Stonyfield Farm Recalls Blueberry Yogurt

Organic yogurt maker Stonyfield Farm is voluntarily recalling Stonyfield Organic Fat Free Blueberry Yogurt, packaged in 6 oz cups, carrying product codes printed along the cup bottom that start with the following dates:
Apr 13 08
Apr 14 08
Apr 15 08
April 25 08
Apr 26 08

The recall comes in response to consumer complaints reporting plastic or glass fragments in these particular batches of fat free blueberry yogurt. There have been no reports of injury. People who bite into or swallow a fragment could possibly be injured, prompting this precautionary recall. Although the company believes the problem is not widespread, we are taking this measure to ensure the safety of our consumers.

Stonyfield Farm is advising our distribution network to immediately remove these specific code-dates of 6-ounce fat free blueberry yogurt from retail shelves. The yogurts are sold at natural food stores and grocery retailers nationwide.

Consumers who may have purchased fat free blueberry yogurts with these code dates are asked to return opened and unopened containers to their retailers. You will be reimbursed for the full value of your purchase.

Consumers with questions should contact Stonyfield Farm Consumer Relations at 1-800-PRO-COWS or email us at crelations@Stonyfield.com.

"Our first priority has always been and always will be the welfare of our consumers," says Gary Hirshberg, Stonyfield Farm President and CE-Yo. "While we continue to investigate these complaints and believe that the risk of injury is extremely remote, we feel that this voluntary measure is the prudent and responsible step at this time."

Why Has Milk Been Banned At WalMart and In Europe?

Milk: America’s Health Problem. I've been buying unpasteurized (raw) milk for my family for some time. Not because of the information you will read here, I didn't even know about this until recently. I just know pasteurized milk is not as good as "the real thing."

Why is American Milk Banned in Europe?
American dairy milk is genetically-modified unless it’s labeled “NO rBGH”
Genetically-engineered bovine growth hormone (rBGH) in milk increases cancer risks.
American dairy farmers inject rBGH to dairy cows to increase milk production.
European nations and Canada have banned rBGH to protect citizens from IGF-1 hazards.
Monsanto Co., the manufacturer of rBGH, has influenced U. S. product safety laws permitting the sale of unlabeled rBGH milk. (Monsanto would lose billions of dollars if rBGH were banned in America.)

Is there any milk not contaminated with rBGH and IGF-1?
Yes. Milk that is clearly labeled “NO rBGH” is free of rBGH and does not contain excess levels of IGF-1.

What about cheeses?
American-made cheeses are contaminated with rBGH and excess levels of IGF-1 unless they’re labeled “NO rBGH”. Imported European cheeses are safe since Europe has banned rBGH.

What is IGF-1?
Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1)is a normal growth factor. Excess levels have been increasingly linked by modern research to human cancer development and growth.

How does IGF-1 get into milk?
In 1994, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH). According to rBGH manufacturers, injections of rBGH causes cows to produce up to 20 percent more milk. The growth hormone also stimulates the liver to increase IGF-1 levels in the milk of those cows. Recently, Eli Lilly & Co., a manufacturer of rBGH, reported a ten-fold increase in IGF-1 levels in milk of cows receiving the hormone. IGF-1 is the same in humans and cows, and is not destroyed by pasteurization. In fact, the pasteurization process actually increases IGF-1 levels in milk.

How does rBGH milk containing IGF-1, affect, humans?
After the rBGH milk is consumed, IGF-1 is not destroyed by human digestion. Instead, IGF-1 is readily absorbed across the intestinal wall. Additional research has shown that it can be absorbed into the bloodstream where it can effect other hormones.

Is IGF-1 likely to increase the risk of specific kinds of cancer?
It is highly likely that IGF-1 promotes transformation of normal breast cells to breast cancers. In addition, IGF-1 maintains the malignancy of human breast cancer cells, including their evasiveness's and ability to spread to distant organs. (Increased levels of IGF-1 have similarly been associated with colon and prostate cancers.) The prenatal and infant breast is particularly susceptible to hormonal influences. Such imprinting by IGF-1 may increase future breast cancer risks, and may also increase the sensitivity of the breast to subsequent unrelated risks such as mammography and the carcinogenic and estrogen-like effects of pesticide residues in food, particularly in pre-menopausal women.

Are cows adversely affected by elevated IGF-1 levels?
Cows injected with rBGH show heavy localization of IGF-1 in breast (udder) epithelial cells. This does not occur in untreated cows. Cows are also affected in other ways by rBGH, through increased rates of mastitis, an udder infection. Industry data show up to an 80 percent incidence of mastitis in hormone-treated cattle, resulting in the contamination of milk with significant levels of pus. Mastitis requires the use of antibiotics to treat, which leaves residues to pass on through the milk for human consumption.

What does the FDA say about IGF-1?
The FDA has trivialized evidence for increased levels in rBGH milk and insist that any such increases in IGF-1 are not dangerous, and do not pose a health risk. However, a 1990 study by Monsanto, the leading maker of rBGH, explicitly revealed statistically significant evidence of growth promoting effects. Feeding relatively low doses of IGF-1 to mature rats for only two weeks resulted in statistically significant and biologically highly significant systemic effects: increased body weight; increased liver weight; increased bone length; and decreased epiphyseal width.

The FDA has failed to investigate the effects of long-term feeding of IGF-1 and treated milk on growth. Furthermore, the FDA has been hostile to the labeling of rBGH milk. The agency has prohibited dairy producers and retailers from labeling their milk as "hormone-free," The FDA states that such labeling could be "false or misleading" under federal law. Monsanto is suing several milk producers for using the label.

What have other scientists said about IGF-1?
Concerns about increased levels of IGF-1 in milk from cows treated with rBGH are not new. In 1990, the National Institutes of Health Consensus panel on rBGH expressed concerns about adverse health effects of IGF-1 in rBGH milk, calling for further study on health impacts, particularly infants. In 1991, the Council on Scientific Affairs of the American Medical Association stated:" Further studies will be required to determine whether the ingestion of higher than normal concentrations of bovine insulin-like growth factor is safe for children, adolescents and adults." Unfortunately, these studies were never done.

HERE ARE THREE THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO:
1. Do not buy milk from cows treated with rBGH. Unless the milk-label states “NO rBGH”, you can assume the milk is contaminated. rBGH has become so widely used by dairy farmers. Most health food stores sell rBGH-free milk.

2. Contact your local supermarket and find out if they have a policy regarding rBGH and milk. Make clear that you would like rBGH-free milk.

3. Write to the FDA and express your concern that they are restricting the labeling of rBGH-free milk.

U.S. Military Personnel Use Alternative Medicine Just Like Everyone Else

A post I did a while back showed the Air Force seeking natural sleep aids because of the side effects prescription sleeping drugs caused. Here's the post if you missed it. A study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine now says members of the U.S. military use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) at approximately the same rate and in the same demographic patterns as the wider U.S. population.
Researchers surveyed 5,000 enrolled members of the U.S. Navy or Marines, and received 1,305 usable responses. Among those who responded, 37 percent had used at least one form of CAM therapy in the previous year.

Women were more than twice as likely to use CAM therapies than men, while officers were 50 percent more likely than enlisted troops to use them.

Those with higher levels of physical pain and/or dissatisfaction with conventional medical care were significantly more likely to seek CAM.

These patterns are similar to those found for the wider U.S. population. Prior studies have suggested that 40 percent of U.S. residents use at least one CAM therapy per year, an increase of 25 percent since 1990. The "average" user tends to be a white, educated, middle-class woman between the ages of 25 and 49.

