical evidence that documents serious problems arising from contamination in our food, combined with the increasing complexity of our food supply system, reveal that nonchalance towards "food poisoning" is outdated and dangerous. Here, S.T.O.P. takes aim at some of the common misperceptions about foodborne disease, and explains why it is in our families' best interest to clean up our food.

Myth: Foodborne illness is caused by food that has spoiled or "gone bad".
Fact: While spoiled food can make a person sick, most foodborne illnesses are caused by bacterial or viral organisms that have contaminated the food, not the food itself. Most foodborne contamination that makes people sick does not affect the appearance, taste, smell or texture of the food.

Myth: All foodborne illnesses are the same.
Fact: Thousands of different bacteria and viruses cause foodborne illness, and health consequences can vary from mild flu-like symptoms to death depending on the organism, the amount ingested, and the unique immune response characteristics of the person exposed. Anyone experiencing abdominal pains, blood in urine or bowel movements, or even milder symptoms lasting more than a couple of days should seek immediate attention.

Myth: Foodborne illness is unusual.
Fact: Since people may only hear of two or three outbreaks a year, many assume that foodborne disease is only a sporadic problem. In reality, the Centers for Disease Control estimate that 1 out of every 3 Americans becomes sick from contaminated food each year, 325,000 Americans are hospitalized, and 5,000 die annually because of the severity of their symptoms. Most foodborne illnesses are isolated cases, not outbreaks. Often, what people assume is the stomach flu is actually a case of disease caused by contaminated food.

Myth: Foodborne illness is a fleeting inconvenience.
Fact: Foodborne illnesses are increasingly being linked to long-term injury and health conditions. For example, reactive arthritis is known to be caused predominantly by foodborne diseases like Salmonellosis, while another common bacteria, Campylobacter, is implicated in up to 40% of all cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, characterized by sudden-onset acute paralysis.

E. coli 0157:H7 is the leading cause of acute kidney failure in American children and can also lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, blindness and death.

Myth: Foodborne illness can always be traced to the last thing you ate.
Fact: Foodborne illness can be caused by contamination in food eaten a few hours ago, a few days ago, or even a few weeks ago.

Myth: Safe cooking can prevent all foodborne disease.
Fact: Americans can reduce their family's risk of getting sick by understanding and practicing safe food handling. These include proper refrigeration, cooking to an adequate internal temperature, and guarding against cross-contamination. However, there are many, many instances of foodborne illness where consumer behavior does not play a role. The only sure way to prevent foodborne disease is for food producers to keep disease contamination out of their products in the first place.

Myth: Foodborne illness is no big deal for healthy people.
Fact: Certain populations, like children, elders, pregnant women, and the immune-compromised, have a higher statistical risk of illness and dire consequences, but no one is immune from the ravages of foodborne disease.

Myth: Foodborne illness is inevitable.
Fact: Most foodborne diseases could be prevented by greater industry and regulatory commitment to producing a safe food supply. Every time a case of foodborne illness occurs, it spotlights a gap in the food safety network that has allowed the introduction of potentially deadly pathogens into food. Food producers can and should do more to prevent contamination from happening in the first place, and the government and American families have the right to demand that they do.

New Report Says Vitamins A, C and E are 'a waste of time and may even shorten your life'

Study from Great Britain shows vitamins do not extend life and may even cause premature death, according to a respected group of international scientists.

After reviewing 67 studies involving more than 230,000 men and women, the experts say there is no convincing evidence that taking supplements of the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E can make you healthier.

The review involved trials on beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium.

It says in-depth analysis of the different trials does not support the idea that vitamins extend lifespan.

'Even more, beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E seem to increase mortality,' says the review.

'There was no evidence to support either healthy people using antioxidants to prevent disease or for sick people to take them to get better,' said the review.

Antioxidants are used by the body as protection against free radicals, which are molecules produced during normal metabolism.

These can damage the body if they flourish in an uncontrolled way as a result of illness, overexposure to toxins or ageing.

