Is The Surgeon General Wrong About Why Americans Are Overweight?

I don't think there's a single American who isn't aware of a health crisis affecting every state, every city, every community, and every school across our great nation.

The crisis is obesity. It’s the fastest-growing cause of disease and death in America. And with the right help it’s completely preventable.

Nearly two out of every three Americans are overweight or obese.

One out of every eight deaths in America is caused by an illness directly related to overweight and obesity.

With so many people fighting the weight loss battle wouldn't it be great to have information that made sense? Much of what we hear is actually conflicting, such as these two statements:
1. "Overweight and obesity result from excess calorie consumption and/or inadequate physical activity"
U.S. Surgeon General, 2001

2. "Those who are overweight eat fewer calories than those of normal weight."
National Academy of Sciences, Diet and Health, 1989

So which is correct? Fewer or more calories contribute to being overweight?

• Many Americans have tried most everything for weight loss and nothing works for long.
• Are over 40 and frustrated with their now expanding waistline.
• Are also suffering from bad cholesterol, high blood pressure, hot flashes, digestive problems, constipation, diabetes, arthritis, fatigue or depression.

How much do we really know about weight management? How do you know the best way for you to lose weight and stay healthy - or even get healthier? Does exercise really make a big difference with weight loss? Is it the food we eat or the amount? Do we have to cut back on calories? Is it safe to cut back calories? Does low fat - high fiber help?

Which of these statements do you believe are true?

1. "Overweight and obesity result from excess calorie consumption and/or inadequate physical activity"
U.S. Surgeon General, 2001

OR

2. "Those who are overweight eat fewer calories than those of normal weight."
National Academy of Sciences, Diet and Health, 1989

Some of you may not know that Dr. Heidi Dulay designer of this product, has been a weight specialist (and now a nutrition professor) for the last 15 years. The weight research report was prepared by Dr. Heidi. The stunning research is unrelated to the product she designed. These findings and beliefs on weight are based on her life's work in health and nutrition.

Did the Surgeon General Get It Wrong About Weight?

Beyond Organic Healthy Food

8 Reader comments - thoughts - that's you!:

  1. If caloric intake or even fat intake is the answer to obesity how come a high fat, high calorie diet like Atkins is so effective in weight removal? People are all different in how they process different foods. Metabolism and the immune system respond to weight loss as if it there is a problem and attempt to counter the weight that has been lost with weight gain. What if obesity is a symptom of diabetes instead of the cause of diabetes? Why would I, a 40+ male who is active at work and at play gain weight on a 1200 calorie low fat diet yet lose 50 pounds in 5 months on a calorie and fat rich low carb diet? The body changes to fight weight loss. Finding out why and being able to modify that response is the solution to keeping weight loss permanant or preventing it altogether.

  2. Swampy - Thank you for the thoughtful comments based on your experience and your own reseach about weight loss. Not too many people understand how and why we gain or lose weight based on our own body. That's why a one size fits all weight loss program does not work.
You wrote "The body changes to fight weight loss. Finding out why and being able to modify that response is the solution to keeping weight loss permanant or preventing it altogether." I say AMEN, that is exactly right.
Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us.

  3. Wow I am so confused now. At first I agreed it was too many calories and not enough exercise that made people overweight. Now I'm wondering if that has much todo with it. I admit it was the comment from swampy that made me forget what I've always believed and realize many there's much more to it. Thank for this article, it made me think and maybe this time I can make some healthy life choices. I also found the report very helpful, thanks.

  4. Heather think of it this way, my best friend of nearly 30 years is more active than anyone I know, she loves swimming - dance and walks a lot. She doesn't eat more than she burns off but has always been overweight. It is not as simple as cutting back calories and exercise. There are many things people with weight problems need help understanding - it's all individual because every body is different with different needs. THis is why a one size fits all system or pill will not work.

All I'm getting at is that my best friend is very active, has been her whole life and still battles the weight problems. BTW - yes she is going to work with Dr. Heidi or do the ER weight loss auditor program.
Heather thank you very much for your comments and visiting.

  5. I think your basic argument is misconstrued as #1 refers to a cause and effect relation on the emergence of obesity, #2 merely points to an association that people who _already_ are obese tend to consume less calories.
I think the lady researcher is right in advocating real food as opposed to microwave dinners. That said, the articles have no opposing claims, though it may appear to be so at the first glance.

  6. Daniel the statements I noted are opposite and may or may not be taken the way you read them. The point is that information we get is not always the most helpful in dealing with weight issues. You are kind in saying Dr. Heidi is right with her movement to get people to eat real food. She works with confused people in her clinic daily so she is teaching good food verses bad food, real food verses fake food and helping us sort out teh things we read and hear everyday about what causes weight gain and what works to get if off - without pills.
Daniel thank you very much for your thoughtful comments.

  7. We're constantly bombarded with bad information about nutrition and weight loss. There is no quick fix - it's eating smaller portions, along with good whole food, eliminating processed foods, and moderate exercise that will help you lose weight long term. You provide very helpful information here Robin and Dr Heidi's program sounds very good. Thanks for posting about it.