In the current study, military personnel were most likely to use herbal therapies, high-dose mega vitamin therapy and massage, and least likely to use biofeedback, homeopathy and hypnosis. Sixty-seven percent of those who underwent hypnosis also used relaxation therapy, and 78 percent of homeopathy patients also used herbal therapy.

Studies of the general population have found chiropractic, herbal medicine, massage and relaxation therapy to be the most popular treatments.

The researchers noted that because the data were self-reported, they may not be entirely reliable. In addition, they may not accurately represent the habits of Navy and Marine personnel in general, because more than half of those surveyed did not respond.

A prior study of military families found that 28 percent reported using at least one CAM per year, while studies of veterans found that between 27 and 50 percent did so. source

Picky Eaters In Your Family? Try Buying Fresh From Your Local Farmers Market For Better Taste –9 More Reasons…

My son will not eat grocery store fruit because it's too hard, too soft, too sour, too whatever. He will eat any fruit I buy from the farmers market because it tastes good and has the right texture. I know fruits and vegetables from the store do not taste the way they did when I was a kid. It's because of many things like chemicals, being picked unripe, poor soil and the time it spends in trucks before it ever makes it to my store. I buy local because I want my son to eat fruits and veggies and I want them to be clean (remember the recalls.)

Why buy local?
1. Locally grown food tastes better.
Food grown in your own community was probably picked within the past day or two. It's crisp, sweet and loaded with flavor. Produce flown or trucked in from California, Florida, Chile or Holland is, quite understandably, much older. Several studies have shown that the average distance food travels from farm to plate is 1,500 miles. In a week-long (or more) delay from harvest to dinner table, sugars turn to starches, plant cells shrink, and produce loses its vitality.

2. Local produce is better for you.
A recent study showed that fresh produce loses nutrients quickly. Food that is frozen or canned soon after harvest is actually more nutritious than some "fresh" produce that has been on the truck or supermarket shelf for a week. Locally grown food, purchased soon after harvest, retains its nutrients.

3. Local food preserves genetic diversity.
In the modern industrial agricultural system, varieties are chosen for their ability to ripen simultaneously and withstand harvesting equipment; for a tough skin that can survive packing and shipping; and for an ability to have a long shelf life in the store. Only a handful of hybrid varieties of each fruit and vegetable meet those rigorous demands, so there is little genetic diversity in the plants grown. Local farms, in contrast, grow a huge number of varieties to provide a long season of harvest, an array of eye-catching colors, and the best flavors. Many varieties are heirlooms, passed down from generation to generation, because they taste good. These old varieties contain genetic material from hundreds or even thousands of years of human selection; they may someday provide the genes needed to create varieties that will thrive in a changing climate.

4. Local food is GMO-free.
Although biotechnology companies have been trying to commercialize genetically modified fruits and vegetables, they are currently licensing them only to large factory-style farms. Local farmers don't have access to genetically modified seed, and most of them wouldn't use it even if they could. A June 2001 survey by ABC News showed that 93% of Americans want labels on genetically modified food - most so that they can avoid it. If you are opposed to eating bio-engineered food, you can rest assured that locally grown produce was bred the old-fashioned way, as nature intended.

5. Local food supports local farm families.
With fewer than 1 million Americans now claiming farming as their primary occupation, farmers are a vanishing breed. And no wonder - commodity prices are at historic lows, often below the cost of production. The farmer now gets less than 10 cents of the retail food dollar. Local farmers who sell direct to consumers cut out the middleman and get full retail price for their food - which means farm families can afford to stay on the farm, doing the work they love.

6. Local food builds community.
When you buy direct from the farmer, you are re- establishing a time-honored connection between the eater and the grower. Knowing the farmers gives you insight into the seasons, the weather, and the miracle of raising food. In many cases, it gives you access to a farm where your children and grandchildren can go to learn about nature and agriculture. Relationships built on understanding and trust can thrive.

7. Local food preserves open space.
As the value of direct-marketed fruits and vegetables increases, selling farmland for development becomes less likely. You have probably enjoyed driving out into the country and appreciated the lush fields of crops, the meadows full of wildflowers, the picturesque red barns. That landscape will survive only as long as farms are financially viable. When you buy locally grown food, you are doing something proactive about preserving the agricultural landscape.

8. Local food keeps your taxes in check.
Farms contribute more in taxes than they require in services, whereas suburban development costs more than it generates in taxes, according to several studies. On average, for every $1 in revenue raised by residential development, governments must spend $1.17 on services, thus requiring higher taxes of all taxpayers. For each dollar of revenue raised by farm, forest, or open space, governments spend 34 cents on services.

9. Local food supports a clean environment and benefits wildlife.
A well-managed family farm is a place where the resources of fertile soil and clean water are valued. Good stewards of the land grow cover crops to prevent erosion and replace nutrients used by their crops. Cover crops also capture carbon emissions and help combat global warming. According to some estimates, farmers who practice conservation tillage could sequester 12-14% of the carbon emitted by vehicles and industry. In addition, the habitat of a farm - the patchwork of fields, meadows, woods, ponds and buildings - is the perfect environment for many beloved species of wildlife, including bluebirds, killdeer, herons, bats, and rabbits.

10. Local food is about the future.
By supporting local farmers today, you can help ensure that there will be farms in your community tomorrow, and that future generations will have access to nourishing, flavorful, and abundant food.

Want Healthy Hair? 10 Foods That Help

I'm amazed at all the shampoo and conditioners on the market today. You can find one for every hair type, to fix any problem. Shampoo and conditioner alone won't give you healthy hair. I've had excellent results by putting a tiny bit of virgin coconut oil on my hair.

Hair grows about 1/4 to 1/2 inch every month. How our hair, skin and nails grow is linked to nutrients we get from food. Food is key.

Food will not give you thicker hair if that isn't your hair type but a diet of healthy protein, omega fatty acids, vitamins A - C - B12, biotin, zinc and iron can help.

Fish especially salmon is good because it's an omega - fatty acids food. Dark green vegetables like seaweed, broccoli, spinach and kale are a reasonable source of omega-3 essential fatty acids if eaten regularly.
Other green vegetables, like spring greens, dark salad leaves, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, & parsley are reasonable sources of omega-3.

Dark Green Leafy Vegetables
Yet another reason to get more veggies in your body!
Spinach, broccoli and Swiss chard, are a sample of veggies with an excellent source of vitamins A and C. Your body produces a natural hair conditioner sebum from eating veggies high in vitamins A and C. Dark green vegetables also provide iron, calcium and omega 3 fatty acids

Beans - Lentils
Legumes like kidney beans and lentils provide protein to help hair growth. They also supply iron, zinc, and biotin. Biotin deficiencies can result in brittle hair.

Nuts
Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, and walnuts are rich in ellagic acid. The walnut is considered a brain food but is still good for hair and skin.

Poultry
Inadequate protein or low-quality protein diets can cause weak brittle hair. A profound protein deficiency can result in loss of hair color. Poultry also provides iron with a high degree of bioavailability, meaning your body can easily reap its benefits.

Eggs
Eggs are one of the best protein sources you can find.
They also contain biotin and vitamin B-12, which are important beauty nutrients.

Whole Grains
Whole grains, including whole-wheat bread and whole-grain breakfast cereals are good sources of zinc, iron, and B vitamins.

Pork and Button Mushrooms are loaded with zinc, an antioxidant.