It is thought antioxidants such as vitamin C confer health benefits by 'grabbing' or neutralising free radicals, and many people take them as health 'insurance'.

The theory behind using antioxidants is to combat oxidation - the chemical reaction that causes metals to rust - which in cells can damage DNA, thus raising the risk of cancer, other diseases and the changes associated with ageing.

Previous human and animal laboratory research suggested that boosting antioxidant levels in the body might extend life, but other studies produced neutral or even harmful results. More here...

It's true that synthetic man-made chemcials have been proven to cause harm. Just makes sense, put chemicals in a human body and it will cause harm. Look at the deaths everyday from approved drugs. These drugs are all man-made chemicals, in a lab.

Not all vitamins are created equal. I wonder how many Americans even know why they take vitamins, or if they know the difference in a "vitamin pill" and a whole food nutritional supplement. What about the difference in taking isolated vitamins and minerals?

I'll be posting more on this subject this week. Until then if you want to see the ingredients that are bad for a body and compare the vitamin you take grab the free report, "Are Your Vitmains Safe?"

What Exactly Is A Daily Balanced Healthy Diet?

I've been asking people if they think they get all the vitamins and nutrients their body needs from only food. So far 60% have said yes, they get everything they need from food.

Now I would like to know how these people are doing it. What are you eating, please define a balanced healthy diet for us. I do eat organic, stopped all fast food and steer away from processed foods but I feel it's still not enough.

I've read that you can get all the nutrients you need from a balanced diet. And in theory, that's a wonderful idea. But I have never had anyone define for me what a 'balanced healthy diet' really is. I don't feel having optimal health from eating today's modern diet is likely or even possible.

Of course, it would be better wonderful to get all nutrients totally naturally from foods alone. But today's 'civilized' diet of highly processed, unripe-picked, distance-shipped, quick-frozen, ethylene-gassed, pesticide-ridden, herbicide-ridden, hormone-laden, genetically modified foods - completely assures us that the foods will be deficient and the body's nutrient needs will be increased to handle the chemical stresses of all the additives that are consumed in the typical diet, in my opinion.

So please do share with us. What is your balanced healthy diet everyday?

What to Eat For Healthy Fingernails

Are you ready to show your finger - and toenails for summer or will you cover them with nail polish? There are a variety of different problems that can affect finger - and toenails.

Sometimes the change in nails can be health related and most commonly nutritional deficiencies.

Health problems including heart disease, respiratory problems and anemia can cause telltale changes in the nails.

Anything that impairs the body's absorption and use of proteins for tissue repair can cause abnormal nail growth.

Poor production of stomach acid or digestive enzymes, poor protein intake, poor nutrition from junk and processed foods, excessive exposure to water, chemicals, and nail biting can all play a part in nail health. This can make nail growth very slow, cause horizontal or vertical ridges and nails may be brittle.

Finding and correcting these problems can make a visible difference in nails, sometimes within weeks.

Health problems can affect the condition of nails...

Blackish, splinter like bits in the nails can be a sign of bacterial endocarditis, a serious heart infection.

White nail color can be a sign of liver diease.

Yellowish, thickened, slow-growing nails can be related to lung disease.

Easily broken nails can be a sign of deficiency of calcium, silica and certain trace minerals.
--Calcium-rich foods include all dairy foods, especially yogurt, dark green leafy vegetables, almonds, beans, and sardines.

Horizontal ridges can be an indicator of injury, infection or illness. May be an under active thyroid.

Vertical ridges may point to poor nutrient absorption due to junk food and processed food diet.

Pitted nails may be associated with psoriasis.

Spoon-shaped nails can mean an iron deficiency.
--Eat more iron-rich foods such as eggs, liver, green-leafy vegetables, blackstrap molasses, almonds, poultry, whole grain breads and cereals, avocados, beets, dates, lima beans, pumpkins, peaches, pears, prunes, watercress, soybeans, raisins.

Very pale colored nail beds may be a sign of anemia.

For brittle or poorly growing nails eggs are a good source of sulfur-containing amino acids, which are excellent for supporting nail growth.

