Depression And Food - The Link

What we eat is a factor that greatly affects how we feel. Most people don’t really notice that what we put into our bodies affects our moods. Sure we know that if we eat too much sugar we get a rush, just to crash emotionally, or when we have too many Adult Alcohol Beverages we will feel hung over, but we are often unaware of how other foods may make us feel anxiety and depression.

In our current fast food, over-processed food nation it's harder to eat the feel good foods. Over-processed foods do not supply our brains with the right nutrients for healthy mental health. Here are some thoughts about our processed foods:

A hundred years ago food was grown without pesticides in naturally vital soil. People didn't know about organic yet because they ate naturally grown food, they were getting all the nutrients they needed.

Now, most fruits, vegetables and grains are being grown in nutrient stripped soil and then over-processed destroying vitamins and minerals - just to add them back in synthetic form. Not a healthy mix for good brain food.

Cows and sheep were once grass fed - we had happy chickens, the ones on a farm allowed to move outside. Now cows are being fed genetically modified, pesticide-sprayed grains and given hormones to sped growth. We have to pay a premium price grass-fed beef and happy chickens.

Today much of our food not only contains little nutrients, but has many toxins added. Without the vitamins, minerals, and many other factors that natural, organic and grass-fed food contains, many people suffer deficiencies that can cause anxiety and depression, as well a many other illnesses.

What can we eat to be emotional healthy?
I'll pass it over to my friend Sue. She is almost finished with her BA in psychology at Bethany University (one more class to go), and she has been struggling with depression for years, so she is very intimate with this topic.
Read Sue's excellent article titled Fight Funky Feelings With Food. No she won't just say "eat healthy and feel great" she gives tips on best and worst foods for those funky moods.

Sue ~ Health Nut Wannbe has much more help about foods that help us feel great or put us deeper in a funky mood.