Low-Fat Dairy Products
Low-fat skim milk and yogurt are good sources of calcium, an important mineral for hair growth.

Prunes - Chinese cabbage - Bok choy - Nori - Endive - Sweet potatoes - Carrots
All above foods are an excellent source of vitamin A, which promotes a healthy scalp.

No product you put on your hair will have long term benefit so think of a holistic approach. Look at the whole picture and fix bad hair from the inside with healing food.

5 Foods For Healthy Skin

Americans spend big bucks for expensive cosmetics to treat skin problems such as acne, wrinkles and dryness, but most people are overlooking the cheapest, safest and most effective remedies: healing foods.

A host of healthy, natural foods offer potent healing and preventative powers to remedy a wide range of skin troubles. These foods can dramatically improve skin for a fraction of the price of costly cosmetics or dermatologist visits:

Green Tea --
Green tea is rich in antioxidants that reduce inflammation and protect cell membranes. It has been proven to reduce the damage of sunburns and overexposure to ultraviolet light, which in turn reduces the risk of skin cancer. Green tea is also high in polyphenols -- compounds that eliminate cancer-causing free radicals.

Recent research by scientists at the Medical College of Georgia shows that the polyphenol most abundant in green tea -- EGCG -- also acts as a "fountain of youth" of sorts for skin by reactivating dying skin cells. In addition to its skin-healthy properties, green tea is also high in vitamins C, D and K, as well as riboflavin, zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron.

Salmon --
Salmon -- along with other fatty fish, walnuts and flaxseed -- is high in healthy fatty acids that are key for achieving healthy skin. Essential fatty acids such as omega-3s help keep cell membranes healthy by keeping out harmful substances as well as allowing nutrients to enter cells and exit with waste products. Omega-3s also reduce the body's production of inflammatory agents that can damage the skin. Salmon is also rich in protein, potassium, selenium and vitamin B12.

Blueberries --
Blueberries are considered by many experts to be the highest food source of antioxidants, which target free radicals that can wreak havoc on skin cells. The antioxidants and phytochemicals (plant sources of nutrition) in blueberries neutralize DNA-damaging free radicals, reducing cell damage. When skin cells are protected from damage and disintegration, the skin looks younger for longer. Blueberries are also an excellent source of soluble and insoluble fiber, vitamin C, manganese, vitamin E and riboflavin.

Carrots --
Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, which is a required nutrient for healthy skin. They also contain high levels of antioxidants, which prevent free radical damage of skin cells. Vitamin A is required for developing and maintaining skin cells, and a deficiency of the vitamin can cause dry skin. Carrots are also a superior source of fiber, biotin, vitamins K, C and B6, potassium and thiamine.

Water --
Drinking plenty of water will help keep your skin young and healthy-looking. Water in caffeinated or sugary beverages does not count; water intake must be from pure, clean water, which rejuvenates skin cells. Water both hydrates cells and helps them move toxins out and nutrients in. Nutrition expert Liz Lipski, PhD, CCN, says when the body is properly hydrated, it sweats more efficiently, which helps keep the skin clean and clear.

In addition to consuming therapeutic quantities of green tea, salmon, blueberries, carrots and water, consumers should avoid certain foods that trigger bad skin reactions. Such ingredients include sugar, white flour, saturated fats and fried foods, which are especially bad for the skin, since they can trap oil and bacteria beneath the skin, causing acne and other skin ailments.

The skin is considered the outside indicator of inside health, and putting expensive creams, lotions and treatments on the outside of the skin can't alleviate problems that stem from inner nutritional deficiencies. Consuming the right foods and avoiding the wrong ones can reveal beautiful, youthful-looking skin without the high price tag of expensive cosmetics.

Pets See The Doctor More Often Than Their Guardians Do

Have you had your check up?

Does your dog or cat visit the vet more than you go to the doctor? If so, you're not alone. A poll by Veterinary Pet Insurance revealed that 96% of animal guardians take their companions to the vet at least once a year. Compare that to a survey done by the Center for Disease Control, which found that only 83% of adults visited a health care professional in a year.

I am very prompt with taking my pets in for checkups. I have a wonderful holistic clinic so it's always a wellness check. I guess this is one reason my dear sweet Tara lived to be 18-years-old.

I do try to go in for wellness checks for myself but I have to admit it doesn't always happen. I believe in preventive and sustaining health so I never need to see a doctor for illness.

Coconut Oil For Weight Management and So Much More

Coconut oil can be considered a "medicine" in the same sense that other healthful foods are "medicines" which help our bodies achieve or maintain good health. If adding coconut oil to your diet as a supplement you will reap some benefit ( it's high in lauric acid .) If we look at replacing unhealthful fats (shortening, margarine and hydrogenated oils general, as well as most of the vegetable oils at the grocery store) with coconut oil we can reap the maximum benefits it offers. For people who have trouble with fats in the diet such as Crohns' disease or other digestive problems coconut oil offers relief because it's readily usable by the body without having to be broken down in the digestive system.

This is what coconut oil can do for your health:

Reduce risk of heart disease
Reduce risk of cancer and other degenerative conditions
Helps prevent bacterial, viral and fungal infections
Supports immune system function
Helps control diabetes
Provides an immediate source of energy
Supports healthy metabolic function
Improves digestion and nutrient absorption
Supplies important nutrients necessary for good health
Promotes weight loss
Helps prevent osteoporosis
Has mild delicate flavor
Helps prevent premature aging and wrinkles
Helps protect against skin cancer and other blemishes
Helps keep skin soft and smooth
Functions as a protective antioxidant

What coconut oil does not do:

Does not increase blood cholesterol level
Does not promote platelet stickiness or blood clot formation
Does not contribute to heart disease
Does not contribute to weight problems.

Cantaloupes Associated With Salmonella Outbreak - 50 Illnesses in 16 States and 9 in Canada

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an import alert regarding entry of cantaloupe from Agropecuaria Montelibano, a Honduran grower and packer, because, based on current information, fruit from this company appears to be associated with a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak in the United States and Canada. The import alert advises FDA field offices that all cantaloupes shipped to the United States by this company are to be detained.

In addition, the FDA has contacted importers about this action and is advising U.S. grocers, food service operators, and produce processors to remove from their stock any cantaloupes from this company. The FDA also advises consumers who have recently bought cantaloupes to check with the place of purchase to determine if the fruit came from this specific grower and packer. If so, consumers should throw away the cantaloupes.

To date, the FDA has received reports of 50 illnesses in 16 states and nine illnesses in Canada linked to the consumption of cantaloupes. No deaths have been reported; however, 14 people have been hospitalized. The states are Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

The FDA is taking this preventive measure while the agency continues to investigate this outbreak in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state partners. Such intervention is a key component of FDA’s Food Protection Plan.

Symptoms of foodborne Salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. In persons with poor health or weakened immune systems, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections. Individuals who have recently eaten cantaloupe and experienced any of these symptoms should contact their health care professional.

The FDA recommends that consumers take the following steps to reduce the risk of contracting Salmonella or other foodborne illnesses from cantaloupes:

Purchase cantaloupes that are not bruised or damaged. If buying fresh-cut cantaloupe, be sure it is refrigerated or surrounded by ice.

After purchase, refrigerate cantaloupes promptly.

Wash hands with hot, soapy water before and after handling fresh cantaloupes.

Scrub whole cantaloupes by using a clean produce brush and cool tap water immediately before eating. Don't use soap or detergents.