Avoid refined sugar and flour. This helps keep blood-insulin levels under control, which will allow better absorption of proteins.

Take a good enzyme supplement.

Eat foods rich in Vitamin A.
--Vitamin A food sources; milk, butter, cheese and eggs - chicken, kidney, liver, liver pate - fish oils, mackerel, trout, herring.

Another source of vitamin A is a substance called beta-carotene. This is converted by the body into vitamin A. It is found in orange, yellow and green vegetables and fruits.

If you have white spots under your nails eat foods with vitamin B and zinc.
B-vitamins are abundant in organ meats, like liver and kidneys, as well as fish, cheese, yogurt, milk, eggs, mushrooms, beans (especially chickpeas), avocadoes, bananas, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

Sources of zinc include beef, lamb, pork, crabmeat, turkey, chicken, lobster, clams and salmon.

If you are a vegetarian, dairy products such as milk and cheese, yeast, peanuts, beans, and wholegrain cereals, brown rice, whole wheat bread, potato and yogurt have zinc. Pumpkin seeds offer one of the most concentrated non-meat food sources of zinc.

More food sources for good nail health:

--Vitamin C in citrus fruits, red peppers, broccoli, dark greens, kiwis, and strawberries.
--Folic acid is plentiful in orange juice, beans, whole grains, and green vegetables.
--Essential fatty acids are found in fatty fish such as tuna, salmon, trout, mackerel, and herring, as well as flaxseeds, nuts, seeds, and tofu.

Paying attention to nail hygienge and good healthy nutrition may help you avoid infection, ingrown toenails and other nail problems.

Don't Make Viagra Safe - Just Add Warnings to Label That You Could Go Deaf...

The FDA has announced an immediate change to the labeling of drugs in a family that includes popular impotence drugs, warning that they may lead to sudden, severe and potentially permanent hearing loss. The erectile dysfunction drugs include Pfizer's Viagra, Eli Lilly's Cialis and GlaxoSmithKline's Levitra. Also receiving a label change will be blood pressure drug Revatio.

The FDA reviewed side effect reports on the drugs after a case study was published in the Journal of Laryngology & Otology in 2007, reporting that a 44-year-old man had suffered sudden hearing loss after only 15 days on Viagra. Upon review, the FDA uncovered 29 post-approval reports of patients undergoing sudden hearing loss from PDE5 drugs. In two-thirds of cases, the hearing loss appeared to be permanent. Hearing loss was sometimes, but not always, accompanied by dizziness or ringing in the ears. The majority of cases involved only one ear.

The FDA advises all patients on PDE5 erectile dysfunction drugs to stop taking the medication immediately upon the first sign of sudden hearing loss, and to seek immediate medical care.

The fact that the FDA is just now finding out about the risk of sudden hearing loss from impotence drugs demonstrates the failure of its drug approval process to identify serious health risks before drugs are approved," said consumer health advocate Mike Adams.
Natural News

I wonder how many men will reconsider taking this drug. I guess it will be a trade off, have sex again with the risk of being deaf for the rest of your life, or hearing all the wonderful sounds around and little sex. There are other things to try, like food but that will not be instant like a drug and in our instant gratification times for many men this is not an option.

We Might Get Rid of Bacteria on Food But Will Also Lose Nutrients With Food Irradiation

Cartoon - Mike Adams - Natural News.com
There's a new study underway to sterilize your food. This will help cut food borne disease but at a cost, it will also destroy the nutritional value of fresh produce.

The study is being done by the USDA and the American Chemical Society -- a pro-chemical group that represents the interests of industrial chemical manufacturers. The latest push comes from USDA researchers who conducted a study to see which method more effectively killed bacteria on leafy green vegetables like spinach.

The thing to realize here is that many of the healing properties of these foods are destroyed through pasteurization or irradiation. If you're a government that wants to "take away the People's medicine," the fastest way to accomplish that is to mandate the sterilization of the food supply. Kill the foods and you take away the People's medicine, and that forces the population to use pharmaceuticals instead.

