This Is How Much Water Your Body Needs...

Have you wondered how much water your body really needs? Water is very good for us and your body needs it to stay alive. But do we really need 8 - 8 oz glasses a day? It depends.

I learned how to figure out how much water my body needs, not a general number for everyone.

Take your weight - divide by 2 and this is the ounces of water your body needs. So if you weigh 170 divide by 2 = 85 ounces of water per day.

As you lose weight the amount of water you need will go down. Start the day with 2 cups of warm or hot water. And remember your body does it's repair work at night so drink 2 cups of water before going to bed.

Water must be filtered. Reverse Osmosis or at least carbon filters until you can get the RO filter. Don't use the small bottles of water because the plastic is wasteful and fills our landfills. If you can't add a filter to your water supply then buy filtered water for drinking and cooking. Get the big bottles, like 3 - 5 gallons.

Herbal - green teas fine. Fruit juices, coffee, soda and other caffeine or sugary drinks do not count as water. I add virgin coconut oil to the morning warm water. Coconut oil is a great fat burning oil.

  1. I've read that the amount of water you need is related to the types of food you eat, i.e. red meat eaters need more, raw vegans need less. I think that makes good common sense but I don't know for sure.

  2. Hi Robin! If possible, can you find out if there is a study that supports that formula? I've been researching this and haven't found anything substantial that supports a formula, so I'd love to see the science behind it. I've seen advice similar to what michelle cited.

I have to say, my view is kind of skewed on this as well because my wife's grandmother, who passed last year at 102, rarely drank water. In fact, she probably had equal parts water to whiskey :) -- Seriously, she drank a shot of whiskey in her coffee every morning all the way until the end, and by the time she was in her mid-nineties after having beaten cancer, he said, "if this lady wants whiskey in her coffee, then by god she can have whiskey in her coffee!" :)

Thanks as always Robin - And nice new look on the site!

  3. Hi Michelle and Metroknow-

I went straight to the source of my article - Dr. Heidi, for more information about how much water we need.

    She says:
"The water formula is based on human body composition being 60-70% water. It is meant as a general guide that varies according to body size rather than recommending a set number of glasses (eg 8) for everyone."

"Your commenter is also right. Yes, we need less water the more fruits and veggies we eat, especially raw fruits and veggies, which contribute organic water - the best kind. Very few people eat enough to make a difference... The water formula I gave as a guideline is meant for omnivores. Vegans probably need less, if they eat lots of raw fruits and veggies." Dr. Heidi

I hope this helps some. And thanks for the comments, I appreciate all feedback, it keeps me learning!

MetroKnow , thanks for the kind comments about my new blog look. I was kind of bored a few days ago so did some makeover work.