Use clean cutting surfaces and utensils when cutting cantaloupes. Wash cutting boards, countertops, dishes, and utensils with hot water and soap between the preparation of raw meat, poultry, or seafood and the preparation of cantaloupe.

If there happens to be a bruised or damaged area on a cantaloupe, cut away those parts before eating it.

Leftover cut cantaloupe should be discarded if left at room temperature for more than two hours.

Use a cooler with ice or use ice gel packs when transporting or storing cantaloupes outdoors.

What Doctors Have To Say About Drugs

If you have visited our blog more than once you know I'm against always using drugs at the drop of a hat. I believe in letting our body heal itself holistically through food, herbs and natural methods. Just a list has a great eye opening post about Quotes on drugs by MDs. I listed 4 here.

"If all the medicine in the world were thrown into the sea, it would be bad for the fish and good for humanity" O.W. Holmes, (Prof. of Med. Harvard University)

"Drugs never cure disease. They merely hush the voice of nature's protest, and pull down the danger signals she erects along the pathway of transgression. Any poison taken into the system has to be reckoned with later on even though it palliates present symptoms. Pain may disappear, but the patient is left in a worse condition, though unconscious of it at the time." Daniel. H. Kress, M.D.

"The person who takes medicine must recover twice, once from the disease and once from the medicine." William Osler, M.D.

"We are prone to thinking of drug abuse in terms of the male population and illicit drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. It may surprise you to learn that a greater problem exists with millions of women dependent on legal prescription drugs." Robert Mendelsohn, M.D

Study Shows Men More Likely Than Women To Eat Asparagus

My husband and I eat very different. He's the meat, bread, potatoes lover and washes it down with a diet soda. I'm the veggie, nuts, hot cereal and tea drinker.

Men and women really do have different food preferences according to research. The study shows what I've always known about the food my family likes and dislikes.

In general, men are more likely to report eating meat and poultry items and women are more likely to report eating fruits and vegetables. This was an extensive survey from May 2006 to April 2007.

What men are likely to eat:
Meat and poultry products especially duck, veal, and ham. They were also more likely to eat certain shellfish such as shrimp and oysters.

What women are likely to eat:
Vegetables, especially carrots and tomatoes. As for fruits, they were more likely to eat strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and apples. Women also preferred dry foods, such as almonds and walnuts, and were more likely to consume eggs and yogurt when compared with men.

There were some exceptions to the general trend. Men were significantly more likely to consume asparagus and brussels sprouts than women while women were more likely to consume fresh hamburgers (as opposed to frozen, which the men preferred). source

I didn't need research to tell me these things but now I know we are the average (American) family.

Two Wolves - Native Wisdom

"One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

'My son,' he said, 'the battle is between two wolves inside us all...'"

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

"The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

"The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather:

"Which wolf wins?"

"The old Cherokee replied,

"The one you feed."

I try hard to feed the Good wolf inside me, at times I'm tested and choose the Evil but only when people have shown their Evil towards me. Luckily I always come back to where I feel the best. It's easier for me to live by freely giving my Good to everyone I cross roads with.

Live your best life, feed the Good and pass it around freely.

What Stands Between You And Perfect Health?

The only thing that stands between a person and their own perfect health is information. Empowered with the right information, anyone can improve their health, reduce their dependence on prescription drugs, enhance their quality of life and expand their mental awareness and creativity.

Achieving outstanding health is not complicated. The human body already knows how to be healthy. All you have to do is give your body outstanding nutrition so that it has the building materials it needs to heal disease and rebuild itself from the inside out. You must also avoid all of the foods and food ingredients that cause disease. Today, more than 95% of all chronic disease is caused by food choice, toxic food ingredients, nutritional deficiencies and lack of physical exercise.

Foods That Help With Spider Veins

At least 40 percent of women develop spider veins, networks of tiny red, blue or purple blood vessels that appear on the upper thighs, behind the knees and on the feet.

Spider veins appear when tiny blood vessels dilate near the surface of the skin.

What you eat can help strenghten the blood-vessels and help prevent new spider veins, but it's unlikely to fix the ones already present.

Eat a balanced high fiber diet. Constipation can be a factor in spider or varicose veins, because straining in an effort to force a bowel movement puts added pressure on the veins.

Eat fruits and green veggies. They have phytochemcials the strengthen blood-vessel walls and help keep veins healthy.

Avoid fried foods. Fats add to circulation problems.

Vitamin C and bioflavonoids help improve circulation and reduce pain. Bioflavonoids also strengthen weak blood-vessel walls.

Good food sources with Vitamin C and bioflavonoids:
Citrus fruits with thick skins like oranges, lemons and grapefruits – eat the thick white part of the fruit.
Sweet Peppers
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Kale
Asparagus
Spinach
Tomatoes
Strawberries
Apricots
Paypaya
Cantaloupe
Kiwi
Dandelion or Violet leaves
Tea
Blueberries and other dark colored fruits or berries.

Vitamin E is an excellent blood thinner that helps improve circulation. It also helps relieve pain caused by varicose veins.

Good food sources with Vitamin E:
Wheat Germ
Egg Yolks
Butter
Nuts
Whole Wheat Flour

I've had spider veins since I was 30-years-old. I've had the saline injections that got rid of the veins showing but new ones always came up. The biggest help for me was a change in diet and taking whole food multis everyday. I still have some spider veins but they are actually getting better, not as noticable and I don't have any new ones.

Study on Male - Female Depression- Women Seek Help - Men Die

Have you heard of Andropause? It is a biological change experienced by men during their mid-life, and is often compared to female menopause. While menopause relates to a cessation of reproductive ability, andropause refers to a diminishment of the key male hormone testosterone which can lead to a severe loss of energy, concentration and depression, mood swings resulting in uneccessary nastiness and spiteful behaviour towards others.

I know first hand about menopause, been there, done that! I didn't know men had their "change of life." I'm learning about this through fellow blogger Cathy. She wrote a shocking post -Women seek help - men die.

"Women seek help--men die." This conclusion was drawn from a study of suicide prevention conducted by a group of international researchers. They found that 75% of those who sought professional help in an institution for suicide prevention were female. Conversely 75% of those who committed suicide in the same year were male. Since depression is a significant risk factor for suicide and men receive less treatment for depression than do women, it is vitally important that we have a better understanding of the way depression manifests itself in males.

What Experts Say About Nutritional Supplements & Who Needs Supplements?

The Standard American Diet makes it tough to get everything we need from food. Human beings need 40 different nutrients a day to survive and function properly. That includes 13 different vitamins, eight to ten amino acids, 15 minerals and two fatty acids.

Our body can't produce these nutrients on its own, but they can all be found in a number of foods. Unfortunately, with so many people eating fast food, eating out and taking on restrictive diets, getting everything you need isn't just difficult, it seems near impossible. The only option that makes sense is to supplement. There are, however, differences among vitamins.

Experts Say...
Experts have historically agreed upon the need for every American to consume an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals to help fill the nutritional gaps in his or her diet. Even vegetarians, who some consider to be the archetype of the healthy lifestyle, need a multi to get the nutrients their diets don't provide in adequate amounts.

Everyone should take a multivitamin, recommends The American Medical Association (AMA). The average diet falls short of daily nutritional needs, compounded by stress and a fast-paced lifestyle. Even when eating well, a multi ensures that you get all the nutrients you need, some of which are difficult to obtain from food alone. A good multi can help build a strong foundation for a lifetime of optimal health.