The corporations running this country (which also run the U.S. government) want the U.S. food supply to be dead. They don't want foods to be used as medicines, and they sure don't want the natural medicines found in foods competing with their own patented pharmaceutical medicines (that just happen to earn them a whole lot more money than any food ever did).

Don't you find it curious that this attack on the food supply is coming out now, right after all this incredible news about the healing power of foods has been hitting the science journals? Every week, it seems, we find out about another amazing health property in a food. Black raspberries reverse oral cancer. Pomegranates halt prostate cancer. Green tea halts breast cancer. The list goes on.

The FDA, for its part, has for many decades conducted its natural medicine censorship campaign, whose only purpose is to deny the People access to accurate information about the healing properties of natural medicines found in foods and herbs. But apparently that wasn't enough: The Internet came along and people found a way to educate themselves. So since the FDA couldn't keep the truth about natural medicine bottled up and censored, the government has now apparently decided to just sterilize all the foods, thereby destroying the natural medicine and transforming Mother Nature's gifts into dead calories.

Published research on irradiated foods reveals that irradiation does change, and can actually ruin, the flavor, odor, appearance, and texture of food. Such research repeatedly finds that irradiated foods smell rotten, metallic, bloody, burnt, grassy, and generally off. The taste has been described as like sulfur, singed hair, burnt feathers, burnt oil, and rancid fat. Beyond the obvious yuck factor, serious questions remain as to whether irradiated foods are safe to eat.

Irradiated foods can lose from 2-95% of their vitamins. For example, irradiation can destroy up to 80% of the vitamin A in eggs, up to 95% of the vitamin A and lutein in green beans, up to 50% of the vitamin A and lutein in broccoli, and 40% of the beta-carotene in orange juice. Irradiation also doubles the amount of trans fats in beef.

Despite 50 years of research, food scientists still do not fully understand how these changes take place. Much of the ongoing research, in fact, is focused on devising new ways to hide these changes, rather than addressing the cause of the changes themselves.

Using recent food-contamination scandals as a springboard, irradiation has been touted as the solution to food-borne illness in everything from spinach to deli meats. But a good, hard look at the systemic food and agricultural problems that cause these tragic outbreaks in the first place has yet to be undertaken by government agencies.

Irradiation is an after the fact "solution" that does nothing to address the unsanitary conditions of factory farms, and actually creates a disincentive for producers and handlers to take preventative steps in production in handling. The longer shelf life created by irradiation (affording longer shipping distances) also provides greater opportunity for post-treatment contamination via shipping, handling, etc. Additionally, irradiation does not work to stop toxins produced by some bacteria (like botulism); viruses, like foot and mouth disease or hepatitis, are resistant to the irradiation doses used in food; and prions (thought to be the cause of BSE, or Mad Cow disease) are resistant as well.

Should We Make Cold Meds Safe For Children or Just Add Warning Labels on Package?

When a child comes down with a cold, parents want to give them relief so they go to the pharmacy searching through the many brands of over the counter cold medicine. But, did you know that there have been no studies to see if the medications are effective for children younger than 6 – years- old, and evidence is showing the medicine may be dangerous?
These are drugs so I would think the FDA would study them before approving them safe for children.

FDA guidelines allow label dosage data to be reduced 50 to 75 percent of what an adult would take. Many doctors are concerned about the FDA making this assumption because children often react very differently to meds than adults.

The FDA knows of 54 decongestant – related deaths in children and 69 deaths linked to antihistamines between 1969 and 2004. After concerns were raised about the safety of these meds pharmaceutical companies voluntarily withdrew 14 different infant cold medicines.

According the FDA, there are more than 800 cold-related over-the-counter medications on the market, and the revenue for sales of these products to children alone amounted to $3.8 billion in 2006. Doctors, however, say that fluids, moist air and saline drops are the best way to treat colds in children.

In response to the call for a marketing ban, one drug industry trade group -- the Consumer Healthcare Products Association -- responded that such regulations are unnecessary, instead suggesting that drug companies add warnings to pediatric cold medicines. Among the suggested labels are, "Do not use in children under 2," and "Do not use to sedate children."