We simply cannot obtain all the nutrients we need from the food we eat. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, even people who maintain a healthy diet should supplement with vitamins to improve their overall health.

Ok, so who needs a supplement?
1. People with digestive diseases, illness or surgeries that can interfere with the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals
2. Vegetarians who avoid all animal foods and may have a deficit of vitamin D, vitamin B-12, calcium, zinc, and iron
3. Smokers
4. People with certain major illnesses or injuries that can increase the need for healing nutrients
5. Women with heavy menstrual bleeding (may need more iron)
6. Menopausal women
7. Women who are trying to conceive – pregnant or breast-feeding
8. People taking certain medications that can increase or decrease the effectiveness of vitamins and minerals
9. People following weight loss programs that severely restrict food intake or calorie levels which can result in poor nutrient intake
10. People with food allergies that require avoiding groups of foods and may result in nutritional deficiencies
11. People who abuse alcohol
12. Adolescents
13. Athletes
14. Drug users, prescription or recreational
15. Elderly
16. Health fanatics
17. Junk food regulars
18. Overweight and obese people
19. People who supplement with specific nutrients
20. Sick people
21. Stressed out people
22. Workaholics

Enzymes For A Healthy Gut--And More

Charles T. Copeland wrote - To eat is human; to digest, divine. This is so true. Our body needs enzymes to function properly. Not only do we need them for healthy digestion, but we also need them to live as without them we wouldn’t be able to breathe, swallow, drink, eat and digest our food.

As we age we are dealing with more stress, environmental pollution, chemicals, and our emotional issues. All of these deplete our body’s natural ability to make enough enzymes to meet the demands of daily life.

So what are enzymes and how important are they to us?
They help the body digest food and assimilate nutrients from proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and plant fibers. In addition, enzymes assist in all chemical reactions taking place in our body; including the regeneration of cells/tissues and the elimination of waste products/toxins as well as supporting our immune system. In short, enzymes make things happen!

Proper and complete digestion is essential for good health. Digestive enzymes, used properly, can provide a substantial benefit to most everyone, especially those consuming a great deal of cooked or processed food. Enzymes may ease bloating, gas and heaviness with meals. Proteases may be beneficial between meals if you have an autoimmune condition or are recovering from an injury or illness.

Do we have an infinite supply of enzymes?
No. Researchers have learned we lose digestive enzymes through sweat, body waste and the natural ageing process of the organs that produce our digestive enzymes.

Our current fast-paced society with its preoccupation with convenience has resulted in more chemical pollution, overly processed foods and microwave cooking, all of which create a lot of free-radical damage in our body, also known as a process of accelerated ageing. This process of free-radicals lowers the body's natural ability to produce enzymes and meet its demands to function well.

The three main categories of Enzymes are:

1. Digestive Enzymes, secreted by the salivary glands, stomach, pancreas, and the small intestine help break down food into simple components.

2. Food Enzymes exist naturally in raw food. If the food is cooked above 116 degrees, the high temperature involved in the cooking process destroys the enzymes. Digestive enzymes and food enzymes serve the same function; they digest the food so it can be absorbed into the blood stream. The difference between the two is that food enzymes are derived from fresh, raw, uncooked foods such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, raw unpasteurised dairy, meat and fish , where digestive enzymes are made inside our body.

3. Metabolic Enzymes are produced in the cells and are found throughout the body in the organs, in the bones, the blood, and inside the cells themselves. Metabolic enzymes help run the heart, brain, lungs, and kidneys. Hundreds of metabolic enzymes are necessary for the working of our body.

Enzyme supplementation in our diet:
* Improves overall digestion so we have more energy for life
* reduces the effects of aging, wrinkles, sun spots.
* aids in disease prevention
* aids in the prevention of cancer and debilitating diseases
* minimizes the negative effects of cancer therapies
* boosts the immune system
* reduces inflammation/soreness of muscle and joint pain
* retards periodontal disease
* prevention of heart disease
* speeds healing after surgery
* reduces the negative effects of anesthetics
* aids in reproduction problems, regulating cycles, infertility and sterility
* cleanses our system from allergic reactions

Enzymes and what they do:

Lipase: An enzyme that digests fats, helping to maintain correct gall bladder function. When added to a meal as a supplement, it digests dietary fat, relieving the gallbladder, liver, and the pancreas which would otherwise need to produce the required enzymes.

Protease: This enzyme breaks down protein found in meats, poultry, fish, nuts, eggs and cheese and may be helpful for people with food allergies or who have difficulty digesting protein.

Amylase: A natural plant extract which helps your body break down and assimilate starches and carbohydrates. Works great for digesting starches and carbohydrates and may be useful for people with gluten sensitivities.

Cellulase: An enzyme that breaks down food fiber (cellulose) found in fruits and vegetables.
Cellulase, which is not found in the human system, breaks the fiber bonds and increases the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables.

Lactase: Digests milk sugar. Lactase deficiency is the most common and well-known form of carbohydrate intolerance. It is estimated that approximately 70% of the world's population is deficient in intestinal lactase. Supplemental lactase enzymes have been found to decrease the symptoms of lactose intolerance.

Phytase: This enzyme breaks down phytic acids in grains, seeds, and simple sugars into fructose and glucose.

Maltase: Digests complex and simple sugars. Maltase breaks down unused glycogen in muscle. Glycogen is a thick, sticky substance that is converted from sugars and starches and is stored in your muscle cells for future use. If stored glycogen continues to build up in the muscle tissues, it leads to progressive muscle weakness and degeneration.

Papain from papaya and Bromelain from pineapple, both help digest protein. Bromelain is also a natural anti-inflammatory.

Why are enzymes so important for digestion?
In its raw state, food contains enough natural enzymes for it to be digested. However, when the food is heated above 116 degrees, the natural enzymes present are also heated and denatured, that is they become inactive. This makes the enzymes totally ineffective in the digestive (breaking down) process.

What can we do about it?
Eating raw food as much as possible such as spinach, green salad, and shredded carrots with our meats is helpful. Use an enzyme supplement, remember our body will not keep making new enzymes.

Another very important fact to consider is if we totally depend on our internally made digestive enzymes, we are placing more stress on our body's systems/organs. In turn, these systems and organs have less time to make more enzymes for rebuilding and replacing worn out, damaged cells and tissue and keeping our immune system strong.

Your body’s top priority is making sure it has enough nutrients to run its systems. This means digesting food and converting it into nutrients. There is no activity more important to the body than this. This takes a lot of energy and enzymes, particularly if the body must make most or all of these enzymes.

Remember that no food can be digested without digestive enzymes, and they are destroyed above 116 degrees. It sheds light on why so many people suffer from digestive complaints and lethargy.

Dr. DicQie Fuller PhD, in her book The Healing Power of Enzymes, emphasizes the importance of enzymes for digestion:
“Eighty percent of our body's energy is expended by the digestive process. If you are run down, under stress, living in a very hot or very cold climate, pregnant, or are a frequent air traveler, then enormous quantities of extra enzymes are required by your body. Because our entire system functions through enzymatic action, we must supplement our enzymes. Aging deprives us of our ability to produce necessary enzymes. The medical profession tells us that all disease is due to a lack or imbalance of enzymes. Our very lives are dependent upon them!” source...

The Emotions Of Menopause...

Being almost post-menopausal I've researched many things to help with "the change." I recently came across Cathy's blog. It's a blog about menopause, using hormones, tips about how to deal with menopause, a wealth of information.

Cathy writes, "If women could write a book of words to describe how they feel during the perimenopausal and menopause stages, it would probably be a best seller.
The title could very well be, “Menopause: The Dictionary of Emotional Angst.” Not bad, right?

Let’s go through some of the emotional changes experienced during menopause. While considered a normal part of the process, some of the emotional changes experienced by women undergoing perimenopause or menopause can include:
irritability; feelings of sadness; lack of motivation; anxiety; aggressiveness; difficulty concentrating; fatigue; mood wings; and tension.

Irritability and feelings of sadness are the most common emotional symptoms of menopause. Often, they can be managed through changes in your lifestyle, such as learning ways to relax and reduce stress".

How To Gain Weight While Eating Healthy

Obesity problems are always in the news. What about the people who want or need to gain weight? Gaining weight while eating healthy is a challenge - just like losing weight while eating healthy.

There are a few reasons why someone might be trying to gain weight.

Some people are naturally thin and would like to be larger.

Physical illnesses can result in excessive weight loss.

Eating disorders can result in massive weight loss and can, in fact, result in death from the lack of nutrition.

Many elderly people have trouble preparing foods and are prone to excess weight loss as well.

Whatever your reason for wanting to gain weight, you need to do so in a healthy manner. The foods you eat must supply you with much needed calories and give you all of the nutrients and phytochemicals that your body may have been missing for a while.

In order to gain weight, you need to consume more calories than you are currently taking in every day.

Choosing Healthy Foods to Gain Weight
Remember that you need to choose healthy foods to really be healthy. This is especially important if you are recovering from an illness or have been under-nourished for a long time. You want to gain weight and you want to improve your health as well.

Tips for Increasing Calories While Keeping a Healthy Diet

· Add cheese, nuts and dressings made with olive, walnut or canola oil to salads.
· Eat starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn more often.
· Go for dried fruits or fruit juices as healthy higher calorie snacks.
· Add cream or cheese sauces to fish and baked chicken breast.
· Choose herbs and spices to increase the flavors of your food rather than relying on salt.
· Add powdered milk to soups and sauces to offer calories and protein.
· Spread Peanut butter on whole grain bread, apples or celery sticks to get a great source of protein and calories.
· Stick with healthy desserts, such as a bowl of berries with whipped topping and lot of chopped nuts.
· Spoon healthy salad dressings on sandwiches and as a dip for vegetables.
· Dip whole grain bread into olive oil, walnut oil or flax seed oil. If you don't care for much meat, add legumes such as black beans, kidney beans and pinto beans as protein sources.
· Pick dark chocolate as a treat. Dark chocolate has antioxidants that other sweets don't have.

The foods that you choose to eat are important for more than just the amount of calories they contain. The foods you eat also have to give you the nutrients you need. Keep your high-calorie foods healthy; don't add non-nutritious junk foods to your diet. Junk foods may have lots of sugar and unhealthy fats that add the calories you may want, but they don't have much to offer nutritionally. Make sure you eat foods that have good nutritional value along with those extra calories.

Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the best fuel for your body, although your body can use fats and proteins for energy if necessary. Your best sources of carbohydrates are fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Vegetables and fruits should be the cornerstone of any healthy diet. You don't want to avoid healthy green vegetables like green beans and asparagus just because they are low in calories. Green vegetables have a lot of nutritional value. You can add healthy calories to those vegetables by topping them with nutritious foods like olive oil, almonds and shredded cheese.

Fruits are packed with vitamins and phytochemicals that will boost your health. Snack on fresh fruits any time of day to increase your calorie intake.
Another large source of carbohydrates are the grains and cereals. The USDA suggests that you eat six to 11 servings of foods from the bread and cereal group. At least three of those servings should be from 100 percent whole grain products. Whole grains are a great source of fiber and nutrients.

Fats and Oils
Healthy fats include polyunsaturated fats such as omega 3 essential fatty acids and omega 6 essential fatty acids. You can only get these fat from your diet and they are important for healthy hair, skin, neurological function and help to reduce inflammation. Monounsaturated fats like olive oil are also very healthy fats that will help keep your cardiovascular system healthy. You want to add healthy fats to your diet by eating lots of fish, nuts, and seeds.
Avoid fried foods. Fried foods such as French fries, donuts and fried fish or chicken are sources of trans fats and not a healthy way to get the calories you need.

Proteins
The protein sources you choose are important too. Your body needs protein for muscle and organ structure and for normal immune system function.
Healthy protein sources include poultry, fish, legumes, nuts and seeds. Red meat is OK once or twice each week, but more red meat contains a lot of saturated fat. A diet high in saturated fat has been linked to cardiovascular disease. Processed meats like hot dogs, sausages, bologna and other lunch meats are high in calories, but also associated with higher risks of cancer.

Dietary Supplements
Using a whole food multivitamin can be beneficial.

Portions Sizes and Meals
You can either add more calories to you diet by eating more meals per day, by adding snacks and by increasing your portion sizes. If a large meal makes you feel stuffed and uncomfortable, eat small portions, but eat more often. You can add healthy snacks through out the day.

Exercise to Gain Weight
Exercise is very important for good health and the right type of exercise can help you gain muscle, which will give you more body mass. Weight lifting exercises that are designed to build muscle should be included with your weight gaining diet and perhaps aerobic exercise should be cut back a bit.

Garlic - A Very Healthy and Safe Herb

It seems that not a day passes without some new benefit of garlic being discovered. The ancient Egyptians actually worshipped the herb and fed it to their slaves to keep them fit and well.

Herbalists have long claimed that garlic was a good germ killer. In India, garlic is used to wash wounds and ulcers. The component that gives garlic its strong odor is the one that destroys or inhabits bacteria, fungi and yeast. Called allicin, its antibacterial action is equal to that of 1% penicillin. Allicin forms when garlic cloves are crushed, resulting in the potent smell and potent antibacterial powers.

Eating garlic helps:

*Garlic's volatile oils keep the lungs clear of infection.
*Act as a nasal decongestant
*Keep away colds

*Protects against heart disease….
*Lower blood cholesterol.

When researcher Dr. Arun Bordia was working in Udaipur, India, he noticed the near absence of heart disease despite the population's habit of dousing their vegetables with butter. He also saw that they ate lots of garlic and wondered if there was a connection. Bordia discovered that when research volunteers dined on butter, their cholesterol levels fell, providing they ate garlic along with it. Take away the garlic, and cholesterol levels jumped.

Garlic goes to work on cholesterol right away, but its overall effect increases slowly and takes two to three months to peak.

*Lower blood pressure.
The Chinese have long used garlic to treat high blood pressure and other cardiac circulation problems.

*Protects against blood clots.
The risk of heart disease due to deposits can be reduced by regular doses of garlic. It has been shown that the bad cholesterol is reduced, while the good cholesterol is increased after garlic is eaten. The stickiness of blood platelets (small fragments that cause a clot of form) is reduced.

It also slows hardening of arteries helps maintain their elasticity.

*Garlic helps with poor circulation, fatigue and headaches.

*Cancer Risks Reduced
A survey of 41,000 participants over age 55 by the Iowa Woman's Health Study determined that garlic reduces the risk of colon cancer, as well. Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York found that garlic's sulfur compounds probably slow prostate cancer by breaking down excess testosterone.

*Eating garlic or onion may even reduce the chances of developing cancer, particularly in the digestive tract. People in the Qixia region of China who don't eat garlic have a 1,000-times-higher rate of stomach cancer than those in the neighboring garlic-eating region of Gangshan.