Here's my question for you:
Do you feel the FDA is doing everything they can to protect us, Americans?

Fruits Gone Bad - They Aren't Picked Ripe - Which Ones Ripen Off The Plant?

It’s always a guessing game buying produce in the store. The fruit is never sweet, tomatoes don't taste like a tomato, in short, the taste leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don't remember the last fully ripe juicy peach I had.

The produce is being picked before it's ripe so the taste isn't there. Some fruits and veggies only ripen on the plant while some only ripen after being picked. Here's the list:

· Fruits that NEVER ripen after they are picked:
soft berries, strawberries, blueberries, etc. , cacao, cherries, grapes, citrus fruits, lychees, olives, pineapples, and watermelons.

· Fruits that ripen ONLY after picking: avocados.

· Fruits that ripen in color, texture, and juiciness but NOT in flavor or sweetness after picking: apricots, blueberries, figs, melons (except watermelons), passionfruit, peaches, and persimmons.

· Fruits that get sweeter after they are picked: apples, cherimoyas, kiwi, mangoes, papayas, pears

· Fruits that ripen in EVERY way after picking: bananas.

Ten Foods to Boost Your Libido

Need some help getting in the mood? Natural News has some ideas on natural ways to get that "feeling" back. Of course it's food related, again. Did you really expect anything else?

Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds contain zinc, which helps testosterone production in men.
Zinc deficiency can make a woman completely lose her sex drive.

Goji Berries (Wolfberry)
Goji berries help to stimulate libido by increasing testosterone levels.

Maca
A new superfoods, it increases sperm count and testosterone levels in men and makes people desire sex more frequently, especially women.

Bananas
They contain an enzyme called Bromelain which is important for sexual health.

Celery
This sexual stimulator boosts a powerful substance known as androsterone, which is an odorless aphrodisiac in male perspiration.

Avocado
Historically avocados had a long-standing stigma as a sexual stimulant.

Bee pollen
Bee pollen can help boost the sperm count. Pollen's role in nature is to fertilize.

Asparagus
Asparagus is very high in vitamin E, which is a vital nutrient for good sex. It has aphrodisiac properties.

Chillies
Capsaicin releases endorphins and other "feel good" hormones necessary for a hot sex life.

Basil
Basil increases circulation and stimulates the sex drive.

Figs
Figs are very high in amino acids, which are critical to increasing libido and boosting sexual stamina.

Garlic
Garlic contains high levels of allicin, which can improve blood flow to the sexual organs.

6 Foods - Spices to Help Reduce Cancer and Heart Disease Risk

Food for thought and health. Research these foods on how we can let food be the "drug" to help prevent heart and cancer health concerns. I'm not saying to stop all drugs you are on, that would put your health at major risk! Take the time to learn "other" options to synthetic chemicals, better known as prescription drugs.

Onions may reduce high blood pressure.

A naturally occurring plant compound found in onions may reduce high blood pressure if consumed regularly, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Utah and published in the Journal of Nutrition.

Carrots reduce cancer risk, prevent infection, offer good eye health, and healthy skin.
A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that falcarinol, a natural phytonutrient in carrots, can reduce the risk of cancer by a third.

Vibrant Eyes From Carrots
Carrots keep our eyesight strong. That is because it is packed full of beta carotene. Beta Carotene gives the carrot its name and orange color. The body converts it to vitamin A, which is the vitamin most essential for 20-20 vision.

Smooth and Glowing Skin
Carrots are less well known for their positive effect on the skin. The PH balancing effect protects against acne and aging. In fact, carrots can actually help to clear up skin problems, and keep the skin smooth and glowing.

Prevent Disease
In addition to fighting cancer, the beta-carotene in carrots has been shown to prevent conditions such as heart disease, and macular degeneration.
Carrots Cut Cancer Risk by a Third

Capers Could Protect from Cancer Effects of Meat Consumption
Capers are high in antioxidants, and may help counteract the harmful health effects of meats when used as a seasoning, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the University of Palermo, Italy, and published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

While many other fruits and vegetables contain a significantly higher antioxidant content, the researchers found that capers may be particularly helpful at offsetting the damaging effects of meat when the two foods are consumed together.

Curcumin Reduces Heart Enlargement and May Prevent Heart Failure
Eating curcumin, a natural ingredient in the spice turmeric, may dramatically reduce the chance of developing heart failure, researchers at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre of the Toronto General Hospital have discovered.
Other research has found that curcumin, found in turmeric, may be able to slow down and stop the blood cancer multiple myeloma. Researchers at the University of Texas in Houston report on a laboratory study showing that curcumin could stop cancer cells with multiple myeloma from replicating and kill off the remaining cancerous cells.
Allicin from Garlic Boosts Flow of Blood to Protect the Heart
The chemical that causes garlic to give you bad breath may be the same one that protects your heart, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Garlic is also known for its anti-cancer abilities. Used topically, crushed garlic eats away cancer tumors on the skin. Used internally, garlic halts the growth of cancer tumors throughout the body, functioning as a natural, non-prescription "chemotherapy" agent that has no negative side effects.
Extract of Broccoli Sprouts May Protect Against Bladder Cancer
Broccoli is turning into a Super Food. In 1992, Johns Hopkins scientists found a new and highly concentrated source of sulforaphane, a compound they identified in broccoli that helps mobilize the body's natural cancer-fighting resources and reduces risk of developing cancer. It has long been know that broccoli may also help prevent breast cancer.

UCLA researchers this past month have shown that sulforaphane in broccoli switches on a set of antioxidant genes and enzymes in specific immune cells, which then combat the injurious effects of molecules known as free radicals that can damage cells and lead to disease.

Be Proactive With Probiotics

Most Americans have occasionally had recourse to antibiotics, a common treatment to fighting disease and infection. Think about the word "antibiotics", anti means against: bios mean life. An antibiotic destroys small organisms within our body, without distinguishing between the good beneficial ones, commonly called the good bugs. Antibiotics are supposed to only kill the bad bacteria, but often kill the bacteria you need as well.

Probiotic is the opposite of antibiotic, these good bugs are "for life."

Some doctors recommend that you take probiotics anytime you are taking any prescription medicine. This is quickly becoming the second most common use for probiotics, after gastro-intestinal problems, such as IBS or Crohn's Disease. Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, such as Crohn's, may require larger amounts of probiotics than the average problem.

Adding a good probiotic and prebiotic to your diet has been shown to be safe and a smart thing to do consistently, daily.

Benefit of probiotics:

Studies have shown that people who are lactose intolerant have a better time digesting dairy products with probiotics in the ingredients.
Fight cancer-causing carcinogens.
Decrease the risk of cancer. Prevention of Colon Cancer.
Improves digestion
Improves allergies
Lower blood pressure
Reduce inflammation
Helps irritable bowel syndrome and colitis
Lowers cholesterol
Prevents kidney stones
Prevents Helicobacter pylori
Lower risk of developing auto-immune diseases.
Prevents harmful bacterial growth under stress
Help fight infections.

Whether you are sick or not, these good bugs are a healthy boost for your immune system.

Prebiotics help with calcium and other mineral absorption, immune system effectiveness, bowel pH, and intestinal regularity. I take a probiotic and prebiotic diet supplement for the most benefit.

The Facts About Pasteurization and Homogenization of Dairy Products

The popular milk campaign has been very successful in reversing declining milk sales in America over recent years. Common teaching is that milk is a "perfect food," for building strong bodies in children and preventing osteoporosis as we age. The modern dairy products that are available in most supermarkets are nothing like the unpasteurized, unhomogenized milk of yesteryear, however. Today's milk looks the same, but it is not the same product.

Age-Defying Beauty Help From 10 Superfoods

I read an article from Oprah.com today that I want to share. It's written by Dr. Nicholas Perricone with helpful information on Superfoods. Enjoy...

The benefits from eating healthy are endless. And, according to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, some foods can be eaten to help you look and age better!