*Improving immune function
Garlic stimulates the immune system by increasing activity of several types of immune cells. It even protects against genetic changes in DNA.

*Act as an anti-viral and anti-bacterial agent - Antibiotic action
Garlic fights off all sorts of infections, including those of the lung, sinus, bladder, and vagina, as well as colds and flu.

*Garlic improves digestion and reduces intestinal bacterial infection, even dysentery.

Garlic can also help the 500,000 Americans who develop stomach ulcers every year. The bacteria called Helicobacter pylori is responsible for stomach ulcers and inflammation and can lead to stomach cancer. Out of 30 herbs screened by the University of Chicago, garlic was one of the most successful to inhibit 15 different strains of helicobacter. Garlic also helps knock out intestinal worms and other parasites.

*Clear up boils and athletics foot fungi, because of the anti-bacterial properties
Note: When applying topically as a paste, do not tape in place because the oils can cause burns with chronic exposure.

There are many more health benefits from garlic. Medicinally, it has been prescribed since prebiblical times. It is a safe and effective herb, and tastes great!

Whole Food Nation uses garlic, check it out.

Attention Homeschool Parents - Your Rights Are Being Challenged By The Courts...

We are going off topic today. This is very important to our contributor Suzanne and all parents who have chosen to home school their children.

Suzanne homeschools her daughter, Arielle, who is in 4th grade and turns 10 next month. She has taught her at home from birth (as all parents do) and she has been "in school" at home with Suzanne since Kindergarten.

Suzanne writes:

A couple of weeks ago, a California court ruled that parents in CA do not have a constitutional right to homeschool their children. This is even though homeschooling has been legal in California (and every other state with varying levels of control by the government) for many years. The only parents who have the right to teach their children at home, according to this ruling, are those with teaching degrees.

As you can see here http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp by the legend, CA is a low-regulation state, with only parental notification required.

The legal options for homeschooling in CA are listed here: http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp?State=CA

By the way, the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) is an organization that is dedicated to preserving the rights of parents nationwide to direct the education of their children. They also get involved from time to time in assisting families outside of the US who are homeschooling and are persecuted by their governments.

The HSLDA is trying to get the opinion of the court "de-published", i.e. to make it impossible for this ruling to set a precedent for other courts to rule in a similar manner. Even though the California Superintendent of Public Instruction announced this week that he believed that homeschooling is still legal in California, it is still possible that the courts will use the ruling from Feb. 28 as a binding precedent.

What's interesting to me is that in the ruling (I read all 18 pages of it), it states: "the juvenile court has authority to limit a parent’s control over a dependent child, including a parent’s right to make educational decisions for a child, so long as the limitations do not exceed what is necessary to protect the child..."

I find this remarkable that the court is saying THEY have a right to limit a parent's control, but obviously there are no such limits on the courts. Amazing. One would think the courts are the ones who carry the child, feed it, teach it to talk and walk, and take care of the child day to day...

As my friends and parents who are tremendously open-minded, I am asking if you would be kind enough to consider signing the petition that the HSLDA has on its website here: http://hslda.org/ for the de-publishing of the ruling.

If you have any questions at all on anything related to homeschooling or to my reasons for homeschooling, please feel free to ask.
Thanks for reading,
Suzanne

People With Pets Have Better Health

Sharing your life with pets can actually improve your health.

American Veterinary Medical Association shows the United States is a pet-loving nation, having more dogs and cats than any other country. Most pet owners treat their pet like any other member of the family. For the last 5 years of my dog, Tara's life I cooked for her. Much of what I cooked her was more nutritious than what I ate. She couldn't take care of herself so I did it for her. I kept her comfortable, well fed and safe.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), having a pet can decrease your:
Blood pressure
Cholesterol levels
Triglyceride levels
Feelings of loneliness

I've shared my life with dogs for over 45 years.
They have tested my patience, like when Scotty chewed my Oak coffee table, or Bob-Cat leaves hairballs for me to step on. Still I know that my pets give back much more than they receive in the form of companionship and love. My mother had a cat, GinGin that stayed on the bed with her till the very end. This little cat would not leave Mom's side.

After my mom died the dogs helped reduce my stress, loneliness and depression. I've seen the same things happen when Tara and I visited Nursing Homes. I could see how Tara raised resident's self-esteem, lowered anxiety levels and improved attitudes toward others. With these geriatric residents there was better communication with the staff and their family when Tara would visit. If we missed a visit the residents were sad but overjoyed to see us (Tara) on our next visit.

Pets and Your Heart
Not only do pets fill our hearts with love and joy they are also good for the health of our heart. Studies show that people who have had a heart attack survive longer with a pet than without.

Another study, by Karen Allen, PhD, a medical researcher at the University of Buffalo, involved 48 stockbrokers with high blood pressure. Those who shared their home with a cat or dog had lower blood pressure readings in stressful situations than those without.

Recovery After Illness
Other studies have found that people with pets tend to have a speedier, easier recovery after illness or surgery. One UK study of 50-60-year-old women recovering from breast cancer, for instance, found:
87 percent reported that their pets filled "at least one important role in their social support."
43 percent reported that their pets fulfilled more than 10 important support functions, such as being cared for, tactile comfort, and still feeling included socially, when they took their dog for a walk.

Kids and Pets
I have fond memories of my childhood dogs, and as it turns out, pets are just as good for kids as they are for the elderly and adults. One five-year study of 600 children aged 3-18 found that children with pets who are slow learners, or whose parents had divorced, had higher levels of self-esteem and better emotional functioning than those with no pet.

Children with autism and other learning and behavioral disabilities also often show immediate improvement when pets are brought into the classroom for animal-assisted therapy. Further, kids who have a cat or dog in the home during their first years of life are less likely to develop hay fever, asthma and animal-related allergies than those who don't.

Better Overall Health

Research presented at the 10th International Conference on Human Animal Interaction in October 2004 found that pet owners simply experience better health than non pet-owners. The survey of more than 11,000 Australians, Chinese and Germans found that over a five-year period:
Pet owners made 15-20 percent fewer annual visits to the doctor than non pet-owners.

Those who went to the doctor the least were those who continuously owned a pet.
The next healthiest group was people who got a pet during the study.

Though dogs and cats are most popular, any animal can improve your health--especially if you feel an attachment to it.
If you're still not convinced of the benefits of pet ownership, other studies have found these additional health improvements to pet owners:

Reduced depression
Less stress
Improved exercise habits
Better quality of life for those with Alzheimer's or orthopedic disorders

If you are considering sharing your home with a pet for your health, companionship, better exercise habits or because you want to make a difference in a pets life, please adopt from your local animal shelter. These animals do not understand why their life was turned upside down and deserve a good loving home.

Hug your dog or cat now, show them how much you love them.

Today is a very sad day for me. I just picked up my dogs ashes. Tara died 15 days after her 18th birthday. I know this little Sheltie added joy to my life for over 18 years. She will be missed so much and loved forever.

Tara brought so much joy to me, now I have to get over the heartache of not having her with me. See you at the Rainbow Bridge, my sweet Tara. You know we love you. You are a good girl and will always have that special place in my heart.

Poor Sleep Harsher on Women

Just in from Sue, Health Nut Wannabe.