Acai fruit
This little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world. It can often be found in juice form in health food and gourmet stores.

Anything in the "Allium Family"
Garlic, onions, leeks, scallions, chives and shallots can all help the liver eliminate toxins and carcinogens.

Barley
This can be used as a breakfast cereal, in soups and stews, and as a rice substitute. Barley's also high in fiber, helping metabolize fats, cholesterol and carbohydrates.

Green Foods
Green foods like wheat and barley grasses can be bought in powder, tablet or juice form, and offer greater levels of nutrients than green leafy vegetables. They also help cholesterol, blood pressure and immune response.

Buckwheat: Seed & Grain
Buckwheat is loaded with protein, high in amino acid, stabilizes blood sugar and reduces hypertension.

Beans & Lentils
You can reduce cholesterol while beefing up on antioxidants, folic acid and potassium. Try kidney, black, navy, pinto, chickpeas, soybeans, peas and lentils.

Hot Peppers
Both bell and chili peppers contain antioxidants, have twice the Vitamin C as citrus fruit and work as great fat burners.

Nuts & Seeds
You can't go wrong with a handful of nuts a day—walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, macadamia and pistachio nuts contain Omega 3 fats, which are great for your heart. Raw, unsalted nuts and seeds are best.

Sprouts
Numerous varieties of sprouts are great with any meal. They're a great source of protein and Vitamin C. Try adding them to any dish and your immune system will get a boost.

Yogurt and Kefir
These cultured foods contain healthful bacteria that aid immune function, and the calcium helps burn fat. Try using them as a base for a smoothie.

Don't forget to add lots of fresh fruits and veggies to your daily diet, my comment.

Health Benefits
Although many of these foods have reported medical benefits, remember at all times that if you have any type of health problem or physical symptom, do not self-diagnose or self-medicate—even if with a food or herb. Trust your medical professional first and foremost in this department. However, the 10 foods included here do have incredible health benefits. Listed below are just some of the reasons to include these foods in your diet—every day:

--Prevent or reduce inflammation
--Help regulate metabolism and burn body fat
--Lower total cholesterol
--Lower blood pressure
--Help protect against heart disease
--Help protect against cancer
--Help protect organs from toxins
--Promote digestive health

Malt-O-Meal Company Recalls Unsweetened Puffed Rice and unsweetened Puffed Wheat Cereals - Possible Salmonella Contamination

Minneapolis, MN -- April 5, 2008 -- Malt-O-Meal announced today that it is voluntarily recalling its unsweetened Puffed Rice and unsweetened Puffed Wheat Cereals produced with "Best If Used By" codes between April 8, 2008 (coded as "APR0808") and March 18, 2009 (coded as "MAR1809") because they may have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recalled product was distributed nationally, marketed under the Malt-O-Meal brand and as some private label brands including Acme, America's Choice, Food Club, Giant, Hannaford, Jewel, Laura Lynn, Pathmark, Shaw's, ShopRite, Tops and Weis Quality. A comprehensive listing of impacted products can be found at www.malt-o-meal.com/recallinfo.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this situation. All other Malt-O-Meal products are unaffected by this action and are safe for continued sale and consumption. The products affected by this recall represent less than one-half of one percent of the company's annual production of ready-to-eat cereal.

"Our first and highest priority is the safety of the consumers who use our products," said Malt-O-Meal President and CEO Chris Neugent. "It's important that we spread the word about this situation quickly and broadly in order to remove even the slightest possibility that someone will consume something harmful. We apologize for this situation and promise to do everything to complete the recall as quickly as possible."

The recall was initiated after the company's internal routine food safety testing detected the presence of Salmonella in a product produced on March 24, 2008. The company immediately commenced an investigation to determine the root cause of this one positive finding as well as the extent of any possible exposure. Initial results from this follow-up investigation indicate that additional product may have been exposed to this contaminant. Thus, out of an abundance of caution to protect consumers, the company has chosen to voluntarily remove all unsweetened Puffed Rice and unsweetened Puffed Wheat products with "Best If Used By" codes between April 8, 2008 (coded as "APR0808") and March 18, 2009 (coded as "MAR1809"). Investigation into the source of the Salmonella has determined a root cause of this situation and corrective measures have been taken to ensure that there is no reoccurrence of this issue.