Sue says "I've had a hard time sleeping for several years. It's been getting better since I started eating healthier and exercising. Now I can fall asleep pretty easily, but there are still a few days when I wake up feeling like I didn't sleep at all. It's particularly bad on days when I've eaten too much junk (desserts are my downfall) or slurped too much non-decaf coffee. I also notice it more when my arthritis pain flairs up, which seems to be on days when I forget to take my supplements."

"I ran across this article on WebMD which talks about the effects of losing sleep...

7. Worst Chicken Entrée
Chili's Honey Chipotle Crispers with Chipotle Sauce
2,040 calories 99 g fat 240 g carbs
"Crispers" refers to an extra-thick layer of bread crumbs that soaks up oil and adds unnecessary calories and carbs to these glorified chicken strips. 6. Worst Fish Entree
On the Border Dos XX Fish Tacos with Rice and Beans
2,100 calories 130 g fat 169 g carbs 4,750 mg sodium Perhaps the most misleadingly named dish in America: A dozen crunchy tacos from Taco Bell will saddle you with fewer calories. 5. Worst Pizza
Uno Chicago Grill Chicago Classic Deep Dish Pizza
2,310 calories 162 g fat 123 g carbs 4,470 mg sodium
Downing this "personal" pizza is equivalent to eating 18 slices of Domino's Crunchy Thin Crust cheese pizza. Swap Your Slices: Switch to the Sausage Flatbread Pie and avert deep-dish disaster by nearly 1,500 calories.

4. Worst Pasta
Macaroni Grill Spaghetti and Meatballs with Meat Sauce
2,430 calories 128 g fat 207 g carbs 5,290 mg sodium

3. Worst Nachos
On the Border Stacked Border Nachos
2,740 calories 166 g fat 191 g carbs 5,280 mg sodium
The only way you should ever consider eating these is if you're rolling with a crew of eight. Turn away: You won't find a decent option on the appetizer menu. Instead, turn to the Chicken Tacos on the entee portion of the menu; at 250 calories a pop, they make as good a start to your meal as you can hope for.

2. Worst Starter
Chili's Awesome Blossom
2,710 calories 203 g fat 194 g carbs 6,360 mg sodium
Hard to believe that a single onion can wreak so much nutritional havoc, but batter and fry anything and serve it with a rich dipping sauce and your bound to do some damage. Start properly: At Chili's, take a detour to the "Sides" menu and try the Garlic & Lime Grilled Shrimp. 4 shrimp will only cost you 160 calories.

#1 Worst Food In America
Outback Steakhouse Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing
2,900 calories 182 g fat 240 g carbs

Even if you split this "starter" with three friends, you'll have downed a dinner's worth of calories before your entree arrives. Follow this up with a steak, sides, and a dessert and you could easily break the 3,500 calorie barrier. Front-load: Start your meal with a protein-based dish that's not deep-fried. A high-protein starter helps diminish hunger without putting you into calorie overload. At Outback, that translates to either the Seared Ahi or the Shrimp on the Barbie.

Internet Drugs Falsely Claim to Prevent, Treat STDs

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting consumers about certain drugs they may have purchased over the Internet.

The products are sold as:
Tetrasil
Genisil
Aviralex
OXi-MED
Imulux
Beta-mannan
Micronutrient
Qina
SlicPlus

The products falsely claim to prevent or treat a variety of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including:
herpes
chlamydia
human papillomavirus (HPV)
cervical dysplasia
HIV/AIDS

Some of these products falsely claim to have "FDA Approval" and some claim to be "more effective" than conventional medicine. Examples of claims that these products make include
"Treatment Kills all Herpes Viruses WITHOUT having to use conventional drugs or medications"
"Greatest STD Protection Without Condoms"
"The active ingredient in our product is FDA certified to destroy 99.9992 percent of all pathogenic organisms [i.e.] Chlamydia"

Why Consumers Should be Concerned
"STDs are very serious diseases and these products give consumers a false sense of security that they are protected from STDs," says Janet Woodcock, M.D., Director of FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

What Consumers Should Do
Stop using these products immediately.
Contact your health care professional if you have used any of these products and experienced any bad reactions.

20. Worst Fast Food Chicken Meal.
Chicken Selects Premium Breast Strips from McDonald's (5 pieces) with creamy ranch sauce
830 calories 55g fat (4.5g trans fat) 48g carbs
The only thing "premium" about these strips is the caloric price you pay. Add a large fries and regular soda and this seemingly innocuous chicken meal tops out at 1,710 calories.

19. Worst Drink
Jamba Juice Chocolate Moo'd Power Smoothie(30 fl oz)
900 calories10 g fat 183 g carbs (166 g sugar)
Jamba Juice calls it a smoothie; we call it a milk shake. In fact, this beverage contains more sugar than two pints of Ben and Jerry's Butter Pecan ice cream.

18. Worst Supermarket Meal
Pepperidge Farm Roasted Chicken Pot Pie (whole pie)
1,020 calories 64 g fat 86 g carbs
The label may say this pie serves two, but who ever divided a small pot pie in half? Once you crack the crust, there will be no stopping.

17. Worst "Healthy" Burger
Ruby Tuesday Bella Turkey Burger
1,145 calories 71 g fat 56 g carbs
We chose this burger for more than its calorie payload:
Its name implies that it's healthy.

16. Worst Mexican Entrée
Chipotle Mexican Grilled Chicken Burrito
1,179 calories 7 g fat 125 g carbs 2,656 mg sodium
Despite a reputation for using healthy, fresh ingredients, Chipotle's menu is limited to king-size burritos, overstuffed tacos, and gigantic salads —all of which lead to a humongous waistline.

15. Worst Kids' Meal
Macaroni Grill Double Macaroni 'n' Cheese
1,210 calories 62 g fat 3,450 mg sodium
It's like feeding your kid 1 1/2 boxes of Kraft mac 'n' cheese.
Your Best Option: The 390-calorie Grilled Chicken and Broccoli.

14. Worst Sandwich
Quizno's Classic Italian
1370 calories 86 g fat 4490 mg sodium
A large homemade sandwich would more likely provide about 500 calories. Cut the Calories: Isn't it obvious? Order a small — or save half for later.

13. Worst Salad
On the Border Grande Taco Salad with Taco Beef
1,450 calories 102 g fat 78 g carbs 2,410 mg sodium
This isn't an anomaly: Five different On the Border salads on the menu contain more than 1,100 calories each. The Salad for You: The Sizzling Chicken Fajita Salad supplies an acceptable 760 calories. But remember to choose a non caloric beverage, such as water or unsweetened iced tea.

12. Worst Burger
Carl's Jr. Double Six Dollar Burger
1,520 calories 111 g fat
Carl's brags about this, but also provides convenient nutrition info on its Web site —so ignorance is no excuse for eating it. A Simple Solution: The Low Carb Six Dollar Burger has just 490 calories.

11. Worst Steak
Lonestar 20 oz T-bone
1,540 calories 124 g fat
Add a baked potato and Lonestar's Signature Lettuce Wedge, and this is a 2,700-calorie blowout. Choose with Your Head: The golden rule of steak restaurants is this: Limit yourself to a 9-ouncer or smaller. After all, that's more than half a pound of meat. You won't walk away hungry.

10. Worst Breakfast
Bob Evans Caramel Banana Pecan Cream Stacked and Stuffed Hotcakes
1,540 calories 77 g fat (9 g trans fat) 198 g carbs (109 g sugar)
Five Egg McMuffins yield the same caloric cost as these sugar-stuffed flapjacks. Order This Instead: The Western Omelet has 654 calories and 44 grams of protein.