Summer is Coming - Get Sunlight For Better Health

After years of denying the health benefits of sunlight, conventional researchers are finally starting to recognize the important role that ultraviolet light plays in human health. Getting sunlight on your skin, research now shows, is extremely important for preventing and even reversing chronic diseases. They are talking about prostate cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, mental depression, osteoporosis and even, to some extent, type 2 diabetes.

You most likely already know the importance of calcium for your health. If you don't have enough calcium circulating through your blood, you're going to have cardiovascular problems and you will probably end up with heart disease. Calcium is crucial for healthy nervous system function, as well. Calcium all by itself is going to reverse many chronic diseases, but without calcium, there's no question that you will be accelerating those diseases and reducing your lifespan.

Without vitamin D in your small intestine, your body will not absorb calcium even if you take an excess of supplements. You must have vitamin D in your body in order to use calcium. So if you're out there taking coral calcium supplements or eating a lot of green leafy vegetables, but not getting sunlight on your skin, then you are probably not absorbing the calcium you are going to such great trouble to ingest.

Get some sun on your skin
Make sure that you're getting sunlight on your skin. If you do this one thing, and do it consistently, it will create such a positive health outcome. Sunlight will make a world of difference in your life. It will change your mood. It will change your biochemistry. It will enhance your bone mineral density, and it will help your body prevent various forms of cancer.

In fact, vitamin D is a key compound in the regulation of cancer cell growth. Researchers are just now figuring out that people who are chronically deficient in vitamin D, which includes most Americans, are at far greater risk of a variety of different cancers. Vitamin D has been shown to be the single most powerful chemical compound known to medical science for preventing hormone-related cancers such as breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Protect your skin with outstanding internal nutrition
Nutrition makes all the difference when it comes to sun exposure. Keep in mind that it takes a little bit of time for this nutrition to work its way into the tissues of your skin. So if you haven't been engaging in good nutrition but you want sunlight, don't make the mistake of jumping out into the sun right away. Give yourself a couple of weeks following high-density nutritional supplementation first (and use whole food-based supplements, not the cheap chemical multivitamins sold at retail).

It's important that you don't make the mistake of relying on isolated vitamins; eat whole food concentrates if you want to boost your antioxidant count, which will help protect you from sunburn.

An alternative to sunlight is to find other sources of vitamin D. The best way to do that is to drink cod liver oil on a daily basis. A tablespoonful of cod liver oil would go a long way toward boosting your vitamin D count and protecting you from chronic disease.

Don't believe for a second that vitamin-D-fortified milk is going to give you enough vitamin D. Most of the vitamin D in milk has been destroyed by excess exposure to light. It's a terrible way to get vitamin D. The most efficient vitamin D supplement is still fish oil, and cod liver oil is the best way to go.

There are four main points you should take from this:
1. You have to get sunlight into your life in order to be healthy and prevent or even reverse major chronic diseases. Start getting more sun.
2. Boost your antioxidant count, because antioxidants will protect you from the risk of overexposure to sunlight.
3. If you can't get sunlight, visit a tanning booth to get ultraviolet radiation. It's a secondary choice, but it's better than doing nothing. Remember not to use tanning booths for too long, and be sure to have great nutrition for at least 30 days before tanning in a booth.
4. If you can't get sunlight or get to a tanning booth, find other sources of vitamin D. The best source is cod liver oil, which you can mix into a delicious shake the same as you would most whole food supplements.

If you do these things, you will be amazed with your improved health. You will have healthier bones, tissues and blood. You'll help prevent cancer, depression and gum disease. You'll heal more quickly from injury, and your mood will markedly improve.

This is the power of vitamin D, a nutrient so miraculous that if it could be patented and sold for profit, it would be among the top selling drugs in the world.
